Makes sense to me but I don't think Mathis would want a 1 year deal.

No way he's getting a 1 year deal...I just don't see it happening Baalke doesn't like to pay top cash for a guard.

I'd rather pay Boone to be honest...that said I'd be happy to see a real good vet come over to the Bay area.

It's a tricky one...you sign him to a 3-year deal, you secure the top rated ZBS guard and at the same time, get stronger by moving Boone out to T where he is happiest and then have to pay him at T $ next year. You could conceivably get much much stronger talent wise esp. b/c it pushes players like Pears and Martin to depth/backup roles but is the cost worth it...we have the money, no doubt. But do you want to develop young players too at significantly cheaper deals with more risk? And you could lose Boone next year for big T money.

Great questions/comments! I would love to see him signed if he would be reasonable but that is doubtful. If Martin and Thomas both seem to be starter quality this year I doubt the 9ers would sign him--sans injury. If the cap is going to take a huge jump in the near future the signing might be affordable.

Would still like to see a line of: Staley/Thomas/Kilgore/Martin/Boone...with Looney, Pears, Farrell and Brown (or Silberman) as backups.

No thanks on Mathis. We never pay big money for gaurds, so why start now; especially when you consider he is 33 and not likely in the long term plans? Build on what we have and dont give in, otherwise, what is the message we are sending? I dont want to spend just because we have it, at least not at the guard position.

This could very well be the mentality for the FO as well. I'm sure they are exploring every option here but in the end, they could end up doing exactly what you noted here (and I think it's more likely).

Pro Bowl guards aren't usually just hanging out, waiting for an offer to play.

Yet that's the case right now with Evan Mathis, a two-time Pro Bowler who was released this offseason by the Philadelphia Eagles in a cost-cutting move. Mathis,a 10-year veteran who's 33 years old, is a 6-foot-5, 304-pounder out of Alabama who's been an NFL starter since he was drafted in the third round by Carolina in 2005.

Now, Mathis – who's just been selected to consecutive Pro Bowls – is just waiting for a call.

The 49ers, apparently, are one of the teams with his phone number and an interest.

According to John Clayton of ESPN.com, the Niners, Dolphins, Chiefs and Colts have discussed making an offer to Mathis. San Francisco is under its salary cap number for 2015, so could be in position to make a move if it decides it's necessary.

Certainly, the 49ers' offensive line is a bit in doubt after the departures of starting guard Mike Iupati and starting right tackle Anthony Davis in recent months. One scenario could include sliding right guard Alex Boone to right tackle and bringing in Mathis to play guard.

This week, Mathis told CBS Sports Radio that he expects negotiations with teams to "ramp up" soon.

"Exactly what my options are aren't as clear as they will be in a week or two," he said. But, he added tht he's being patient. Training camps haven't yet opened, so he isn't worried.

"I haven't missed anything," he said. "There's no rush at all."

As David Fucillo of SB Nation noted this week, Mathis could be a good fit for a short-term deal to solidify the lineup and also bring a skillset that fits San Francisco. Mathis has been good in Philadelphia's zone-blocking scheme, and the 49ers this season are expected to incorporate more zone blocking into their playbook.

How good is Mathis? The analytic website Pro Football Focus graded Mathis as the No. 1 guard in the NFL over the past two seasons.

Pro Football Focus' Sam Monson told Sports Illustrated's Doug Farrar in June that Mathis "Is consistently one of the best performers in the game in the trenches and, despite his age, is showing no signs of slowing down."

The 49ers, however, could decide to stand pat with the talent they have, especially if Mathis' price tag proves too high. Young players such as Brandon Thomas and Marcus Martin (if he loses the battle at center) could be plugged in at the guard spots with Boone moving out to tackle. Or Boone could remain at right guard with veteran Erik Pears or rookie Trent Brown – who looked promising this offseason – moving in to the spot at right tackle.

I read the article and I think it's a lot of projections and speculation about whether were even considering offering Mathis a deal. What I do think is the reason why no team has signed him as of yet is because he's asking for too much. Even he states it himself that the market should start to ramp up very soon., Which sounds like agent speak to me. I think as you stated sign him to a three-year deal with incentives, but that would absolutely mean a pay cut from what he was considering with the Eagles and reportedly the Eagles were not going to pay him what he wanted. I simply can't see the Niners paying an aging guard top dollar.

Its most definitely a tough situation, I want mathis. But 3 years to a 34 year old guard with injury issues... He would make us a lot better, but boone becomes far too expensive at that point. I have a feeling niners are going oline in the first round next year the way it looks.

Why wouldn't the seahawks be in play for him?
I thought the seahawks need O-line help bad?

Because they still have to sign their QB. They won't have a lot of money left to pay for him.

I could definitely see Baalke saying to Tomsula and company, "Teach your children well...let the FAs go to..."

They have ALOT of players to sign before they can even think about bringing in Mathis's contract.

Yeah..... signing a OG is the LAST thing on Seattle's mind. They need Bennett very badly and he's already said he's going to hold out THIS season.

plus they need to sign sleazy and okung so thats where the oline money will go

Yup, they should probably focus on taking care of their own first. Wilson, Wagner, Bennett need to have their contract situations sorted out.

Do you hear that squeezing, sucking sound??

That's their cap starting to get tighter and tighter.
What's sad about bad o line play is you really can't gauge how a RB, WR or QB are progressing. The entire offense gets put on hold when you have a bad o line. Tackle will be a problem the whole year regardless if we sign mathis or not. The rest of the line will start to play better as the season goes on. Having a glaring hole on the line is like having a whole in a cup. Useless for the most part.

On a different note, I am enjoying watching Seattle get knee capped by the salary cap.
Patra projects Hyde for about 900 yards rushing on 200 carries in 2015.

Niners GM Trent Baalke, who drafted Hyde out of Ohio State, also is optimistic about Hyde's chances of making a big impact this season. Baalke recently told Matt Barrows of the Sacramento Bee that Hyde has dropped 15 pounds and is looking "extremely good" with the additional quickness.

15 pounds is a sure-fire sign we're moving away from the power run game towards the ZBS IMHO.

15 lbs is a lot of weight to lose. I don't see how this is a great thing.
Sure, a little quicker but really, 15lbs?

Still...6'0"" 220 isn't light for a RB. To put it into perspective, Bush is 6'0" 205.
