I'm actually not that worried about Pears. I know that sounds crazy. He's always been a reliable pass protector, and he has been responsible for far less pressures and sacks than Davis. He has NOT been a very good drive blocker, so i am a bit concerned about the professed desire to pull Boone from the left to run power to the right. He has been a productive blocker on zone runs. Buffalo fans were pretty upset when he went down for the year in 2012. He REALLY struggled in Marrone's man/gap offense the last two years (inexplicable that Marrone went that way, since he was all ZBS under Payton several years back), and that's become the book on him, since it's hard for anyone watching the NFL to maintain a 2+ year memory.

Agree on Pears. I understand he was terrible the last 2 seasons in Buffalo, but as you mentioned, that had a lot to do with him being a bad fit for Marrone's blocking scheme. He performed well in a ZBS when he played under Chan Gailey, and also in Denver under Mike Shanahan. He's dependable in pass pro and should be more effective in the running game now that he's back in a scheme that fits his skill set. He's experienced too, which is something we badly need on this o-line.
Many times since first posting, if we don't have the OL for a passrush, i suggested that we play playcall around it. Specifically , virtually all passes are gone in under 2.0 seconds(according to Eil, it is exaclty 1.9 seconds), NO passes that require more than 1-2 step drop, add in release passes to RB/FB, utilize underneath pass to RB/FB just 2 yds up the gut as another bailout, and don't give D a free down by throwing long with a 5-7 step drop when QB has only 2 seconds or less to release ball.

Consequences: kap doesn't come near 52 sacks this yr....if he gets the hang of bailouts, he could cut sacks to 1 per game max, greatly decr the amt of yds needed on 3rd down, and keep the chains moving. Kap stays healthier with less hits, we quit giving up downs on med and long range passes if OL can't hold for more than 2 seconds. Time and again last yr, , every time I posted kap needed 1-3 steppers or 1- 2 stepper, harbaw responded with 7 steppers ....where kap was hit the moment he turned around. If OL can't block for those passes, then simply DON'T throw them. Man is that simple...yet obviously, harbaw never saw it. IT was pathetic.
Baalke is starting to become delusional. Saying he feels good about the guys we have on the O-line, hence we probably wont be signing any FA Guards or Tackles.

He said the same thing about the CB corps last year. People were freaking out, thinking Cox and Culliver were going to be burnt toast. Turned out to be pretty damn good.

Baalke has a good eye for talent. Yes, there's going to be misses on individual guys, but he's generally done a good job stocking each positional unit with talent. Someone always emerges.
am I the only one who doesnt get obsession with Mathis ?

hes good, but hes old and will command a lot of money for a short term stay.
he won't help us long term, and let's face it- the team is in a big rebuild mode. I don't see a use for Mathis beyond this year, next year at most.

we aren't in win-now mode, and it's obvious. right now the most important thing is to groom new young, cheap players, not sign expensive vets for short-term. by doing the latter we are just postponing when we will need to play/evaluate young olinemen. we'll still need to do it, so why not try it now when we arent actually in win-now mode. brandon thomas and marcus martin developments are really important right now. pears is a stopgap most likely until they figure out anthony davis status.

I hear what you're saying. Mathis would upgrade the line this year. No doubt about that. The question is how much is he worth, and is he worth burying some of our younger talent on the bench. Still a great player, but he's going to be 34 this year. I think Thomas is the future at LG, Martin at RG, Kilgore at C. Will probably draft a young RT next year to adequately replace AD.

I watched a few games from BUF to check out Pears and I saw them as a zone blocking team.

Edit: found this
The power run game will be a change for the men on Buffalo's offense. The Bills have been largely an inside zone run team for the better part of the last five seasons.

Problem is we play in arguably the hardest division. Buffalo didn't play Sea, Arz, and St Louis twice a year. That's a whole different level of DL play and skill.

Okay, I'll play this game. Where did Mathis play.

I think Sheldon Richardson and Muhammed Wilkerson on the same line is scarier than whatever the the NFCE can put on the field.

JPP, Osi, Tuck, Kiwanuka > Richardson and Wilkerson

Maybe 5 years ago...

edit: Both the NYJ guys were demons against the run and pass. Can the NYG say that about anyone, except Tuck? Can they even say that about Tuck recently?

Tuck is so long gone, lol....

Osi long gone before that...

JPP has only been dominant in the run since 2012...

Kiwi has been so so....

Cool, thanks for that info. Maybe some people mistook the inside zone as a man/power scheme. When people think of zone, they think of the stretch plays. Looks like Buffalo did more inside zone, a la the Eagles.

jpp had double digit sacks last year. Think he wont get double digit sacks this year, but I cant put my finger on it.

Interesting. I knew they were a zone team under Gailey, but all I ever read indicated that Marrone ran power. I don't do the all 22 footage (cheap), so I looked up Fred Jackson highlights and saw some drive blocking and power in there. I just figured the zone stuff was from Gailey's term and the power was from Marrone. After reading your post, I watched some Spiller highlights, and it's almost all zone and draws. My mistake

I wonder why so many characterized Marrone's offense as power? Maybe because Gailey was all zone/zone read and Marrone incorperated some power?

you think we are ? we changed coaching, a ton of our cornerstones left/retired, the oline and corners are very different, and we play in a super tough division

if staff thought we were in win now mode, they wouldve kept Gore. they would make a huge attempt to keep Justin for one more year. and so on.

thats not to say 49ers wont compete, but signing old expensive vets for a 'rental' is what teams who think theyre one-two players away do, not rebuilding teams. signing randy moss made sense for our 2011 team (even though he was free). it wouldnt make sense now.

Dockett is the only real exception to this, but I think they wanted vet pass rush insurance
