That is how how rebuilding goes. You want the team moving in the right direction, to see young players stepping up so you can go "Okay x and y and b are taken care of on the roster, now we need to address d, c and s."

Anyone expecting playoffs only has themselves to blame for expectations that are utterly off base.

Even if you are a homer Denver fan, just reading that

Yes, Denver's quarterback situation is worse than the 49ers. Kap and gabbert are a lot better than butt fumble and a guy that finished his last year in college with what 10 ints and 7 tds. I think the Chiefs and raiders are going to battle for the division sad to say. Denver IMO would of won the division if they had kap at qb bc he is better than the s**t on their team now.

I agree, I think it's between the Chiefs and Raiders as well. It's going to be interesting in that division. Denvers defense will have them competing but I think Kc and the raider offense will be the difference.

Hope Blaine goes 6 for 6 with 7 TDs or this place will be unbearable.

Even if he does, it won't be enough. If the second teamers don't do the same, lol. Look at what was written after we scored a 1st qtr TD for the first time in forever, and rolled up 300 yards in the first half of the preseason opener ... You would think the world ended.

If it ain't Kaep out there, it ain't enough.

#32...and it was because three of their great defensive players weren't there...yet they blitzed just about every down...and we were missing a top 5 NT, had Cromartie at S for a pro bowl S in Reid and didn't even have our camp star in AA out there...held their $19M QB to 27 yards.

Does Sanchez have a died arm?
Did a backup blow an ACL?
Do they have a R who can run but not throw?
Did they just sign a QB who sucks?

Is having a fatigued arm in the second week of the preseason really something to complain about? Reports are that Kap is on track to return next week. This same Kap was Denver's first choice to lead their team this year. I'm not saying our QB situation is ideal, but Denver's is clearly worse.

Yes it is. They said he was 100%. He practiced for a few days. Then his arm got tired. I thought he don't get tired?

Players get injured. It's not uncommon in contact sports. His injury is insignificant.

Well to that I say duh. Not even the point. Don't say he's 100 then say he's not ready 3 days later. Maybe they should catch a clue?

They are hiding something like always.

Okay maybe I'm missing the point. When did they say he was 100% after he injured his shoulder? I remember there being a practice he was seen stretching his arm, then a practice he performed poorly (throwing balls all over the place), then his "planned" off day, then "he has dead arm and needs more time".

They said he was ready to go. 100% cleared to practice. He threw for 2 days. On the 3rd day of practice he was on the field for 15 min with the trainer stretching out his arm. Chips asked him what the deal was. He said he was fine. Then the practice at Kezar was the last time he threw. That's when he said I Do Get Tired.

Stop hyping up a QB competition when Kap isn't even ready to play in a game per Trent.

We have Blaine who's looked like crap.
Driskel who looked like crap.
Ponder who is crap.
Kap who's not ready to do crap.

That's too much crap.

Huh? He was 100% and cleared to practice at the start of camp. The practice he was seen stretching his throwing shoulder was the one that proceeded the Kesar stadium practice. He had been practicing for over a week up to that point. So, if I understand your argument, you think the trainers lied about Kap being 100% at the start of camp and that his fatigued arm condition happened before camp started?

No. That's not the timeline of what was reported by the practices on 49ers.com. He was seen with the training staff in the 3rd full padded practice. Then he went back out to practice again. Then shut him down after teh Kazar practice. Then he was seen with trainers again. Then all the dead arm talk.

Either way the point still stands that it is an issue to be worried about. Esp. when he's making like $12m to sit around and be tired.

Lets pretend there isn't any structural damage in kaps arm. Kap barely started to lightly throw yesterday according to beat writers. He physically won't be ready in two weeks to start. It's very possible kap needs to slowly build his arm back like it was two months ago. I don't think kap will be physically available for a few weeks.

He was zipping balls yesterday. He should already be physically able to get reps in but not a lot of reps in. He will be practicing all next week. If they aren't lying and it's only a dead arm, he should be just fine.

He did take a step back but I think this is the best thing that could happen to a QB who heavily relies on his physical ability and is now forced to take more mental reps and get entrenched in the mental aspect of being a professional. It worked well for him a few weeks ago where the coaches were impressed at how quickly he was able to apply his mental reps.

Let's stop making excuses for the kid. I think this last year and this TC is the best thing that could have happened to him. His interviews are getting more to the normal side as well. Seems like a very nice guy with the usual social awkwardness. Would be great to see him become great and just be himself.

Only if Baalke doesn't eff it up.

hes physically able now i just think hes not playing because he didnt practice for the week which is common

but the conspiracy theorist in me says team wants kap to start allowing gabbert to play texans and broncos arguably two top D and in case of broncos they have best D in nfl and allow kap to play against GB who is a bit softer

Were you expecting 12-4?

This was going to be a long year no matter what. They could be substantially improved and still only win 5 or 6 games. That is how rebuilding works.

What I'm looking for is positive signs from younger players, the core of the next 49ers playoff team. They look to be moving in the right direction with a real NFL coaching staff but they still need to address some areas. You werent going to do all of that in a single offseason.

He just wants to b***h and moan...what else is new?

agree

If Trent says he's not ready for a game now he won't be in 2 weeks. With zero game reps he's not going to be the starter in week 1. So there really is no QB competition.

All aboard the Blaine train of crapachoochoo.

Seeing how wide open the QB option was after our RB gashed the HOU defense, I immediately wondered if that was Kap, it would have been a TD.

That is the aspect where Kap crushes it compared to Gabbert. Yes, passing must be there but man, if our OL comes through and Hyde doesn't get hurt, we can go a lot farther with Kap than we can with Gabs...unless Gabbert finally finds his chi and starts getting comfortable.

I do want to add that this is what we did to MIN in game 1 last season and then the next week, defenses immediately played the read/option and forced us to throw jumping anything Kap looked at. That is my main concern.

i think they both have there advantages

without a doubt kap in will lead to more explosive plays but i have more faith in gabbeert to run this offennse more consistantly

unless kap really really improved in his areas of weakness i think if kap is in we will see a lot more drives to nowhere and 3 and out mixed with some wow and great plays
Oh the hypotheticals...

If...
When...

I had high hopes for the so-called QB competition.

This crap is depressing...

Agree. Gabbert can have the ability to pick apart a defense and demoralizing them. Kap won't necessarily demoralize a defense because his success has mainly been through scheme and defenses know what to do but they kept making small mental mistakes against him.
If there is one thing that has NFL teams nervous about Blaine Gabbert, it's the offensive scheme he played in while at Missouri. Gabbert spent the majority of his college career in the shotgun with multiple wide receivers lined up on both sides of him. He almost played in a system that was comparable to what Mike Leach ran at Texas Tech where they would spread you out with that same sort of shotgun look.

This was from a pre-draft right up of Gabbert. Doesn't sound much different from what Chip wants to do in his offense with 5 out on routes. Gabbert doesn't have any major problem transitioning into a pocket passer. Most of the NFL offense doing less of that anyways. I think Gabbbert is a perfect fit for ALL of what Chip likes to do in his offense in regard to passing and running with his qb. Gabbert with a 4.62 speed is plenty.

I think with all of Chip's qb, another question would be... is he durable and can take a hit. Which Kelly also alluded to with subtlety.
