Also Torrey is fast and gets open a lot. hopefully him and Kaep start connecting with some regularity now. Plus Torrey draws penalties. I can think of at least 2 penalties he drew against the Giants

Definitely. Could be wrong, but I think those were the first penalties Torrey has drawn so far this season. Last year he led the league in that category. We should take a deep shot to Torrey at least once every quarter when he gets 1-on-1 matchup on the outside. Force the defense to honor it, and there's at least a 50% chance the pass is completed or draws a penalty. Also like seeing him in the slot and stretching the field vertically from there. That's where he drew the 28 yard penalty.

Yeah, I think this game had the first penalties drawn by Torrey this season. Kap and Torrey need to develop chemistry and trust. Flacco, many times, just threw it up for Torrey when there was zero separation. 1v1, good enough, just chuck it up there. Torrey is good at jockeying for position once he locates the ball so I would trust him to battle and prevent an INT if thrown decently.

Exactly. If he's got 1v1, throw it to a spot where he can make a play. I like what Boldin told Kap leading up to the Giants game. Don't worry about being perfect, just chuck it and let the receivers make the play for you.

Here's the next play after the Boldin 9 yard catch.
This play is symbolic of the 49ers red zone woes. 3rd &1. A TD helps so much here, being down 3-13. But just gaining a yard would earn them 1st and Goal from the 3 yard line.

49ers will use playaction, then roll Kap to the right. To help sell the playaction, they will pull Tiller (61, purple) as if they were running Power. Cue the Benny Hill music in your head.

As Tiller pulls, he trips over Martin's right leg.

As Kap executes the playaction, Hyde collides with Miller, preventing Miller from quickly releasing into his route. wtf

Kap completes the playaction, looks up and sees this. Nothing but a defender in his face.

No one open. Tough throw on the run to Boldin with no separation. Incomplete. FG time.

This is pretty.....it's like a double slant concept combined with a slant-flat. Great, great play design.

Giants really played this FB slide nice.
^^ That 3rd &1 playcall in the RZ drove me mad. I don't know if that's Geep or Kap checking to that play at the line,

The Niners have shown a clear tendency to run that play in the RZ for the past several years. It's guaranteed to be called once, maybe twice in the same RZ trip. Doesn't surprise me to see defenders not bite the fake and instead rush hard off right end to close off the rollout. That defender was in Kap's face instantly.

Would rather run power on both 3rd and 4th down. 2 downs to pick up the 1 yard and go for the TD. At worst, you pin them deep.

Would also like to see the Niners use more 4 and 5 wide in the RZ. Spread the defense out thin to open up passing lanes, or hand the ball off to Hyde.

How easy was this.....now if this was Bill or Holmgren or Shanny you would have seen this same play 6-7 more times from about 5 different formation. It's just money, because eventually the defense is gonna want to stop that flat throw and it opens up the slant.

We run sprint right option on the Boldin 3rd quarter TD....that needs to be our staple redzone (especially inside the 5 yard line) play.

I would have played for the 1 yard as well. Then you get three cracks from the 3 yard line. They did it right on the TD that gave them the lead. Run it behind Boone/Staley. Hyde almost always falls forward. That was very frustrating at the time to have to kick a FG after facing 3rd & 1.

It's a staple play for us, I just didn't like it there on 3rd & 1. Basically all or nothing with that call. Would have rather prioritized getting the 1st down, then pull out the sprint right option with a fresh set of downs.

Yup. We've scored many TDs with that playcall, I just didn't like it there given the situation.

I thought the FB slide was the play you didn't like....that was the play that got blown up. Personally I think our 5 yard and in plays (especially with this OL) need to get kap on the move and out of the pocket with a pass/run option. Sprint option is perfect and doesn't require a play fake. we do run it a lot, but I'd run it even more and I think our success in the red zone starts to improve.

Yeah the two red zone passing TDs were done well. That sprint right to Boldin with a pick set, and the little double move by Celek made for some easy throws by Kap. This play here (3rd & 1) required so much to go correctly. And Boldin having to run clear across the field. Like Sofa mentioned, teams are overplaying this misdirection rollout right.

I think why bill loved sprint option so much was it had pretty predictable outcomes. Usually the flat is reasonably wide open due to the rub action and if it's not the QB can run or just throw it away. Well,if your a super stud you hold the ball for 6 seconds with "too tall" bearing down on you and throw a pass to the 2nd options that's really only been the second option that one iconic time on basically a scramble drill

That's correct, typo on my part. I was talking about the FB slide in that situation. I like getting Kap on the move, he's more comfortable in that situation, that's why the coaches continue to call it. Would also like to see them experiment with spreading the field down the RZ sometimes. Create some space, might even make it easier for Hyde. Spread the defense thin and let him barrel through tacklers.
