2nd & 13
This is still the first drive of the game. Another three level, High-Low read. This is a zone busting concept, but the yellow Corner route can win versus man coverage.
Versus Cover1
Incomplete to VD, the intermediate route. The defender on VD has outside leverage and defeats VD's Corner route, making it a very tough throw. The point of this play is more high-low, flooding of one side of the field.

Drive results in the blocked FG. Good job of Vance to run this play down and prevent the TD. That MIN drive resulted in a missed FG. Not sure what went wrong here. MIN overloads one side of the formation and the 49ers weren't ready for it. Vance is in a 2v1 situation and gives a bit too much attention to the outer most defender and not enough to the inner defender, the guy that ends up blocking the FG.

Remember the deep throw to Crabs in the @NO game? Kap rolled one direction and threw across the field. This is not a throw many QBs can make. Normally, when a QB rolls out in one direction, the field is cut in half and any backside routes are no longer target-able due to lack of arm strength.
Here is a play that results in a large gain where Kap showed off his arm strength to target a route on the other side of the field (vs ARI). The Crabs catch in NO was a broken play, this play (link) vs ARI is designed.

With the 49ers running a couple flood concepts by first faking the stretch left run on their first drive, the 49ers come back on the second drive and try to catch MIN napping.
I think it's Cover3.
Fake the stretch run left.
Rollout right, but look backside, hoping the safety rolls coverage to the strong side (same side Kap rolled to). The safety is alert and is able to provide double coverage on VD. Kap targets VD anyway, nothing else was open.
Some have stated VD should have kept running hard. I have a feeling Kap overthrew VD on purpose. This was a bit of a forced throw. Good job by the safety not falling for the misdirection.

2nd drive of the game.
This is a play that shows how Kap doesn't quite trust Torrey the way Flacco did. Understandable since they haven't built a rapport with one another (yet). Torrey will run a Stop 9 route. This is where he fakes a Go route (9 route), gets the CB's hips turned upfield because they are scared of his speed, then stop and turn around - similar to a Curl. Here are three examples of Flacco connecting with Torrey on Stop9 routes.

From one of the links above:
3rd & 7
Strongside has Levels concept. Torrey running a backside Stop9 route with the CB in press alignment - exactly like the three examples above. This is a 5 step concept.
Versus Cover 1 blitz
Shotgun snap (2 steps) + 3 step dropback = 5 steps. The ball needs to come out right now. Torrey is pushing off to gain separation as he comes to a stop. Compare this with how Flacco throws this route. Kap is looking at Torrey, but Kap is unsure if Torrey can gain separation.
Trust. Torrey will gain separation. CBs are scared of his speed. The window closed already. Kap scrambles.
The trust will come. Kap gets whacked but picks up the first down.

The two plays went for +8, then +9 gains by Hyde. Two very impressive runs.
The very next play (3rd play of the game).
1st & 10
vs Cover 1 blitz
3 level flood. I can't tell who orange is, it's either Vance or Celek. Hate how I can't tell jersey numbers on these black unis.
Playaction, faking the outside zone left run. This gets the defense flowing to their (defense's) right. Boldin pushes his man downfield.
Torrey comes across the formation. You see the three level of routes to give Kap a High-Low progression.
+11 to Torrey - the intermediate route on a 3 level flood concept.
I really liked this play. I think it highlights how effective Kap is outside the pocket. Nice design and execution.

Some things to work on, that 3rd and 7 should have been an easy pass to Torrey but Kap scrambles and still gets the 1st down. 1st real game with a new WR and what not, it will come

Rb in the flat, 4th read I guess, is open. Pass rush coming from LDE though, appears to hurry decision.
I suspect we start targeting those this week?
Great work guys.

Thanks guys, love these threads.
Wrath are you going to be able to chip in with a breakdown or analysis of the line play? I was very impressed as it looked to me that both lines were playing well but would love more depth on whether we looked good because the Vikings were so bad (ie were the missing assignments) or were we just dominating them. I think the latter from what I have seen.

It's an issue of safety. The center has to be "set" before he can snap the ball. You have to give the opposing team at least the opportunity to get set and ready first. If they disregard it, it's their problem. But, the center has to get down in a stance and not move for at least a second first. It prevents a team from having their players walk up and not get set and the center just reach down and snap the ball, if that happens, the defensive players will likely get caught not ready - it's not really fair, and there's a high probability of injury. This way, it at least gives the defenders a moment to get set themselves - again, if they don't that's their problem at that point.

Dont wanna quote all the gifs and pics, but wanted to say that even though this play didnt work i love what it shows out of the OC. Having a counter to an already successful play shows a playcalling acumen that was just comoletely lacking here last year. Thats good stuff and makes me feel good about the playcalling moving forward.Originally posted by thl408:Remember the deep throw to Crabs in the @NO game? Can't believe they didn't call holding on the Hyde spin TD. No way those guys would have made the tackle after the spin but both Devey and Pears slipped choke holds on them dudes. I've seen it called more times than not. Thank you Ref Jesus.

THL, that play reminds me of something from a Broncos Super Bowl win in the 90s and I've always wanted to see Kap pull off. May have to YouTube the play, but that stretch fake one way and throw back the other is a play that Elway completed to a WR for a long TD in the Super Bowl against the Falcons. The WR name escapes me. With the new zone stretches and Torrey, I'm hoping we can see them hit a few of those.

Hindsight 20/20 but that's a TD if Kap steps up to his right and takes off with the RB as his lead block on the one defender in coverage but I too think the LDE rushed his decision. Overall I think he played well and the things he worked on this offseason were certainly on display at times

Was it Rod Smith? You're right though, that super deep cross off of a stretch fake was a big part is Shanny's Denver offense.
