As much as I cringe watching this, now there is GREAT film for all of our CB's to learn from. I can't wait to see if they've learned from this.

That is good coaching. A big reason why Pittsburgh has had so much success with their WR's. Randy Fichtner who is their QB's coach and someone I really wanted as OC with the 49ers, was formerly the WR coach and helped to tutor up guys like Wallace and Brown. Richard Mann took over when he got bumped up to QB coach and has kept it going.

Terrific. We're talking about a 5'10" WR here. Technique is flawless. This is why he's a top WR in this league.

Guys, I snipped the slow mo GIF of Acker vs Brown and replaced it with pictures. That was a very large gif.

No worries...it's the 3rd picture in that series where Acker is beat.
Great work fellas. At some point can either of you take a look at wtf Ahmad Brooks is doing out there? And who exactly are the 4 down lineman in nickel and dime packages? or are they doing a lot of rotating.
I know Jonny mentioned it in his first post, but I thought Ward played a really good game, even though he only got 20 snaps. I know it seems like the coaching staff wants him to play more S with a little nickle corner, but with Reid and Bethea entrenched as starters and Tartt as the SS/LB in the big nickel then I think Ward should be our #3 CB. He looks like our quickest CB and to me looks better than last year. I thought he was solid last year but this year he looks like he gained about 5-10 lbs but is still as quick.

I would like to see him move back to the full time #3 cb role and use Johnson against bigger WR's or TE's.

Lastly I agree Wards skill set is better as a Safety so he can attack down hill, but to me he's got too much talent to only play 10-20 snaps a game
Our red zone offense stunk but in the first half when we were on the 2 yard line. There was two times where poor blocking made Kap essentially throw the ball away. We could have easily scored there. Just the TE and FB missing assignments. On one VDavis doesnt hold his guy long enough and no.55 has a clear path to Kap, Kap has to throw it out the right side endzone. On the next play Miller and RB Davis allow no.55 again to get to Kap unblocked, and again Kap has to throw it away right side of endzone. On both plays there was a man open. Can't really blame that on bad redzone play-calling. Just terrible blocking.

This is the dropped pass by Boldin that could have extended the drive. Crap result, but I wanted to highlight it as we try to understand Geep's passing offense. There were so many flood concepts in the MIN game that I was sure there was more. I'll try to highlight some passing plays as we take a sneak peak into the 49er playbook.

The progression is shown (white numbers). This type of progression is easy on the QB's eyes. Notice how all the routes break in the same direction. Kap simply scans from right to left with the routes entering his line of sight.
Versus Cover1 blitz

Kap looks to his first read, VD. VD is covered. With the defender on VD playing outside leverage and being able to attack downhill, Kap red lights VD and will move to his next read.

Boldin enters Kap's line of sight.

I like the order of progression and how it works to help the QB. Before anyone says anything like, "oh they dumbed down the progression for Kap", I'll post a play from the SB where Brady has the same type of progression. Good designs aren't effective and complex, good designs are effective and simple.

Notice Kap's head as he moves from VD to Boldin. Dropped pass.

Good to know.

It's been awhile since the 49ers have completed a pass on a Deep Curl route. Only a WR with speed is going to get this done and this is the first completed pass to Torrey, as a 49er, that puts his deep speed threat on display.

The colors mean nothing. Just to differentiate between the routes.
Torrey running a Deep curl (yellow) versus a CB giving him cushion. Torrey needs to quickly eat up that cushion, and as soon as the CB flips his hips to turn upfield, curl the route.
Hyde with a nice blitz pickup (black)
versus Cover1 blitz

CB turns to run upfield, Torrey starts his curl, Kap already mid windup.

+14 yards.

This is that same play that Flacco and TSmith made a killing on right? You mentioned last weeks game that Kap hesitated to make this throw to TSmith and that they needed to make this a gimmie in the future.

Yeah, the RZ issues certainly seem like a major combination of poor pass protection, blown PP's, key penalties, some predictability and fade routes (wrong calls or wrong personnel or inaccurate throws?). We've had about 10 RZ trips. I bet these coaches are looking hard at these.

physical, JAMMING press coverage at it's finest.
Will be interesting to see the adjustments we make for facing the Cards.

Another 3-4 front D and vertical passing game.

From the SB

I'd like to see a breakdown of the 2-pt conversion after the Torrey TD as it's the only short yardage goal line success they had in the game. Would be an interesting comparison to the other RZ plays. (No rush on breaking this play down, though).

Rewatching that 2-point conversion. Kap should never throw a fade unless its to Torrey, period. Man we need to target Torrey 10-12 times a game when we have to throw the ball 30-40 times, imo.
