I hope Martin and Thomas come in and kick ass. I think this is why we won't sign Mathis for big money bc we have faith and want these two guys to be starters eventually.

I just can't believe how Martin was so pushed around and sometimes looked around seriously lost as kap was getting hit. Not much to due with injuries there. The goal line qb sneak against the rams came to mind....Kilgore was a much better center and hope Martin takes over the rg spot but only when he proves he can be a quality starter. USC has some overdrafted people that don't pan out at all. If that's the case at least we still have thomas

Totally agree there. Saving that money for where it can be better used would always help.

IMO, There are many NFL 2nd players who were awesome in college like Martian & Thomas and then were less than spectacular in their first season.

Some of these guys got a Hard, Cold Slap in the face w/ a "Thanks I Needed That!"

They realize that this is their 2nd year and now know they have to work extra hard and pay extra attention to be a high-caliber NFL player.

I'm thinking that's what happened to Martin and the attitude he's showing.
Startling line I expect:

Staley-Boone-Kilgore-Martin-Pears

Starting line I want:

Staley-Thomas-Kilgore-Martin-Boone

That second one is more of a roll of the dice but would be oh so exciting to see. So much athleticism on the line.

Yup. I think that's the ideal fit if we're going to use ZBS, but it's contingent on Thomas earning that LG spot. Don't want to just give it to him because of his draft status. I would love nothing more than to see him and Martin claim the starting guard spots, and move Boone out to RT. If Kilgore is healthy, he should be the center.

Same here. We would definitely have ups and downs with that line. Possibly a lot of mental errors. Lets see if forester earns his paycheck here.

Yup, that's why I expect the more veteran o-line with Boone at LG and Pears at RT to open the season. It's more important to play with proper technique and not miss any assignments.
Instead of basically starting two rookie guards in Thomas and Martin, I think our coaches will only start one and then have pears at rt and Boone at lg.

Next year if we choose to resign Boone then we can move him to tackle and pears can be the swing like he should of been this year. Then both Martin and Thomas can start.

Got to get the OL situated, season is going to be here before you know it.
I wonder how much new offense we'll show in pre-season??

This sounds right! As much as I would love to see Thomas and Martin start at the G spots...it isn't as likely as your scenario!

Even though m Martin wasn't completely healthy, dont all of you remember seeing him getting abused and lost all season long? No push, bad pass pro, reminds me of another stud guard from USC in chilo rachal. Now I know Martin may be better but dam. I'd give Thomas a chance at guard before Martin. At least Thomas held clooney in check and is established as a good pass protector and run blocker.

Yes I remember,

I'm inline with what MM said in that what we see right out of the gate to start TC maybe a very good indication of the coaches initial thoughts on how they perceive the OL to be. It will give us a lot of insight.

I agree with most in that we'll probably see the 3 vets to start but my ideal lineup in this:

Boone - Looney/Thomas - Kilgore - Martin - Staley

Why? With age your LT's tend to move out to RT. Looney is an excellent pulling guard and could help in [our power run plays and he finished the year at C and knows all the linecalls. Thomas has a license to beat him out though. Kilgore is going to be an excellent ZBS C but needs strength help inside on power runs hence Looney/Thomas and Martin (worked on his strength and conditioning). Staley is crucial here b/c we tend to run right a lot and Staley is ideal at cut blocks to seal the edge on stretch runs from our ZBS.

I think Boone has his work cut out for him if he's going to beat Pears - as it should be. Boone wants tackle money, he's going to need to earn it.

Looks like boone is starting at LG.

This is also a strong possibility. Chryst has said it's easier for a OG to slide over to tackle if Staley (knocking on all the wood in 50 feet) ever is unavailable.
That may be what he said, but what if the RT gets injured? Keeping Boone at either guard smacks as a cost-savings idea not a football idea.

I've given up hoping for Staley to move to RT but agree with you NC...as we have been saying for...years! Trouble is...he's by far the best OLman at LT and giving up that strength may only diminish the overall effectivenss of the line. I'm also very hesitant to rely on Boone. Something about the guy just doen't ring true for me.
