Well Marino did beat the Bears vaunted 46 defense in 85. Just struggled against the Niners Nickel defense in the SB but when they didn't go Nickel he burned them pretty good.

IMO, Marino is arguably the best pure passer in NFL history. That release was unbelievable.

They said him and Namath had the best 2 releases in NFL history. Kurt Warner from 99-01 might have the quickest. That was due to him playing in Arena Football.
Legacy secured? In my opinion, it was never threatened.
What I loved to watch was when the 49ers broke the huddle and everyone was in their stance and Joe would survey the defense before getting under center.

No one knows who goat is all time at qb due to different rules different eras. Montana is greatest post rozelle. as far as 70s go, its tough. Roger maybe, then joe. I think its quite interesting they were both mobile qbs with impovisational talent. Sound like brady? I hate roger staubach more than any other human being. But thats because he was inevitable.

What about Marino? He was putting up video game numbers in that era. Could Montana have done the same thing if he was in Miami? IMO, Marino has the greatest arm in the history of QBs, and it's not even close.

Very interesting point. Marino was the best thrower at qb I have seen. He could throw receivers catchable balls in more different trajectories and velocities than anyone else I have seen. Even Rogers -- who has the fastest release, doesn't really have Marino's repertoire. But that doesn't get to the whole story at qb. When you factor in the mobility decision making and play execution, the overall edge goes to a few others. But no one had the elbow genius of Marino of that there is no doubt.

So who do you think is better... Marino vs Montana

I would take Joe for the same reasons I prefer him over Brady. the mobility, the innate competitiveness + leadership + fast firm decisionmaking, the read discipline -- very good thrower too by the way -- almost unmatched as clutch performer.

So all of that adds up to Joe, for me.

For marino to have the same kind of success, he would need a line like the early 70s oakland raiders or dallas cowboys -- a fortress that would give him 6-8 seconds routinely to get the ball where he needed too,
...of course, every qb could use that, ....right?
I think the word you want to use is Marino may have been the BEST PASSER.. instead of thrower... to me, throwers are QBs like Elway, Moon, Kelly and Theismann.. QBs that are good in throwing to certain spots and expect their target to be there..

Passers to me are the ones who can get the ball to their targets w/o breakin the strides of their WRs... or even making those nice touch passes like Montana (#1), Marion, Peyton Manning, Brady, Rogers and Aikman...

and for the gunslingers... well, you have Favre, Cutler, Rivers, Big Ben, Fouts and Jeff George (who IMO still throws the nicest spirals the league has ever seen)..

We owned them in the Super Bowl.

I think I explained what I meant.

Marino started hot in the first quarter before Seifert adjusted and shut him down.
.. and up to this day, RB Tony Nathan believed that had Don Shula listened to Don Strock's advised of be patient and let him run the ball more in the 2nd QTR instead of trying to turn the game into a Marino Montana duel, Super Bowl XIX woulda been a much closer game.

I was at that game and I've re-watched it a few times. The Dolphins would have run if they could but they couldn't run on that defense. That defense was #1 in the NFL that year.
