Here's the Gurly TD.

Power Right versus nickel package. About as basic a run play as it gets. The way it's drawn up, the backside guard pulls and leads through the C gap (off right tackle). Any LB/safety can read this at the snap and immediately flow to the point of attack. This is actually what dooms the defense - well that, and Tank.
Players to watch are the LG (71), RT (79), Tank, and Bow. I want to say Tank and Dial are two gapping only because Dial doesn't look to penetrate at the snap.

At the snap, Tank takes a step to his right, and for no known reason collapses like a cheap lawn chair. He was supposed to stay upright to take on the RG and RT (79). Because Tank goes down so easily, this frees up the RT to easily get to the second level. This greatly affects Bow's ability to flow to the point of attack.

79 gets to the second level and puts a hat on Bow. At this point the defenders know the play and are flying to the point of attack. Here comes Bow and Tartt to the playside C gap. Hodges (51) steps up (kind of) to take on the lead blocker (the pulling guard) - Hodges executes his assignment on this play.

Because the RT 79 is easily able to get to Bow, this creates another opening for Gurly to attack. Now, it looks as though Bow attacked the incorrect shoulder of the RT. Tartt looks like he took a bad angle. Bow and Tartt diagnose this play correctly (Power, C gap). But Gurly has a different gap available to him due to Tank being on the ground, and takes it.

Great vision and explosiveness from Gurly. It's going to suck having him in the division for the foreseeable future. Had Tank been able to take on two blockers, then there is no new opening for Gurly and he has to take the C gap. Bow and Tartt were flowing there. Tartt thought he had the play sniffed out, but ends up slipping because Gurly takes a different gap.

To me it looked like Carradine was pushing inside and Bowman was coming to fill the hole over RG but was trapped too far outside right next to Hodges. Nice blocking by St.Louis but the ILBs blew the play, not the DL...unless it was a mistake to take that inside skip. But it was so quickly done and Bowman was already moving in toward the hole. May have Bowman and Hodges mixed up on this but don't think so.

To me, it almost looks like Tank slips and his shoes didn't bite at all.

He takes that sidestep right at the snap though and gets locked inside. Can't know who is most at fault but the fact that the two ILBs wound up right next to each other leads me to believe they misjudged the play. Not really criticizing as bad plays happen, but some want to blame Tartt for taking a bad angle. Guess that's OK but he probably didn't expect Gurley to come through the line untouched at full speed!

Edit: As a offensive lineman I loved seeing a defensive lineman take a side step! It gave me a bit more time to set up my block and figure out which way I would be able to open the hole.

St. Louis turf took out 2 of our RB, it almost took out Tank too.

Just heard Bush will likely have a suit against the stadium for his injury. The cement had already been reported as dangerous and had caused injuries in the past. Can't believe a game with this much money has cement on the sidelines! We were away of that in the 70s for HS games! Got rid of any obstacle near the sidelines that was a hard substance. Until then we had wooden yard markers every ten yards. Kid ruined a knee on one and there were major changes.

yes I just didn't like that Bow ended up to me on the wrong shoulder and ends up past Hodges. To me that was the second error after Tank getting blown up. Then Tarrt was too aggressive coming down hill and Reid was just to slow reacting. Also Brooks seemed to read run but took an outside attack.

Almost seems as if Bow saw Tank get leverage into Bows gap so he tried jump into Tanks lane assuming the RB would take that hole. The combo block by the Gaurd and to the second level is what blew this play open and allowed Gurley to zigzag through both of their missed gaps.

Tank is at the biggest fault because it almost appeared as if he was bearing to his right from the start.

Good clips Thl...I see what you mean upon further review. Odd missed steps by both Tank (falling?) and then Bowman going too far past the hole. Wonder if there is a little miscommunication with Hodges as he's pretty unfamiliar with the D?
Biggest culprits on the run to be seem to be:

1. Tank getting pancaked.
2. Reid bad angle.
3. Tartt bad angle, overpursuit.

This looks like both DTs pinched inside and the olb/de go out
So the ILB should fill in
It does look like Bowman over commit, which in turn gift wrapped Gurly a big run.
I'm guessing Tartt was crashing into the hole in between the tackle and guard to meet Gurly straight on. If Bowman doesn't over commit, and keeps his right arm free, he could of forced Gurly to run in between the guard and tackle and Tartt would of been in position.
But s**t happens

OK but you let Bowman off the hook! LOL! He gets the future Hall of Fame discount!

I think it's 100% Baalke's Fault

J/k....I just can't seem to keep myself out of the baalke threads today.

After the defense forces a Rams 3 & out. This is the next drive.

After a -2 yard run by Gaskins, the 49ers execute a nice middle screen pass that Davis took for 11 yards. Very clean looking screen pass with 2 OL out in front blocking and everything.

Another manageable 3rd down. RB circle route versus Cover1 blitz. Same deal as the play above. Bush's circle route designed to attack the middle of the field, which is open in Cover 1 blitz.

At this point, it should be clear to Kap that the middle of the field (underneath level) is wide open. Does Kap understand that there is a route about to go to the middle of the field? If so, he needs to start his throwing motion now as Bush digs his heel in the grass to break towards the middle.

This is a split second later and Kap still has not started his throwing motion. Now the rush is on him and he will eventually make an off balance throw that sails over Bush's head.

There was an illegal formation penalty on the offense on this play so it would not have counted anyway, but when looking at Kap's execution on this play, it is a fail. Have some anticipation. Lob it to the open area and put the responsibility on Bush to get there. Punt.

2011 alex smith would of had a great time if he ever saw v.davis right in front of his eyes in man coverage. Gregg williams knows something about that
