It's a deep horizontal stretch. It's not a terrible design - it's actually the play the created "the catch-2". That was "4-jet all go". Just 4 verticals and it stretched out the quarters coverage from GB and hit Owens in the middle of the field. In theory, it should work very well against a 3 deep coverage. You have 4 receivers in an area defended by 3 defenders.

here, we're going to run this odd version of cover-2 that we ran against Minn. You might remember this defense. We're going to play man-coverage underneath with 3 deep zone defenders. Pitt is expecting a blitz, so they keep both a TE and RB to help protect. We will drop 7 into coverage against 3 receivers, no way should they get anything on us. One key here is, Reid is playing very up close to the LOS to try and help sell this all out-blitz look.

At the snap you see Tartt fire out deep, same with Reid. Bowman is just clued in on the RB, he's not coming on a blitz. It's a 4 man rush, including: Lynch, Wilhoite, Carradine, and Brooks. And Wilhoite is only coming because the TE stayed in to block. So, Mangini was trying to call a 3 man rush with 8 in coverage.

You see Reid is trying to make it back for over-the-top help. Acker is in really good position, however, he tries to guess the route from the WR and thinks Brown is going to do a comeback route and stutters for just a half second.

he quickly realizes Brown is just running a "go" route and tries to recover, but you see the separation he already allowed.

It creates just enough of a hole to drop the ball right in, that's a really, really good throw by a QB. However, that's what the elite guys do.

Reid gets there just .1 seconds too late. Also a good job by Brown to hang on to the ball.

Here you see how we tried to show heavy pressure.

You see the 4 man rush and how Pitt kept the TE and RB in to block. 7-4 blocking.

Last pick says it all, DBs playing with their backs to the ball to often.
14 pages in..conclusion we're fcked cuz mangini has dropped all the complexity of Lord Fangio's schemes to one that looks stupid and exposes our defense

didn't trust this coaching staff to use all our talent...

god i miss fangio

I hate it for 3rd and 7. The catch 2 was basically goal to go from the 25 with 2 shots left at the endzone. I like all verts then, I just think there is better stuff to call on 3rd and 7.

On this particular play, I'm assuming they were running the all verts to either catch a seam or hopefully draw coverage from the curl at the sticks.

He's doing great in Chicago, giving up almost 40 points per game. It was time for change and a lot of defensive coordinators would have looked good with the defenses we have had the last 3 years.

Vic is a great coach. Makes good decisions. He just took on a wreck and doesn't have the pieces. That Bears D is horrible. One of the worst in the league last year. In 2 years he will prob turn it around. If given the right players.

Oh and I still think he should be our HC right now.

Last time I checked, Fangio's defense got shredded by the Cards last Sunday.
there really is a lot of morons on this list now ripping fangio ahhahaha

FANGIO WOULDVE STAYED HERE if they hired adam gase...we'd have adam gase/fangio and tomsula doing what he does best..coaching fangio's scheme on gameday to the players on the sideline

there really are a lot of stupid people on this board if they want to down play vic fangio...he was amazing and the players knew it
How many plays did Kap miss on...looking off guys, missing open WR's, wrong reads etc?

I'm assuming his numbers are better this year but I'm curious how many chances he missed?

He made some good plays. Made some dumb plays. Screwed up some passes.

Kap blew a read option run when he cut right back into the LB being picked up by Staley. Staley tried to block the guy and knocked the ball away from Kap. 49ers recovered the fumble.

Kap missed a pass to Mike Davis. They faked the end around and a good pass to the front corner of the endzone could have been a TD. Kap over threw it out of bounds.

Kap missed a swing pass to Mike Davis. Rush from the DL on the right side. Kap tried to float one over the DL being blocked and overthrew it.

Kap stared down the left side of the field way too much. He missed open guys to the right side of the field because he simply did not look their way.

He made some good throws. Had a real nice slide step and moved up in the pocket to hit VD on the sideline of course VD was hit and dropped the ball.

Kap had a nice read option run when he went outside of Bruce blocking a guy for a nice gain. Kap dove 2 yards short of a first down tho. If you're going to dive head first might as well pick up the first. Or just slide.

I'd say overall he's playing well half the time. He's got to look off DBs or he's going to start getting picked. He's been lucky so far he doesn't have an int. Has to start picking up blitzes better because the OL is horrible.

I really don't understand the conclusions that are the complete OPPOSITE of what's been discussed. I really don't get it. I really believe some people choose to be argumentative and bitter without reasoning. They dominate first game defense and what did some say? It's just one game. They fly to a rested, prepared opponent on a short week against an elite QB and offense that has been tops in the league for 3 seasons and the resulting conclusion? I wish we had our old coaches back. LOL. Well I'll use the same logic. It was just one game. Making excuses for Fangio is a joke in Chicago - the Bears have been playing poorly, period - AT HOME. No excuse. And many here thought Gase was a better option than Fangio and both are aided by a 2-time super bowl appearing HC in Fox. The Bears should play better - point blank. Oh it does come down to talent does it now? I thought Baalke was a terrible GM who has failed?

Double double standard standard.

If you look at how the team went about trying to stop Pitts offense you can clearly see that our coaching staff had no idea what they were doing.

Those zone plays were never going to work. No way Bowman or Whilhoite can cover Darrius Heyward-Bey. When they ran more of a nickle set with Ward there was decent coverage. Couple times Miller the TE was Bens only option. They should have been doing that all game. In the first half the coaches simply did not put the players in the best positions to compete in that game.

Looks as if Martin was scared to extend his arms. He just pushed his shoulder into the defender.
I noticed every time they ran play action they rolled Kap to the right. Right into the worst blocking side of the line. It wasn't hard for the defense to stop. Made it nearly impossible to make the plays work.

Most read option runs were to the left and right into a LB. Only seen one time that it worked. Kap didn't look fast. He was run down by the middle LB almost every time. Twice pulled down by the back of his jersey. Kap should be able to take a line to the sideline and beat that LB every time. He made some really suspect moves and cuts on his runs.
and the drops in this game my oh my how many were there?

just sloppy all around
