Absolutely. Bring in Alex Mack at center, insert Daniel Kilgore at RG. The draft is deep at tackle, so we can let a rookie (not a first rounder), Anthony Davis, and Trenton Brown battle for the right tackle position. That would leave Andrew Tiller, Brandon Thomas, and maybe another veteran guard that we sign in free agency battle for the LG position. Or we could sign Alex Boone. I'm thinking at worse, that should give us a middle of the pack O-line.

I would love Alex Mack but if he opts out of his contract its to go to a winner and we ain't that.

Finally someone is on my side here lol

Meh, people say the same stuff every year, bad teams still sign top free agents every year ....and you know why, its usually the bad teams that have the cap space to spend, not the top contenders. In 2012 and 2013 this team didn't have jack crap for cap space. This isn't baseball where the top teams can spend endlessly, good players frequently sign with bad teams because the money is right.

By that same logic, Justin Smith would never have signed here. They may have to overpay somewhat but if they value a guy enough, they'll pay to get him.

Stopped reading after this. This is as bad as Jeff Geoff.

Mack has wanted out of Cleveland for years and has made his feelings quite well known.

He's a California guy that went to Cal, if the 49ers make him a good offer I'm willing to bet that he would sign, its not like there will be a ton of top teams flush with cash to throw around. Most of the teams that pursue him will be those that are struggling as well.

Signing an expensive interior lineman doesn't seem to fit Baalke's MO.

This. We are not signing any great FA linemen. Might be able to sign a second tier interior OL in FA. Shouldn't be hard to do better than Devey, Pears, and Martin. But there's a very good chance that we will loose Alex Boone. So anything happening in FA is likely to be a wash.

Only chance to improve this OL for next season is to spend a 1st or 2nd round draft pick on an OT, cross our fingers that Anthony Davis ends his premature retirement, sign a decent FA center, and pray for Brandon Thomas/Trent Brown/Ian Silberman to develop into serviceable players.

Problem with that logic is, Justin Smith was a free agent looking for a big payday. Alex Mack is allready making big money, he's just able to opt out so he can playfor someone competitive for the same price or more. And spending over 8 mil a year on center is a waste Imo. I'd much prefer a comparable center like Ben Jones who could be almost half the cost and is only 26 opposed 30 years old.

Maraathe wouldn't allow that. He's still doing the negotiating. Nothing has changed in the FO.
We need to hit on at least two linemen in the draft and still pickup a FA or two.
This is my preferred course of action, lineman around the league don't develop as fast as they used to and we can't back ourselves into a corner with our first round pick.

marathe did contracts in the nolan era too, they signed clements/justin, etc. just last offseason he let baalke pay torrey $8 million per.

Team definitely can afford two upper tier free agents on the oline at $8-10 million per, or one upper tier guy and 2 middle tier guys. I'd like to spread out free agency dollars between offense and defense since it's clear we need help in a lot of different places.
I get the impression they are using analytics to put values on players because it's what they've said in the past. And PM is the analytic guy. He likely has final say on dollar value. If Baalke happens to bring someone in who they line up with then they sign. Just my opinion. There's a reason for all the friction and PM's name coming up constantly.

At the very least LT is still ok to good. Staley is not having a good season but it's hard to shine when when the other 4 play like poop. This is not bad because traditionally G, C's and RT aren't super expensive. I highly doubt Mack walks after his comments earlier this season. Wisniewski of the Jags is a FA and he was the best C FA this last offseason and signed a 1yr deal for 2.5 mil. He would be my no 1 target on the line. The two best RT's this upcoming FA is probably Andre Smith and Bobby Massie. They're pretty good not elite though so 5-6 mil wouldn't be too bad for them. Hope that Boone resigns and is somewhere back to his usual self and you've only got one guard spot to deal with.

Alex Mack is great, but I would rather take Mitchell Schwartz over him.
