OL:
Tempo: Rams had issues with the tempo offense right from the start. Negated the speed and quickness of the Rams DL.
Overall: It's only one game. 1st game gives more time to prepare so this isn't an excuse for the Rams because they had plenty of time to prepare for the Chip Kelly offense. So did the 49ers. But the 49ers had an impressive victory. They did that last year but there's some good things to build on.
Gabberts: Very erratic. Made 2 big time throws in the 4th. He missed a lot. He still plays too fast. Missed Kearly on that deep route because he rushes himself. He doesn't set his feet due to this. He needs to be better with ball placement. Main point is that he rushes himself.
Chip Kelly offense: Article about how simplistic it is and never evolving (that one long one that was posted here last week) - depends on point of view. Some great running games were very simplistic (Joe Gibbs)...same plays out of different looks. Same with Greg Roman. #1 element in Chip's offense is tempo. Not a lot of concepts but you can't have those if you play fast. Everything has pros and cons. Tends to agree that the offense won't work in the long run. But, he doesn't have enough talent at WR to give it a fair assessment. Put Aaron Rodgers and Adrian Peterson in there, then it will most likely work.

Interesting how KNBR hasn't posted the Chip Kelly interview with Kelly and Murph getting into it a little.
I pretty much agree with all of this. Thanks for posting this!

I've noted his poor footwork last year and it lingered into the pre season and now we're seeing it cost him in game 1. Had he set his feet properly and not angle the tip of the ball down (e.g. when it nose dives on him), he would have had an outstanding night despite not always being on the same page with a couple receivers (understandable).
To me, this is a clear indication of a QB who's been massively abused coming in young to the league. The bottom line is, he doesn't trust his OL yet and he's learned some very poor habits b/c of the pressure he's faced to start his career.
Like Steve Young said, he's got everything you want in a QB...the arm, the athleticism, the ability to read and process defenses pre and post snap, the fire/drive, work ethic, size/measureables, arm strength, range of throws, intangible leadership, etc. BUT, his bad habits are having a ripple effect on his whole game:
QB PTSD =
Poor Mechanics =
Ultra Conservative/Poor Production (at times/inconsistent).
The good news is that his brain is sharp. Kelly can instill more and more confidence in him. When they BOTH watch the Rams tape, they are going to realize, our OL absolutely dominated one of the very best front 7's in football. And therefore, it should only get easier or stay the same going forward. Is the front 7 better in Carolina and Seattle...doubt it with key FA losses, age and wear and tear.
Now, Kelly can start calling some more dynamic play calling, be less conservative and start calling some deep vertical shots with Torrey outside and Kerly down the middle and using McDonald over Celek in the passing game.
Kelly's next step is to help get Gabbert involved in the quick easy passing game early in games as he has a tendency to start out jacked up.
Finally, he's GOT to drill it into Gabbert's head that he just needs to take a deep breath, trust his OL, set his feet, trust his eyes/brain and just fire away. He's got to move the internal clock from sub-2 seconds to 2.5-3.0. And that doesn't happen overnight.
This is the growth and development you'll see between a HC and his QB. And this will be a good game to see if they worked on these things and learned from the Rams game. It'll be something to watch as the season progresses as well.
But make no mistake about it...it starts with Kelly here and this is why Baalke brought in an offensive mind. He and his staff have the tools to work with here but need to refine and evolve/develop them fully to have a good year.
