It's that the coverage, the way it's supposed to be played, calls for the safeties to play deep. Here is STL running Tampa2. Boldin (backside WR) exploits the hole in coverage the same way it was done in post#167

more Tampa2

Fangio never called this coverage. Mangini likes it. Without a legit 4 man rush, I hate it. The SB winning Bucs made it work because they had Simeon Rice and Warren Sapp.

Fangio is smart. and to think he was the first to interview for the HC vacancy

Sure thing. I kind of stopped at around the 3rd quarter and didn't finish the game. The last drive is worth looking at a bit in depth. I'll get to it later.

First play of the drive we come out in man-coverage.

at the snap, we lock up the receivers well.

still got em locked.

still got em locked.

The rproblem is a lack of, and breakdown of pass rush. Dorsey, for some reason, takes a really wide rush lane.

Dorsey gets pushed outside and Armstead allowed the lineman to get his hands on him first, you see he's trying to fight off the Tackles arms. WIth his long arms, he should be attacking the lineman first, think of all those times Aldon bull rushed those guys with his long arms, he got those arms on that guy first, before those tackles could get their hands on him.

an undisciplined and uninspiring rush allows Eli to take off and scramble for 11 yards....Eli Manning, people....
I'll continue where you left off. When I watched it live, I thought it was Mangini and his weak soft zones. In my defense, I was not sober. Here's how the rest of the plays unfolded.
4Q 1st & 10 (2nd play of the drive)
This is the exact same play as in post#30, down to the same formaiton. The 49ers were also in man coverage in the 2nd quarter when NYG called it. Here, it's the same offensive play versus the same coverage call - Cover2 Man.

In the 2nd quarter, Bow went over the pick/rub. Here, Tartt goes under the pick. Either way, there's separation created.

+11 yards.

Here is what jonny cut up. Same play, same formation.

Texas concept versus Cover 2 Man

It might be RB option (and not Texas), but with Tartt shading with outside leverage, Vareen breaks inside and has room to operate.

+16 yards

Look at that....and the ole school WCO concepts continue. That's basically "bingo cross". That was a Walsh staple.

This is Brock's near INT.

Eli hits the top of his drop. Reid has not gained depth and is not acting like a cover 2 safety. The underneath defenders (Tartt, Bow, ward) never seemed concerned with any pattern matching. Rather, they just manned up on whoever they were lined up across from.

Eli is mid windup. This is a horrible decision to target the WR on the Go route as he is bracketed by Brock/Bethea. Coverage is tight all around.

Notice the wasted steps by Brock as he takes a curved path to where the ball would land. This is after he has already located the ball. If that doesn't happen, he may have been able to cradle the ball cleanly. Woulda coulda shoulda.

I can see why the rivals podcast called this Quarters. Reid acts like he is playing Quarters - definitely not cover2. The rest of the players act as though they are playing Cover2 Man. I'm not sure. Open to thoughts from others.

4 Verticals vs Cover 2 Man

Lynch applies quick pressure and Eli throws it into the grass. I don't think Eli was outside the tackle box and he didn't throw it near any WR. But I'm biased.

Incomplete pass.

Screen pass versus Cover 2 Man
Here is an example of how press alignment causes poor reads for the DBs in coverage as their eyes are locked on the WR in front of them.

All the DBs in man coverage have their backs turned to the play. Tartt (29), the player closest to Reaser (27), must have his eyes locked on his WR because he doesn't respond very well to the screen pass. Vareen will take the screen pass. With the C leading the way and only Reaser near by, this is a bad sign for the defense.

+24 yards.

I'll stop here. The next play is a pass interference call on Acker for 8 yards. Then the next play is the TD.
Could you possibly make a gif of the Boldin TD off of sprint opt? Always nice seeing that play work.

^^^Thanks....it's a thing of beauty.....we need more of this play in the redzone, especially 5 yards and in. Out usually open 90% of the time and it gets kap out of the pocket quickly

Here's Joe running sprint option

With Kap being able to quickly cover ground on the sprint, he makes a much easier angle to target Boldin. That looked easy. Need more quick throws like that in the red zone. The Celek TD was quick too.

Just to put it out there for those that haven't actually seen the play on paper or visited the concepts thread this is sprint option:

The sprint action pass is when the QB first step away from center is at a 45 degree angle. This allows the QB a great angle to the flat receiver as you mentions. If by chance the flat is covered the QB can run or if you're as chill and cold blooded as Joe you do what he did on the catch.
