I'm a big defender of all players 49er, but he's starting to get to me slightly.

FFS, he used to be our only receiving threat and still did damage with Smith....WTF??

I'm scared of being soft also, that's why I stopped drinking Jamba Juice.

Their d-line owned the LOS. Those big passing plays happened in the 2nd half because they let off the gas a little bit, and Kap had more time as a result.

The o-line was not going to hold up when the game was still competitive.
Only good thing about this game is this wasn't kaepernicks fault. Our defense was completely outmatched we should have abandoned the run in the 2nd quarter Hyde's fumble never should have happened.
correct me if I'm wrong, but did we get in the red zone 5 times and only come away with 10 points?
Kap had fantasy numbers and we got blown out. Kap hatees, what could he have done better?

Yup. Our plan in the RZ was all wrong. Wasted too many downs trying to run it in. Spread that s**t out and let Kap make a play.

Just huge mental mistakes all day. TBPH I kind of expected the game to go this way though obviously not as bad. Big Ben is a great downfield passer and Brown is amazing and getting DBs to think he is running full speed and then shifting into next gear to make a play.

This is the kind of offense that will absolutely destroy a scheme like Mangini's when the pass rush doesn't get to the QB. Cant expect Safeties to show blitz and fall back against WRs that all run in the 4.3s. Gives the secondary no chance especially with no pass rush. Kudos to the steelers, they came out fired up and took advantage of their long layoff vs our short week, the intensity difference was noticeable.

The main positive I saw was when it looked like Kap was starting to revert back to mr. happy feet and start jitterbugging all game… he was able to stop and get centered and keep his eyes down field. In the past he would of just kept trying to run forward instead he skirted the LOS and made some plays.

Don't think we are as bad as we played today or as dominant as the Vikes game. Lots of growing pains for this young team but eager to see how they rally from this for next week. As predicted there will be allot of ups and downs this year.
This, it looked like the defensive game plan was to have the safeties let the wide receivers beat us deep all day.
Acker is getting some blame that is completely undeserved. He was in zone often when they were completing passes to Brown and the safeties were out of the picture.
That fumble by Hyde was as much Kap's fault as the ball was almost pointing vertically when he handed it off.
Compete lack of focus by the offense with some of the penalties, all of the drops, 2 by Boldin, 1 by Davis, and the td drop was pathetic for not having both hands on the ball when you go to the ground.
Still all of those things can be cleaned up and considering we had drives of 17 plays twice and 15 and a quick strike this offense looks promising.
However, we really need to score in the red zone.

Yep.

We couldnet get to the QB, and it looked like we didnt even try. I saw very few blitzes. Bowman was non existent, Lynch was double teamed all day. The 49ers had no fire today.

One thing we HAVE to fix, is preventing the deep ball. Im not going to sit here and be all butthurt that Fangio left, because he had his flaws too...But he was ALWAYS about preventing the home run ball. Today we got beat deep almost more than Fangio ever did as DC. If you arent getting to the CB, protect the deep ball.

Today was partially a case of starting slow, and getting too far behind to really pound the running game. The Hyde injury didnt help. If we came out with more energy, maybe the game turns out differently. Big Ben had ALL DAY to throw. He picked us apart with fantastic throws.

The bright spot is Kap. He looked phenomenal. He wasnt getting much protection, yet he stepped up in the pocket and didnt get skiddish. The best football of his career is still yet to come. Hes making leaps and bounds of progress.

Good
Kap was incredibly impressive. he still had command of the offense. When they realized he should have the ball in his hands the offense was much better. he got into a great rhythm and it carried throughout. he kept his head up in the 2nd half and was seen encouraging the team even when the game was out of reach.

Bad
Offensive coaching. Get out of the run oriented offense sooner, spread them out and test them.
Defensive coaching. The scheme this week was completely wrong. It happens. Needed way more awareness and needed to make sure we took away everything over the top. Take away everything over the top and make sure that they have to dink and dunk. Our run defense was actually really good. We did good on 1st and 2nd down but 3rd down shot plays killed us all game.
Yes Williams scored 3 touchdowns but they were all close range they didn't run the ball down the field and they usually got stopped on 1st and 2nd down.

Defense didn't bring it today. they need to check themselves.

This to the point.

So much this. Kaep kept himself composed through all of the pressure that was put on him today due to bad OL play. Another thing that happened to him in the past when he was pressured was that "deer in the headlights" look and he was looking at the d-lineman and not down the field. Today was a huge insight to the progress he has made and I'm very happy about that.
GOOD
Kap - stayed composed, kept his eyes down field despite ridiculous pressure (guys coming completely unblocked)
TSmith - getting into the game plan, putting that deep threat on film
MDavis - got better as game went on, impressive balance on that one hit on the sideline

BAD
Flat - The defense seemed flat, walking around, getting up slow, low energy - guys standing around after Williams runs. Mental lapses. (Agree with other posters on this point) This is not reflective of coaches and players that supposedly are focused on their health and staying fresh for the season. MAYBE there is some reason that football offseasons and training camps are hard so that guys are well conditioned when the season arrives?? Hmmm, we'll see how this pans out.
Hyde - seemed gassed from last week - he was running tentative, getting up slowly from every play
RedZone - OC play calls were predictable and repetitive - very little improvement from last year in that department
Secondary - this was mostly scheme problems in my opinion allowing ABrown to run free - Wilhoite on a WR deep
DL - front seven pressure was non-existent on a guy like Ben - the little pressure we got just makes Ben better
COACHING - the Steelers were well prepared for what they saw on film and countered it well - ZBS stretch plays - countered; CK reverse roll-outs - countered; 3 TE sets - countered. It looked to me like the Steelers ignored the 3 TEs and concentrated the DL on the C-RG weakness - smart - but I'd have to re-watch the game to confirm.

UGLY
OL - play was terrible in any long yardage situation, TERRIBLE
DL - Run defense seemed soft compared to last week - were they gassed like Hyde??

REALITY
DEFENSE - I think this is the Defense we are going to get with Mangini - the exotic stuff looks like genius against mediocre and bad teams, but looks terrible against top flight QBs with a decent OL. For example, Bridgewater won't kill you when you put an ILB on a receiver, Ben will find it with a few seconds of time (good OL) and make you pay. Unfortunately, Mangini is known for being arrogant, so I doubt he will be more conservative against guys like Ben.

OFFENSE - Our OL is going to struggle against active DLs - I just don't see C-Martin and RG-Devey getting better against stunts and blitzes - they seem mentally lost - and as I've said before - a weak RG makes a RT look terrible too because the outside pressure has a two way go now inside and outside.

CK - encouraged with his development

Coming out with a game plan of let's force-feed Hyde was not smart considering the potent offense the Steelers have... not every team in the NFL will be like the Vikings in Week 1. IMO it does nothing for the continued growth of CK and the offense to pretend you're a road-grading smashmouth team... granted Steelers' D let up some in the 4th qtr, and I'm not saying the 49ers need to come out looking to throw 40+ times, but I think they'll be better-served with a more "wide-open" offense.
bad:
brooks going offsides every single game.

Agree 100% - I did NOT see that "deer in the headlights look" - great progress IMHO
