Kickers aren't players
I'm having a tough time with my final 53 projection.

3 QBs seems likely, I don't see CJ passing waivers, plus with COVID, you need another QB in case one of your top 2 get COVID.

3 or 4 RBs, Mostert, Coleman, and McKinnon are locks IMO, so it's down to Wilson or Hasty if we keep 4.

6 or 7 WRs, Deebo, Aiyuk, Taylor, Bourne, Pettis, and Jennings are locks IMO. Could they keep Austin, or roll with 6. They could always sign 2-3 WRs to the practice squad, maybe Austin is willing to take a PS salary of $12K a week, and is active, since 2 PS players can come up each week to the active roster. Also do we dress 5 or 6 WRs? I'm having a hard time with the 5 inactives.

4 TEs seems most likely, they kept 4 to begin 2019, they had to cut Kaden Smith, hated that decision, to elevate Wilson after Coleman's injury.

8 or 9 OL, I have Garland, Tomlinson, Brunskill, Compton, McKivitz, Williams, McGlinchey and Skule as locks, no other backup T with experience with Shon Coleman opting out. If we keep a 9th, it comes down to Reynolds, or a guy coming off the street, like Jamon Brown, I'm leaning toward 8, with them going with 9 if/when Richburg is activated.

9 or 10 DL, I have Ford, Bosa, AA, Jones, Kinlaw, Solly, Blair, Hyder as locks, Taylor starts on PUP, leaving the likes of Street, Givens, and Daniels fighting for 1 or 2 spots. I'd love to keep 10, but idk how it works to open the season, ideally when Taylor is healthy, we have 10 DL(Ford, Bosa, AA, Jones, Kinlaw, Solly, Blair, Hyder, Taylor, and either Street, Givens or Daniels). I like all 3 of the guys I have fighting for 1-2 spots. I'm afraid someone will scoop up Daniels, I think he and Givens can make it to the PS, I don't think Street would. Also how many are active for games? The locks are musts, I wish we could have traded Solly before TC, so we would have saved his TC roster bonus, but now we'd only save $825K, well not even that. I think Kinlaw could slide to NT if Jones gets hurt. Ideally when Taylor comes back, we have 9 active, since Taylor shined in limited time last year. Had a nice stop on, I think, a 4th and 1.

5 LBs Kwon, Dre, Warner and Walker are lock for me, leaves 3 fighting for the last spot, Nzeocha, Al-Shaair, and Flannigan-Fowles. Keeping Nzeocha means we lose at most $840K in cap room, since he's due $1.45M(he already earned a $50K workout bonus, which would be dead money). Also do we have 4 or all 5 active on game days.

5 or 6 CBs, Sherman, Moseley, and Williams are locks, I'm torn on Ahkello, he's one way the team could clear cap room if they were to trade him, but I doubt that happens, plus if he can step up, it'd be great. As for the other 1-2 CBs, Jason Verrett is having a nice camp, so if we keep Jamar Taylor, then he's likely inactive, so it's basically a waste of cap room, since his $750K salary would be GTD. I'm tempted to go with Harris as the 6th CB, and hope we sign 2 to the PS.

4 or 5 Safeties, Ward, Tartt, Moore are locks. Harris looks like he'll make it. If they keep Cyprien for week 1, his salary is fully GTD, meaning if cut, we're out $750K in cap room.

ST's isn't a question, Gould, Wish, and Nelson are the 3 locks.

Right now this is what I have for the 53.

QB(3): Garoppolo/Mullens/Beathard
RB(4): Mostert/Coleman/McKinnon/Hasty or Wilson
FB(1): Juice
WR(6): Deebo/Aiyuk/Taylor/Bourne/Pettis/Jennings
TE(4): Kittle/Reed/Dwelley/Woerner
OL(8): Garland/Tomlinson/Brunskill/Compton/McKivitz/Williams/McGlinchey/Skule
DL(9): Dee/Bosa/AA/Kinlaw/Jones/Solly/Blair/Hyder/Street or Givens or Daniels
LB(5): Kwon/Warner/Dre/Walker/Al-Shaair or Flannigan-Fowles or Nzeocha
CB(6): Sherm/Moseley/Williams/Witherspoon/Verrett/Taylor or Harris
S(4): Ward/Tartt/Moore/Harris or Cyprien
ST(3): Gould/Wish/Nelson

PUP: Richburg/Taylor
NFI: James
IR: Hurd/Thompson/Kongbo/Reynolds(Only if his injury is serious)
Opt Outs: Coleman/Brendel/Benjamin

PS: Wilson or Hasty, Hokit, Poindexter, Cracraft, Harrell, Swoope, Amichia, Jones-Smith, Givens, Daniels, Flannigan-Fowles or Al-Shaair, Harris, D.Johnson, Mayden, Foster

I'm going with only current players on the 80 man roster for the PS, though I can see Acy, Griffith or Finke brought back to the PS.

I find it hard to believe or see the likes of Tavon Austin, J.J. Nelson, Kevin White, Hroniss Grasu, Dion Jordan, or Johnathan Cyprien accepting a PS salary, which for them would be $204K for the season($12K a week), compared to $750K for the season(roughly $44,118 a week)

Right now, with the 76 players I have on the roster(53 active, 7 injured, and 16 PS), that leaves the team with only $1,552,648 in cap room, and they need up to $1,662,500 to pay back per game roster bonuses to 12 players, all of which are locks to make the team.

So the 49ers need to make some kind of move, either trading a guy with a higher salary than the minimum, or restructure Jimmy Garoppolo or Dee Ford's contract, it's gotta happen whether people want it to or not. They won't have any cap room in season for emergencies/roster moves, any cap room saved by releases will be negated by the player signed.

