I think this is all getting blown WAY out of proportion. Weve only had 1 player actually retire prematurely.
Patrick Willis was on two bad feet, and he didnt want to risk his longterm ability to walk on a few more years at 50% of his old capacity. He gave us a fantastic 8 year career. I wish he couldve stayed healthier, but thats how it goes sometimes. If it was an issue with the team, he wouldve requested a trade.
Justin Smith was coming off 14 HARD fought years in the trenches. His body probably took more of a beating than anyone. He had shards of bone cutting into his shoulder. He probably shouldve retired 2 years ago. The fact that it came during this offseason was coincidence.
Anthony Davis is taking a season off to let his brain heal from the injury he sustained last year. Hes so young that he probably figured he could afford to lose a season. It appears as a retirement, but he followed his announcement up by saying he would remain on the roster, and be back. He is still signed through 2020.
That leaves Chris Borland as the only guy who just up and quit on the team entirely. In that case it was just a guy who made a mistake by going into the NFL without really understanding the risks. Unfortunately for us, he realized these things after he started playing.
This weird narrative that the 49ers are all jumping ship makes no sense.
Were just seeing a changing of the guard all at once. New coaching staff, and older players moving on. Call the 49ers what you want, but they have been VERY responsible with money and the cap. They dont negotiate with free agents. They set a value price, and if someone outbids them, they let the player walk. Its a great way to stay out of "Salary Cap Hell", which we all remember.
As far as Tomsula goes, things dont add up with the people trying to say hes a joke of a hire, and the players are all leaving because of it. Every person in the business has had nothing but great things to say about Tomsula, and how loved he is by everyone hes in contact with. Jarryd Hayne picked the 49ers over the Seahawks and Lions directly because of him. Darnell Dockett chose to sign here. Torrey Smith chose to sign here on day 1, not even visiting anywhere else. Reggie Bush chose to sign here. If there was real issues in SF, there would be a buzz around the league, and players wouldnt be interested.
The build up of the Harbaugh fallout has the media on alert. Theyre looking for any and every reason to write a "possible problem with the 49ers" article.
I think it came down to this...Harbaugh was too stubborn, and too aloof to sit down with the front office and talk things out. He wanted to do everything his way, and be left alone. The problem is, when you dont fix your glaring problems after 4 years, thats going to get old. He never fixed the red zone offense, he never fix the challenge calls, he never fixed the playclock issues, etc. I think it came to a point where they gave him an ultimatum, to fire Roman and let the FO start calling some of the shots, and he told them to kick rocks. So, they fired the whole staff and hired the guy they already had in their back pocket as someone they saw as a legit franchise HC.
Justin Smith even said he didnt think, he "knew" that in 10 years Tomsula would still be a HC in the league, and that everyone on the team all knew that Tomsula would end up a HC, and it was a no-brainer.
3 players retired before they should have Wilis, Borland, Davis that is just insane number of players to retire in their prime. These men are obviously getting bad (for the team) advice probably from those pussies at Stanford medical.
. NFL should investigate us right after they investigate the Bucs.
