I'd like to take the time to apologize to theDuke85 for calling him a 'Brady nut-hugger' yesterday. I thought he had called me a homer for arguing in favor of Montana over Brady, but it was another poster.

Again, I'd like to say that I really like Brady and have been a fan of his for his entire career. I know everyone says this these days, but back in real time, I really wanted them to draft the local kid and I thought they were going to until they took fricking Geo Caramazzi and I slapped my head so hard I gave myself a headache.

When the Patriots got the ball back towards the end of the last Super Bowl, I said to my wife, 'If he moves the ball down the field here and takes the lead, he absolutely deserves to be in the conversation for the best ever.' He did and he does. That's how I feel about Tom Brady. He's in the conversation as the best ever. But, the bottom line is that I've never seen someone play the position quite as well as Joe Montana.
Some good arguments made in here

And the "They" in that statement was fricking Bill Walsh. What was he thinking?

If memory serves me we had like 12 picks in the 2000 draft and the plan was drafting 2 qbs. Pennington was the named guy in the draft. Gio was the D2 guy with some buzz around him. Now, I don't know if the buzz was sorely having Walsh interested....in hindsight that looks to be the case. They took Rattay late in the draft as the second guy. The 4 Qbs going into camp 2000 was Garcia, Gio, Rick mirer and Rattay.

I'll be honest all I really knew about Brady was he was force to split reps early n his senior year with Drew Henson.

Thanks, I really appreciate that. I would like to apologize as well. I have gotten pretty heated with some people (you and brodiebluebanaszak) in particular. I know this is a touchy subject, but you two in particular, despite disagreeing with me, have made a lot of reasonable and intelligent points. Neither of you just flippantly dismiss the conversation like a lot of others do; taking the time to engage and make educated counterpoints makes debating stuff like this meaningful and worthwhile.

No worries and thank you, but you've got no reason to apologize. You weren't the one calling people names.

The knock on Brady I think was that they didn't think he was mobile enough. The reason I wanted them to draft him was completely emotional. I had some friends who knew the family and said he was a great kid and a life-long Niner fan. I only saw one game he played in and I thought he was very accurate and had a strong arm. He also seemed smart.
Montana's super bowl teams averaged 7 all pro/pro bowlers with the 84 team having the most with 10.

Brady's teams had 6 on average including 9 and 8 on the 07 and 11 teams.
No doubt about it. This will cast a shadow on Brady for all time. Joe's number one status is safe. Personally, the amazing consistency Joe showed in the clutch will always separate him from Brady. Not saying Brady hasn't been great but I think most people who go back far enough would pick Joe in a do or die situation.

I think it all just shows that with quarterbacks in the NFL, mobility is a good thing, and arm strength is a good thing, but to be a really good quarterback, let alone a great one, it is the gray matter, not the muscle matter, that is essential.
Brady vs Montana is a waste of time. You can't compare one player to another because the dynamics are different in every circumstance. Besides there are too many variables involved in a single game to accurately compare one persons body of work to another.

Comparing just makes good conversations and TV shows. The truth is, the whole process of comparing is a waste of time.

I think that's largely true. The brain is the most important thing, but intelligence isn't going to help someone who can't make the throws or escape pressure.

But they do on TV and in forums... personially I hate the Montana vs Brady.
Montana was the best of his era. And I think that is about as far as you can take it. Regarding Brady, he may now struggle to be considered the best of his.
