Hey jonny or thl, did you notice a big difference in the first half and second half with the Steelers defense?

I have not gotten to the 2nd half. But I'll be sure to check it out. I am assuming this is whether to see if Kap's 2nd half success in the passing game was aided by PIT easing off the gas pedal?

Yes. There is a lot of debate about how to put his stats in the second half into context and while I understand the idea of "garbage time" it doesn't jive with the information that he was pressured on a higher percentage of passes and overall more in the second half. So I just wanted to know what you guys saw, were they laying off in the secondary and pushing more on the offensive line to get to Kap.

To add, I'm a fan of mixing up the coverages. Like thl408 noted, throw in some off coverages. Throw in some pattern matches. Throw in some press. Some jam press. Throw in some pre and post snap confusion.

BUT play sound 'technique' within the calls. Better angles for the S's. Square up and knock the WR's off their routes to ensure the S's have time to retreat and recover. Use the right personnel...Reaser may have been a better match-up in press here b/c of his recovery speed. When you bring Johnson in, use his strength and length in jam to defeat a 5'10" WR at the LOS.

All this is correctable and they were just a bad matchup for us with our personnel choices, technique and game plan at this time. The Cards may be the only other team who can do the same with a veteran QB and electric speed at WR.

Own it. Fix it. Move on...

Perfect illustration on poor press technique and an even better illustration on how to defeat press. This is where Jerry Rice made a living; defeating press within the first three steps. Acker is defeated on the second move here. Press is an art and while size and strength (Johnson) can help a lot, it's really the technique that is critical here...right at the LOS.

As much as I cringe watching this, now there is GREAT film for all of our CB's to learn from. I can't wait to see if they've learned from this.

I think in the stills it looks more like a lack of technical skill by the CB but, in the play it looks like that little juke while he squared with him really got him to bite inside and that half a second decision really stopped him from having a chance on such a savvy receiver. That little hesitation and flex really cost him there. Of course I have no idea what proper technique is for a press corner vs. a speedy receiver might be.

Agreed. Garbage time is usually the final 4 or 5 minutes of a game. Not an entire half. Like last week we gave up 60 yards at the end of the half to milk the clock. No team milks a clock for half a game.

This. The garbage time narrative with 30 minutes left in the game is absurd.

You nailed it. Like boxing he set him up on those subtle moves. You can see it easier in real-time. Acker is squared to punch him with both arms but Brown got him to lean one way while he squirted out the other...enough to where Acker barely touched him with one arm rendering that jam useless. Crafty vet moves.

JR made a living doing that...setting up DB's even in off coverage! Most is done within the first three steps.

Lol, nothing like milking the clock when you're down 10 points. The offense is more enjoyable to watch this year even in a loss when the plays get in with more time and have more continuity. I felt the offense was a disjointed wreck last year.

garbage time is a bull s**t narrative. Most of these guys like (brees, Brady, stafford, basically all the 5000 yard guys) are chucking the s**t around til there's like 2-3 minutes left. That's about the only way you get 650+ attempts(700 attempts in some cases).
