It all starts at the top with the HC, Shanahan, and his propensity to "try to get by" with average-to-below average talent at key positions on the OL (in this case, C & RT for the Niners). You can't go into this season rolling out very limited talents like Brendel at C and McKivitz at RT with the high aspirations this team has. It's going to catch up with you at key moments in games and in the playoffs like we've seen. You look at last year's playoffs and all three teams the Niners faced, the Chiefs, Lions and Packers, all had far better OLs as they've done what it takes to assemble good OL talent, protect their franchise QBs, and run their offenses like they want to.
You've got to put better talent out there to protect Purdy and give this offense a chance to produce like it can with the talent it has...you have to find that talent either in the draft, FA or trades. This past draft was full of young promising OL talent as you mention here. Glad at least the Niners got Puni. However, this is Year 8 in the Shanahan era and we should expect better than guys like Brendel & McKivitz at key positions on the OL - that's not gonna cut it in winning in the trenches against good teams.
