Ouch, I finally persuaded myself to endure another watching of the game. Man, I don't see us beating Pitts no matter how many times we play them this yr. Same for NE, probably same could be said for GB and now SEA with kam chancellor back. If we improve, coaching learns as they go, we play well, then no complaints from me. CArds are no pushover and I have us down for 2 Ws over them, which now, looks a lot harder than early in PS when I made the prediction. I will be happy to see us keep it close, play well, coach a lot better, execute better ( 3 ugly drops that were truly spot on completions), and so on. Whiffs on the young R side of the line, mis blocs, ie taking the wrong guy, half blocks, oh boy. It was tough to watch that pitts game again. They were tough and they were ON. Really on. We got beat up side of the head, and watching it was just ugly . Don 't know how jonny del and Thl can do that in massacres. They are all pros.

I would pay top dollar to compare the coaches notes with the notes in this thread. Our coaching staff is full of seasoned NFL vets, I can't imagine what's been said in this thread is beyond their grasp. I'd be curious to see if they agree with our resident experts or if there are other levels to the strategy of football we just don't understand.

On the other hand, its one thing to break down a scheme/play or game plan after the fact, but its a whole other thing to diagnose whats going on before its all been revealed and only 30 seconds between plays.

It sounds to me like we flat out got out coached and out played. Steelers are just a better team right now (coaches and players). If they wanted to, they could of put up a 60 burger.

I mentioned this in an earlier post, but there definitely is a deeper level we aren't discussing enough in these film threads. Speaking just for myself, I can't spot intricate details of gameplanning when I'm watching the film. We all see the general gameplanning. Such as in this game, the 49ers tried to get the ground game going early. On defense they tried to confuse PIT's OLine protection scheme by crowding the LoS with the safeties.

The level of detail I am referring to is that I can't make the connection between how a team lines up in a certain formation in the 1st quarter, then if they do it again later in the game, and how they ran a different play to fool the defense. Or how a defense did X when faced with a certain down and distance, then later in the game they did Y in the same down and distance to fool the offense.

There is always a cat and mouse game going on between OCs and DCs, and that's what's hard for me to spot. I just look at a play and can tell what happened in a vacuum. I can't tell why it happened, as in what was the OC/DC thinking. Was he using a certain play to set up another play later in the game?
For the record, I think you and Jonny are doing an incredible job and in no way was I trying to imply anything negative about this thread. I was just making the point that you just made (i.e. The chess match beyond the X and O s)

^ Yeah...what he said.

Only a few times have I been able to see how we used certain formations to set some things up. But there's so much that goes into a gameplan, it'd be absolutely impossible to know for sure what all they were trying to do and what went wrong and what they did about it.

The football junkie inside me wants to know it all, but the rest of me realizes I wouldn't have the time anyway hahaha.

LOL...brave soul! I haven't watched the whole game but did watch a couple of plays. Roethlisberger was on and if the pass rush stays null it will be very difficult for the 9ers to beat any of the better QBs.
Just a note for next week, but on the final drive before halftime, Martin just snapped the ball while Boone was looking back at Kap. These guys still aren't close to being on the same page yet.
