Exactly...
Walsh > Belichick
Montana > Brady

no. he invented a "new" way of playing football on offense, and has had dozens of coaches who achieved a lot success after they left the 49ers. Walsh is the GOAT of coaches, but Brady is the GOAT of QBs.

Different eras has a lot of truth in determining who's the greatest. But I think being perfect in championships has great weight when breaking down the best.. Which is why Michael Jordan 6 - 0 in championships is considered better than LeBron James 3 - 5. There is something to be said in being perfect in 4 or more championships. The 49ers path to getting to super bowls was much harder. They had to get by all -time great teams, year after year. The Patriots opponents? Just one, 2000 Ravens! I'm not sure if you put Manning's Colts in the all-time great teams, they got there only 1 time. So this new era has only 1 all time Great Team. The Patriots. What happened to the other great teams?

These arguments about who is the greatest ever in any sport or at any position drive me crazy. The way games are played changes every 15-20 years based on rule changes and current trends. Let's just take this Montana-Brady argument. Montana had a much better team around him and I have no doubt any of his teams would beat New England. When there was no salary cap teams could load up and had far more depth than todays teams. But that went for all teams, not just the Niners. Brady has been playing in one of the weakest divisions in football for most of his career. The other 3 teams have gone thru 42 starting QB's and several coaches during Brady's run. Getting to the Super Bowl has been far easier for New England. He has not had to face teams like Dallas, the New York Giants, the Packers, the Redskins and the Bears. And that was just to get to the Super Bowl. He has not gone up against coaches like Tom Landry, Jimmy Johnson, Bill Parcels, Mike Holmgren, and Joe Gibbs. Todays rules don't allow the defense to put as much pressure on the QB for fear of being penalized. DB's can't bang the receivers like they used to. No question Brady has better stats and more Super Bowls but with all the changes in the game who's to say how many yards and wins Montana would have had under today's rules and style. Jerry Rice said he would have loved to play with todays rules. The passing game is much more dominant now. Look at last weeks game. New England barely ran the ball in their comeback. Compare that with the Niners in the 1981 championship game against Dallas. Sure Montana threw the winning touchdown but it was the running of Ricky Patton and others that moved the Niners down the field and ate up the clock to set up the winning TD. The point of all this is that the way games are played is constantly changing. I think it is ridiculous to try and compare eras. Let's just say Brady is the greatest of his era, Montana the greatest of his and Unitas the greatest of his. Just like you can't compare Babe Ruth to Mays you can't compare QB's that played under different rules and in different eras.

THIS

you can be a niner fan and still be logical and not a complete homer.
Anybody that loses twice to Eli Manning in the Superbowl is a disgrace to humanity

Compromise, Joe is the goat at super bowl winning percentage but when it comes to every other qb measurable he's #2 including total Superbowl wins.

Probably, but if Brady played in the 80's taking hits like Joe did his head would have flown off his body, rolled through the tunnel, past the locker room and right into the parking lot where someone tailgating would've added it to the grill.

The irony is that Brady first played in the league under many of the same rules that Montana did. Linemen on avg today are also about 30lbs heavier, faster and stronger than their counterparts in the 80s even LT the guy who broke Joe's back is only listed at 237lbs. Cheap shots also still happen even in today's NFL and gruesome injuries still take place in a regular basis. Joe was also a risk taking scrambler who was prone to taking more punishment than Brady who is more Marino like in the pocket protecting himself.

Joe Montana never lost a Super Bowl or threw a interception in a Super Bowl, perfection.
