I said it right here on the blogs a month ago and got roasted, but Kendall Hunter was brittle, went down on first contact and should've been waived. Especially as we saw Mike Davis looking more like a short version of Carlos Hyde. I like Hayne but Tomusla and Tom Rathman should be smart and move Mike Davis to the #2 spot.

Other than Hyde our backups are all question marks.

Hunter - Not ready to come back. Injury settlement. Can't count on him to be back.
Bush - Looked good to start the game but I don't think he will last a full season. And he was out in the 1st Q of the 1st game.
Hayne - Great skills, learning on the fly can't really be trusted to be a solid #2 right now.
Davis - Lets hope he's ready to rock.

Hayne more than held his own as #2 against MIN and will only improve with reps. I still think his block for the VD 19 receive on 2nd and 20 hasn't been given enough credit.

well I hope he eats some extra vegemite cause Bruce has an ankle issue whatever that means and Bush is not traveling with the team to PITT.
I have predicted it before the seaon that Hunter will not be with the team..

Hyde

Bush

Davis

Hayne

Miller

Millard - did anyone pick him up??
I brought this up in the Hyde thread. I consider us a running team. We want to wear you down over the course of a game. Bush is old and likely unable to be a workhorse at this point, while Davis and Hayne probably aren't starting caliber. That leaves Hyde to shoulder a very heavy load. If he goes down, I think we are screwed.

Ps. I do like Davis, but not sure he is ready for prime time.

It doesn't mean I hate the FO or the team or other posters. We can disagree on things you know.

NC did tell me the reason Vance hurt his back is because Harbaugh made him block too much, lol. Has to be one of the most ridiculous things I've every read on here.

Not even close.

I think Davis is ready but perhaps not on all the nuances as much as Hayne...which surprises, but pleases, me. Davis is very good RB and I expect he will be used quite a bit this year.

Hayne is a great story and his ability to take a hit and avoid hits is a rare ability...or at a rare level. His fumbled punt was unfortunate but this often makes guys mad and they become even more focused! Watch out Steelers!

Just not sold on Hayne or Davis yet. That's all I'm saying.

However it happens, I just hope we find a nice "one/two punch" by next year.

Someone already started a thread on this ... might be on page 2 by now. Great video link in there. And you are right, there is a resemblance.
What's Jewel Hampton up to? rR maybe Kevin Barlow? Glen Coffee?

Understood, but few teams are "sold" on their second and third stringers...at any position! Hunter was our insurance if Hayne or Davis didn't work out but he was cut after not being 100% in preseason. Is he being held in the wings in case the team needs him? Also, Gaskins is on the PS and is a decent backup himself...though not up to NFL standards for a starter.

Jewel Hampton recently signed with the Montreal Alouttes. When reached for comment about coming back for the 49ers, Jewel stated "Je déteste l'Amérique."
Eh ...not concerned. Bush is a little banged up and everyone is worried now. But RB is one of the easiest places to plug in a young guy and have them perform decent enough to get by. By all estimates Hayne is handling pass pro great and he can run well enough should we be struck with disaster in a game and lose Hyde then Davis is a nice piece to have in an emergency to shoulder the running load going forward if needed. Even without Bush we have more at the position than most teams and it doesn't sound like his injury is any sort of long term concern.

These threads baffle me a little...people act like other teams are just stocked to the gills with starting quality talent at every position right down to the their 4th string.

We aren't really a one/ two punch kind of team traditionally. We are among the last holdouts who prefer to go with a "bell cow". Fortunately we have also been pretty good at finding that true number one guy over the years and fingers crossed Hyde is shaping up to continue the proud tradition.
