you could buy an elite player at any position for that

Exactly. That cap money that you save doesn't get wasted, it can rollover into another year so it makes no sense to pay a guy just because. Why not just a special teamer off the street for $20 mil a year since apparently the team has a lot of cap space to burn.

You don't blow $30 million on a subpar QB. That is the kind of stuff GM's lose their jobs over and never get a second crack at the job as a result of it.

Consider what you would say if it was the Raiders dropping $30 mil on Christian Ponder, because that is about the level we are at with Kaepernick. He's not a good quarterback, nobody across the NFL wanted to pay him as anything more than a backup quarterback in the offseason and with good reason, backup quarterbacks don't get paid $15 mil a year.

I'm not disagreeing with you, but it's worth pointing out he was coming off of 3 different surgeries as well. That has something to do with the confidence of teams to sign him.

So I know this next year is already fully guaranteed for Kaepernick but I heard on 95.7 this morning that by us keeping him this year, we actually run the risk of keeping him again the following year because if he gets hurt in practice or some type of season ending injury, we will be on the hook again for the 2017 season...

If he's not healthy by the April deadline, then his salary would again be guaranteed. Just like this year. Everyone pointed out how he basically signed a year by year deal, but this clause is actually working out for him pretty good so far.

So he can basically have minor surgeries to repair things if need be and continue to get paid?

Im sure he would have to go down with something serious during the season in order to qualify.

My goodness has it really come down to "Oh, 49ers have $40 million in cap space so they can eat his contract". Instead of "No doubt he's worth every penny and the 49ers can definitely take on his contract". The sooner the 49ers can move on from Kaepernick and possibly soon to be Gabbert the brighter the future will get for this organization.

I don't know what the exact stipulation states but the injury has to be something that won't allow him to pass a standard NFL medical exam and I'm guessing it has to be something sustained during the season. Right now the 49ers are in the clear with the exception of something major such as an ACL tear but as the season draws to an end, even minor injuries with the ensuing recovery time could exceed the April 1st deadline.

None of the injuries were major in nature, non-throwing shoulder....etc. Its all stuff that nobody had questioned that he could recover from. I think the big issue is that once you get into November and December, even a non-major injury with recovery time could push past April 1st and just like that the 49ers are on the hook for $15 mil for a 30 year old backup quarterback.

Word. So I assume it's safe to say that we do run the risk of being on the hook for 2 years simply by keeping him for 1 year. Interesting stuff

Much like the RG3 situation last year with Washington. If they actually let Kaepernick play and he does get hurt, resulting in a Groundhog Day scenario of this past offseason, Baalke should be fired just as soon as the season is over.
Gauging on his latest performance, Chip has done a lot of repair to Kaep. Don't be surprised that our starter in couple of games would be Kaep. I think he is still a bit rusty but is heading the right direction.

Chip's the man.
Wonder if he will restructure to stay on team or be traded, or nfl.com just spewing talking points for hits.

I can't see a single good reason for him to restructure right now. He's due to collect a buttload of money, even more if he happens to get hurt, if they choose not to pay him, they can cut him, and then he'd likely still get offered about the same as they would offer in a restructure.

Even if he restructures his deal, after this year he's gonna have to restructure every year if he can't come close to 2012 form.

Thanks for posting that btw.

Becuase if he doesn't he may never play or earn again.

Is that enough money to live the rest of your life?

If he does (and plays well) he could earn another large contract.
