I agree about Gore.
I agree about Justin as well.
I consider all those good moves, this is what YOU are not 'getting'.
It's just that as a result of those moves, a large portion of the 'old' team is gone and even if new team is amazing and a future dynasty, it still needs time to gel. sure, there are some exceptions to that, but in general it holds true
you don't think we are rebuilding even though a lot of coaching and starting players are - um, ok. we are not rebuilding because the team isnt good, we are rebuilding for various reasons. any time large part of offensive and defensive personnel leave, its a rebuild.
you seem to imply 'rebuilding' has a negative connotation. it does not.
we do not need a 34 year old evan mathis, who by the way will be more expensive than bush or dockett, for only or two years. because we have young cheap linemen now and its better to go through growing pains now when coaching and players has been changed, and a lot of things start from scratch, than sometime in the future when the team might be set and we have no time to experiment.
torrey smith is a bad example as he is 26 years old. torrey smith will be here no matter what happens. evan mathis is the proverbial 'expendable' who would be signed by some team who is an olineman away (or so they think) from a superbowl for a year or two, MAX. he is a rental for a team that is pressure badly to win it all now. we are not.

Hoping they pick up somebody for depth. But I'm still worried that the oLine needs serious help before becoming our weakest link.

Glad the reports on the OL were positive yesterday. That's actually earlier than I expected. If they can string a few wins together against our beastly front, they might be ready for week 1. I'm still expecting a mess in the first 1-2 PS games, just working out the kinks (I wouldn't expect Kap to play a whole ton until the protection is dependable).

I'd agree with you in principle, but defense is much more complicated than that. Defensive fronts can scheme pretty heavily, and proper technique and timing is a must. THe defensive backfield can be much more complicated than the front. But, yeah, the offense has more complications and details to digest and put to work.

I think it depends on how much they change the DL schemes. Dockett is new, AA is a rookie but the rest are up to speed. Staley has played for Foerster before but everyone else will be learning a new system this year. So I would expect the OL to struggle more. Sometimes it's better to have some new players during transitions because they will be less judgemental or resistant...so losing Iupati and Davis may not be that tragic.

WRATH, what do you think of Joe Looney? I was not too impressed with him, but he's only 24 so I'm not closing the book on him. Was wondering if you've watched him closely.

He was inconsistent in the first game. Lots of correctable issues: false steps, high pad level, passive hands. He fixed alot of that in the next two starts. I like his nasty streak, and he has good feet for his size. If his improvement continued after Boone took back over, he should be able to do the job. He got a bad rap by writers and zoners from their first impressions in PS and week 1, but the guy is much better than the casual consensus on him, and he should be in contention for a starting spot. If Martin can't pull it together and Thomas knee is still on the way back, I wouldn't be worried if Looney starts. I'm equally confident with him holding down Center if Kilgore is out, provided that he can make the right calls. I have no insight into that.
edit: to add, he was a consistent pulling G on power, who rarely missed his guy, but never blew him up (complete opposite of Iupati). he was a little slow/hesitant on his drive blocks and occasionally got beaten accross his face on his down block when he was on the front side of power. Occasionally struggled with stunts in pass pro, but was pretty good when he was manned up.
