Just a year ago they were right up against the cap. Its never unlimited and adds up fast. That $15 mil could go to extensions for guys on the roster or an impact player like an Alshon Jeffery.

If they do wind up having to pay Kaepernick for another year, Baalke should have his stuff waiting for him outside of the building.

If CK does make this team as a backup, what are the odds the FO asks him to restructure down as such?

Way to go Phoenix.

My point exactly.

Point is you don't spend $30 mil on a below average player, actually no team does.

no need to worry

his personal time interests didn't effect him yesterday when this past week's distraction was at its worst locally and nation wide

and if he does get injured, there is enough Cap space to eat his cost

i get we can eat that cap but its what 16M at min

you could buy an elite player at any position for that

Just two concerns regarding Kaep remaining a 49er.

One, is that I wonder if his off-field interests/endeavors will keep him from being ready/prepared/useful, if he needs to step in at QB1.

Two, is I worry that another injury will handcuff the 49ers into having to keep him for the next season yet again.

Another long term injury would be an absolute disaster. I'd be calling for Baalke to GTFO at that point because it would be incredibly stupid to put yourself in a position to spend almost $30 mil on a backup QB over 2 seasons.

Not sure injuries aren't a way of life in the NFL so trying to cut him may just bring up a battle over a new or existing injury. It's a very interesting case because I believe the best route might have been an injury settlement last year, but would CK agree? After all, he's benched and all of a sudden he needs three surgeries.

Edit: my point is...maybe he's smarter than given credit and has the team over a barrel. I haven't read his contract so perhaps the "team-friendly" nature of it wasn't all that one sided.

Not optimistic that anything has changed. Still appears to lock onto his primary read. Works against 2nd/3rd stringers in the 4th Pre Season game. Sort of.

Hope something changes and he pulls his head out and concentrates/learns to go through progressions.

I just don't see him as a long term answer for this (or any) Team.
Is he the future franchise qb of this team? If this team feels he isn't cut him trade him for a bag of chips wharever it may be. Don't understand the apprehention to make a move. If they feel he is the future then get behind him through him out there and lets go. The question is were is his heart at? does he have the desire to be great? Or is he collecting a check. If its the later then he needs to go and enjoy what ever life offers him. Personally I would like to see them move on wether that is cut him or trade just do it. This doesn't have anything to do with the media hype I just don't think he is a complete qb and would rather the team move on and search for the future qb. They are in rebuild mode so freakin rebuid.

So I know this next year is already fully guaranteed for Kaepernick but I heard on 95.7 this morning that by us keeping him this year, we actually run the risk of keeping him again the following year because if he gets hurt in practice or some type of season ending injury, we will be on the hook again for the 2017 season...

If he's not healthy by the April deadline, then his salary would again be guaranteed. Just like this year. Everyone pointed out how he basically signed a year by year deal when the details came out, but this clause is actually working out for him pretty good so far.

Correct

You don't blow $30 million on a subpar QB. That is the kind of stuff GM's lose their jobs over and never get a second crack at the job as a result of it.

Consider what you would say if it was the Raiders dropping $30 mil on Christian Ponder, because that is about the level we are at with Kaepernick. He's not a good quarterback, nobody across the NFL wanted to pay him as anything more than a backup quarterback in the offseason and with good reason, backup quarterbacks don't get paid $15 mil a year.

So he can basically have minor surgeries to repair things if need be and continue to get paid?
