How did he know not to stay with White? Was he reading Ryan?

DJs assignment is deep 1/3 so it would be a mistake to even think about staying close to Roddy. What I like is he identified where Julio was and was very wary of what Julio was doing. That allowed DJ to get a good break on the throw. You can see from the endzone view that DJ doesn't bail straight back, he starts to curve towards Julio while watching Ryan.

Oh ok, cause he knows he has Reid to rotate out to White if need to and he can adjust back to White to at least make the tackle if White some how gets past Reid....is that correct?

Yes. Anything short range is in Reid's curl/flat zone, so it's not DJs responsibility. But it's still worth mentioning that DJ never took a step towards Roddy because sometimes a CB will do that when they see the WR in front of them run a short hitch.

So their roll essentially switched. Johnson pretty much being the safety. Makes sense that Mangini let Johnson do that since he does have some experience at safety.

Nifty that the defense gave Ryan the initial look like Julio is open, but hiding the fact that he's actually covered by CB/S.

He practically started walking just before the ball even got to Jones. That's uncalled for and STUPID. What if Johnson and Tartt deflect it? Reid would have been out of position for an INT.

Not entirely. Reid comes down and Tartt and Johnson each share a piece of what Reid left.

Reid has been disappointing. Even last year. Tartt and maybe even Ward would be nice.

He just doesn't seem to be in it. The Ward/Tartt combination would be deadly in a Cover 3. Either one can rotate down, cover the underneath or make a solid tackle on a RB.

Earl Thomas is 5/10 and Ward is 5'11".

Still think if Mangini makes this switch, our defense would be lock down.

I think he slows down because he sees Tartt running full speed and about to cause a major collision.

Dude wanted no part of that but he still needs to hustle and position himself for a possible tipped ball INT. The ball did deflect but straight down to the left. Bowman knows what happens when you keep your hustle to the ball. That's why better defenses get more INT's. Reid gave up on that play before it was over. Him and Wilhoite are our weakest links on defense.
thl, could you tell me who the remaining two defenders are on that DJ vs. Julio play?
we got tarrt and DJ deep and reid & hodges flat and hook, respectively. who is responsible for the far deep third? who are the guys underneath over there?
I gotta say, i'm a big fan of this thread, love seeing the ins and outs of the plays we run.

Gives us more insight. Love it!

Keep it up!

I don't see it that way. You're right that Reid isn't a killer like Goldson was but Goldson would have ran full speed for Julio and knocked Tartt out in the process. He's done that before (IIRC he knocked out T.Brown against the Saints or Giants in the playoffs... don't remember which). Notice that Tartt pulls up at the end too as to avoid the big collision.

I'm not a fan of how Reid has been playing but I'm fine with him hanging back a bit considering that two niners were already there on time and the way Tartt likes to throw his body around.

I don't care if he's a hitter. I think he lacks the proper ball skills we need from that position if this defense wants to be shutout.

Far deep 1/3 is Cromartie
Far side Curl/flat is Lemonier
Far side Hook is Bow
(That's basically from the top down on the screen)