While I like Mark Nzeocha as a solid ST player, I think he's a goner, if we could trade him for a 7th that'd be nice, but that's doubtful.

Some cap tidbits for my roster.

If they keep Nzeocha they could lose as much as $840K in cap room
If they keep Wilson over Hasty they could lose as much as $220K due to Hasty making just $610K while Wilson makes $750K, plus Hasty has a $75K base salary guarantee, along with $5K prorated bonus that would become dead money.
If they keep Givens over Street they only save $65K
If they were to somehow for some reason cut Hyder, they'd save at most $340K
If for some reason they cut or trade Beathard they would only save $354,179 due to a player making $610K replacing him
If the 49ers keep Harris over Taylor they'd only save $75K
If they keep Flannigan-Fowles over Al-Shaair, they only save $65K

Toughest decisions for FO in a very long time! That's good, right?

Absolutely agree!

Hate this decision! I am leaning toward KS dropping both to practice squad just so it helps make it easier to keep 4 TE's or if Saleh is stubborn about keeping Harris on the 53 along with Cyprien. Like you, I think Harris would pass through waivers. Hasty sounds like a different kind of a weapon and is getting ooh's and ahh's from his teammates. Might be scared to take a chance exposing him.

Pretty much agree with entire assessment here. They just might test exposing Jennings to see if he makes it on PS. It seems as though lately, he is looking more like a rookie in camp. I think we would only dress 5 to start and maybe only go with 5 WR's on the initial 53 in order to carry someone like Reynolds for a day before he is placed on IR. Interior OL is critical right now. We have a lot of WR's in camp right now.

Yeah, it's 4 TE's for sure

I think it's 9. If not Reynolds as mentioned earlier, some very experienced IOL like Brown. They have 4 others in camp right now.

I think it is 10. Best scenario, Blair goes on IR designated to return and they keep Givens and Street on the 53. They might try to sneak Givens on 53. They have not been talking him up as much as Street but I think Given's may be the 3rd best interior pass rusher on the team.

They might go with 4 on the initial 53 in order to keep Cyprien. I think the 49ers go with a lot of nickle and dime sets and Cyprien can be used as a SS/LB.

I too think it might be 5. I think Jamar goes on PS. They have been working Mosely, Moore and Verrett a lot at nickel.

I think Cyprien is forcing their hand. I think they really want him, but he wants his $900,000+ and I think he gets it. I am with you on Harris. I think he would make it to the PS but Saleh loves him so they might go with 5 safeties.

This has been a fascinating off season under all the circumstances and we are likely not to have one like this again.

Hasty- I think Kyle feels he just can't take a chance exposing Hasty. When he exposed Ahmed, Miami picked him up. Hasty offers a unique skill-set not available in his other RBs. I even thought of a few ways to keep both Wilson and Hasty but in the end, it doesn't seem logical so Wilson gets cut and will be picked up. Probably by Seahawks.

Jennings- I believe he will not get picked-up do to the same reason he was not drafted until the 7th round. Reputation is suspect. I think he is a winner and will be an effective big slot receiver for the 49ers soon but Jordan Reed will fill that need in the mean time.

Dwelley- It's been eerily quiet on Dwelley's injury. He might be targeted to go on IR designated to return but needs to get on initial 53 in order to do it.

Shepley- 49ers need to keep 9 OL on the 53. They have to have 8 on the game day 48. I think Shepley is a special back-up with higher ceiling. Plays both OG positions and is taking the 2nd team reps at C. He will be our latest Brunskill.

Blair- I think he goes on PUP which eases up the 49ers decisions on DL. No other position group needs a stronger rotation than DL. Blair will come back fully healthy and raring to go after week 6. Street and Givens will play a bigger role in the mean time.

Al-Shaair- Tough decision here. Need to keep 5 LBs on the 53 with Warner on ice for the time being. Think it's time to move on from Nzeocha. He is really only a special teamer now with Al-Shaair and Flan a better option at LB, plus we can use the cap room. While I think Al-Shaair and Flan could both be passed up when exposed, Flan is more under the radar than Al-Shaair so it's Al-Shaair on the initial 53.

Cyprien- I still have them keeping Cyprien. He is still a better back-up option than M.Harris at this point in their careers and Cyprien has a wider range of skills at this time plus he played the same defense with the Jaguars. Saleh loves Harris so he's not going anywhere even though I think he wouldn't get picked up. Hence, 5 safeties.

Notes: If Blair is on PUP, then I'd give his spot to Shepley or a DB

If Warner can't go, then Nzeocha or Flannigan-Fowles makes it.

As for guys like Cyprien, I'm not sold on them guaranteeing his entire salary, I see him being brought back after week 1 when only 25% of his salary id guaranteed.

If Dion Jordan would accept a PS role, I'd add him over Barrett. But not sure he will, I've read somewhere that Cyprien has said he won't take a PS role.

I think Pettis is active, as are all 6 WRs. With Woerner or Dwelley being inactive, we never had 4 TEs active last year for any 1 game, yes we had 4 on the 53 man, but never on the 46.

Will be interesting to see week 1 inactives, and also the 2 PS players brought up, will Deebo and Aiyuk truly be ready for week 1, will Garland be ready? Also Warner, will he be cleared and activated before Sunday, I hope so to all, but I wouldn't be susprised if some aren't.

I really struggled with who would not dress. I went back and forth between the TE group and WR group. I agree that one of the TE's should not dress but I have a feeling they are going to run a lot against the Cardinals so I went with taking out Pettis assuming Deebo and Aiyuk play. Also, the 49ers will not always bring up PS players for game day. They have to be prudent since any individual player can be brought up twice.

I think it's in stone Garland will be ready. They haven't really made moves that would indicate otherwise. Warner is the concern. Really hope he plays.
