What to do with Jarryd Hayne?

See Glen Coffee, Korey Sheets and Clayton Thomas.

I'm confused. Over in the Purcell thread, guys are saying he tore it up in preseason so he should get a shot. It seems that the same argument used for one player is used against another, depending on who that player is. So which one is it?

I'm not trying to s**t stir or start a fire, it's just hard to follow the reasoning when there seems to be inconsistency in the application.

Everyone has there own opinions and there are examples for both sides. Best everyone just agree to disagree and look at potential and see what their opinion is.... my opinion anyway

I get the opinion bit, don't worry. I'm just seeing if we can work out what the real go is with the different arguments. There must be a pattern of preseason stars being busts in the real deal for people to say preseason means s**t. But, if that opinion is based on fewer examples and there's actually a greater proportion who do well in preseason and then go on to star or at least be decent, reliable performers in the NFL, then I'd say the logic is flawed. If more are busts than work out well, then I'd say the logic is sound.

There may be no immediate answer to that question, I just get inquisitive when I see the same argument used to substantiate different things.

not every RB hits a big run each time they get the ball. At least with him, you know he will fall forward.

get his Damn Auss on the damn field!!!

Yeah, Hayne should watch tapes of Marshawn Lynch from the last game. You can't even see the ball the way he wraps it up with both arms.

lets take a look at all those *fumbles* though. I don't think he has fumbled it running the as a RB. And almost all of them were mental mistakes... like when he thought he was in the clear on his punt return 2 games ago.

he usually holds the ball correctly when running with it in the trenches.

if anyone has video or gifs of all his fumbles we might get a better idea.

the ones I remember, he can definitely learn from...like not underestimating the speed of defenders behind you.
Give him a chance, especially in a game that's out of reach. Why not spell Hyde who has been banged up and see what we have in Hayne? Or try getting him in a series or two earlier? We have nothing to lose at this point. He has high potential upside, we need talent right now, and the season is going nowhere. Play Hayne, Armstead, etc

I think he needs to be given a chance and not just 1 or 2 plays

Yeah for sure, and an improvement in team cohesion would help too. That one in bold, he cut back across field to where the space was but a teammate got right in his way, which slowed him down for a second and he got hit from behind. I'm not saying it's the other guys fault he fumbled, the onus is 100% on the ball carrier to secure the pill, but s**t like that is a great example of what's been going on with the team each week. We're our own worst enemy in too many instances.

give him a large body of work the rest of the year, if he can not cut it, then dump him

The way I see it, the coaches are in survival mode now. They realise their jobs are on the line.
They won't look to start and blood the rookies now. Or rest banged up guys like Hyde for the long term of the team. Most see that this season is gone and they need to look forward and see what's best for the team the next few years. But the coaches won't as they know that will send them out the door if they don't get immediate results.
If these coaches had form on the board that would buy them time. But they don't.

Well, if he were guaranteed a season on the active roster regardless of errors while he learns, I'm sure he'd be happy. It might not be good for his career or for the team though.

Unless Tomsula has been talking out of his arse the whole time, he'll put the players welfare ahead of his own.

Right, he's not a fumbler in that he has bad hands. He's not dropping any passes, or catchable punts. He's making some judgement errors which is totally expected of someone who is a complete rookie. Twice trying to catch punts that should have been left alone. Once getting the ball stripped. I understand that turnovers are bad - although only one has resulted in a turnover so far - but I think he needs to be given more opportunities, not less. He seems to be learning from his mistakes, he hasn't made the same one twice so far, they've been unique situations. He has a winner mentality and he's aggressive, not like the coaches who seem to give up hope last game. He's dedicated and hungry and doesn't give away penalties. The crowd likes watching him. I know he's not going to save the team with all the other problems going on right now, but I am disappointed with how little he's been used and the way they've used him. I've got no problem benching him for the last game, but I think he can help make a positive difference this year if only they would use him. Hyde should be sitting out and healing his foot, it's ridiculous.
He is under contract and needs practice, keep him inactive the rest of the season, hope he progresses during practice and let him compete for a roster spot in the offseason.
