Here's a quick read throw Gabbert made and an easy way to beat Cover3.

All four routes will flood the underneath zones for a horizontal stretch. Same idea as All Curls concept. 3 step timing and the ball must come out or else the Curl routes die standing still, the quick Outs run out of bounds.

Blue deep defenders are irrelevant because they are playing soft over the top. Gabbert reads the cushion being given to Torrey. Shotgun snap + 1 step.

Dropped by Torrey.

This play was on the FG drive. After a Pears holding call.
Texas concept vs Fire zone blitz

MLB (blue) gains a lot of depth. Target the circle route.

Beating the blitz with 5 routes instead of additional pass protection is WCO-like. +12 yards

This is on the 2nd TD drive.
4 Verticals vs Cover3

If the 4 verticals are defended well, that means there's some room underneath for the circle route.

Throwing before the RB cuts. Throw was a bit high.

Easy +7.

We're going to run an out/in post with Celek and a snag route with Draugh(sucker concept). While the backside we run a scissors/smash concept. Note the safety to the 3 receiver side. This reveals that it's going to be cover 2, not cover 3. Against cover 3 you're going to look for the other side, cover 2 you'll look for the post.

At the snap, Gabbert, again, does a good job of keeping his head in the middle of the field. This holds the LB covering the middle. You see the outside defender pressing up on the "snag" route from the RB - this is the sucker concept, the key read is on that defender, if he trails back with the TE you hit the snag, if he comes up, you look to the post or DIG.

I like the out/in post(it escapes me what the route is called, for some reason....)because it causes the safety to turn his hips. You see how the LB in the middle has turned towards teh 3 receiver side because Gabbert has kept his head down the middle of the field(I'm sure his eyes are on that outside LB though).
(Pics snipped)
Gabbert delivers the ball into a small window - though the window is only there because he did some other things right.

you see that while he was in his motion, he had a defender bearing down on him. That's tough to stand in there to make this throw with a defender in your face.

You see he gets hit right after he throws the ball.

Those two circle routes earlier in the game to Draughn helped the RB snag route here attract the attention of the underneath defender.
Successful recognition and execution set up more plays to be successful....

Go figure

We might have a qb that knows how to take what the defense gives you on a somewhat consistent basis in Gabbert

Looks to me, we were using more older school WCO stuff. It looks like the HB route which was set up by the earlier Texas/HB curl routes is what we use to call HB arrow plays. Here's an example from 1994:

In this example it was a FB but it goes the same for HBs....it's basically a whip route from the backfield.

Here is s gif from '89....Joe goes to the TE, but you can see Rathman do the same thing Draughn did on Sunday.

I think us playing that defensive system against Atlanta (and winning) is a great confidence boost for us, and I think should be a really nice tune-up for Seattle. If we prepare hard, we have an even better shot to beat them. Gosh it would feel so amazing to beat Seattle in their house, and with Gabbert.

Gabbert has 2 weeks to make even quicker decisions without meltdowns against Seattle. He's not completely back into the NFL until he can play decent against one of the better defense in the NFL without wilting.

That would pretty awesome! However I'll be pretty content if the Niners can stay competitive and move the ball around. Watching Kap struggle mightily in Seattle these last few years has been pretty rough.

I think the defense will be alright as long as they can slow down Marshawn Lynch. They'll give up a few big plays, they just need to limit the damage done after those.
messed up on the quote...

Kap would've taken a sack no doubt, lol

This was the play I was referring to when I mentioned that Gabs stood in and delivered the ball to the HB under severe pressure. He has no room to step up in the pocket and has to throw the ball off his back foot - but the ball comes out super quick. It's less than 1.5 seconds. Think of the Rams game - we had a very similar play where Kaep held the ball longer and threw it out of reach for Bush. http://www.49erswebzone.com/forum/niners/183747-week-st-louis-rams-coaches-film-analysis/page7/
