If one of them is 3 and out, send him back out there for a fourth series. Only if pass pro is holding up. I hope guys like Bethea, Brooks, Boldin, VD, come out as soon as there is a bead of sweat on their forehead.
The starters will get one or two series and that's it. So don't tune in late, unless you want to see a bunch of backups.
Both the offense and defense will look very vanilla. No reason to give anything away.
The only time I ever saw a 49er team unveil anything innovative in preseason was Bill Walsh' first or second season. As I recall, we were getting ANNIHILATED by the SeaHaggots. It was something like 38-0. We were down at the goal line -- heading in for a meaningless score -- when Walsh unveiled a tight end reverse. Caught everyone off guard. Nobody had seen anything like it before.
Of course we scored. And then went on to lose either 14 or ten games that season. Walsh' first year resulted in a 2-14 finish. The next year we won our first three games but then lost the next nine, before another mini three -game winning streak on our way to a 6-10 finish.
The next year we started 1-2 and people were beginning to suggest that Bill Walsh just didn't have what it took to be a real NFL head coach. And then, the light snapped on, and we won 12 out of the next 13 games.
Everyone remembers the statement win over the Cowboys (45-14). But a lot of those games were 9-3 or 10-9 victories.
