Greg Cosell is Howard Cosell's nephew, so his mission must be to "tell it like it is". Joking aside I like Cosell because he does not get into the he said, she said, it's strictly what is seen on the tape. He never berates a player but does gives his analysis on performance issues.

The film is what matters and that is why the analysis by Cosell cuts through all the statistical BS. Gabbert was able to run against a defense that wasn't expecting him to run. He struggled passing the ball and he struggled with his accuracy, as he's done throughout his entire career. Teams will scheme to take away his running lanes as they did with Kaepernick, at which point he'll have to prove that he can make consistently accurate passes.
So yeah, hold on tightly to those QBR numbers, that and $2.00 will buy you some gas station coffee to warm you up when Gabbert's many flaws catch up with him just like they did with Kaepernick.

Fitz and Brooks and Gary and Larry are ok. Murph and Mac just goof around too much. Their sports knowledge is pretty low.Originally posted by Joecool:Originally posted by Phoenix49ers:Originally posted by Hoovtrain:Lol that's classic .
Why do they have such dicks on the media in the Bay Area? Out here you turn on the radio and a quarter of the lineup of the main sports talk radio station's hosts are former Cardinals players and thus very deferential to the team. The other shows will rip teams but they generally tend to be pretty low-key about it.
They mainly only rip the 49ers. There's something there with York/Baalke and the Bay Area Media.

But Gabbert did face a good defense.

I'm a little confused about the 3rd Qtr, which is blamed on Gab's poor play, two passes in particular. What I saw was some exceptionally crappy play calls by our HC/OC. Chip went full turtle once we had that two TD lead. It was his play calls on 3rd down that were the problem, not Gab. Both passes , one in each series on 3rd down were passes behind the LOS, and both were duds. The D was all over them. Pure conservative,...and that guys , was our HC/OC...not our QB. Gab does NOT call the plays, chip does.
It was patently obvious, two runs and a behind LOS pass on 3rd down, in two consecutive series. It was like, "WTF is going on." Actually NC commented on it at the time. Guys, that was Chip, NOT Blaine.
Chip was going Harbaw, all the way. We're ahead so don't rock the boat. Take the win....and of course we had two rapid fire 3 and outs. It was obvious what Chip was doing. The next series, incidentally, he returned to chip ball and called a good game there on out. But let's get the blame affixed to whom it belongs...and it wasn't our QB.
The other item was also about Blaine, and how way off target he was. Ok he was 22/35. But, he also had two ugly drops by Torrey, I by McD, and two by Celek. Then Hyde had another. Add those up and Blaine should have had 28 / 35. And that means , despite the cases noted above where his footwork was less than desirable, the guy actually had 28 of his 35 passes on the money...so his completion % actual was 62%...not bad . But with the 6 obvious drops, his completion % was 80%. Now you all can complain about his footwork all day long about his 7 bad misses. But you all are missing the fact he was on target 80% of the time.
Here's what else I saw in our QB who really got lambasted by the sports press, but in fact, Blaine had a really good game. Blaine makes it look easy. He isn't rushed, he is cool under fire, and he had lots of time. What many folks missed is he looks so laid back that when he made a bad throw off his back foot, or off happy feet, it was obvious. The rest of the time, his mechanics were pretty darn good, and by rights he should have had an 80% completion rate. Go back and look at Torrey's two drops. And Celeks two, Hydes one and McD's one. They are right on the money and all were perfectly on target. That was on the receivers, not the QB. As far as Blaine not having a good game....I would ask...what part of the 80% on the money passes did you not like. Sure I saw the footwork and it needs to improve. But jeez ,guys, why didn't anyone else see the great game Blaine had?
My guess is that of his 7 bad passes, they were way off Mark. And also, two of those passes were crappy calls on those two back to back 3 and out series. Go back and look at those two 3 and outs on 3rd down. CHIP called those plays, not Blaine. And chip was locked into the old Harbaw method of "well,we're up,and we are going conservative." And that is exactly what chip started out with in third Qtr...sitting on a lead and playing conservatively. He woke up again, right after the second rapid 3 and outs, and returned to his playcalling the rest of the game. But don't hang those two 3rd down passes on Blaine. That was 100% chip.
I think a lot of folks were quick to criticize but missed the big picture on Blaine. He did well...really well. When his footwork was funky , he looked bad and that is what folks focused on, not the 80% of passes that were on the money. So sure, work on the footwork. But how about giving him credit where credit is due. He played a very good game...7 pass plays wiht ugly footwork notwithstanding.
Also, no need to mention the 4 or 5 3rd and long scrambles Blaine made for 1st downs. Nobody commented on that either. He surveyed the field, took 3 looks and nobody was open, but the middle of the field was. So add that in to his 80% on target passes and I amazed this wasn't part of the conversation. All I have seen is negative comments about his footworks which granted, needs work. But to not give the guy credit for managing a great game, nor his on Mark passing %....well, that smacks a bit of focusing on the negative and disregarding the positive.
Unh...we did win Monday nite, didn't we? And please don't tell me it was a sloppy win. It was a fantastic win, due to a massively overpowering OL, RBs, Kerley, our entire D, and oh yeah, our QB.

Exactly. It is the same issue across the board with each of these guys (TK, Ratto, KNBR etc) as it pertains to York/Baalke. They all absolutely despise each other and I think it stems from York/Baalke refusing to grant interviews with the local media and instead leaking their stuff to national media. That is the local media narrative as evidenced by Rattos last column. He also insinuated Dilfer is Baalkes guy and what he says is fed to him by TB (I.e Kaep dividing the locker room )

There is this pervasiveness between writers like Kawakami, Cohn, Killion, Ratto, etc. that feel the need to bash anything and everything 49ers all while gargling the SF Giants & Warriors' nut sacks

Except it really doesnt. Stats without context dont mean much. Film gives them context. Big Ben played an incredible game and made some incredible throws throughout his game. To say that Gabberts performance stacks up anywhere near that is silly.
Kaepernick even in 2014 was racking up high QBRs even though you could visibly see that he had regressed.
Case Keenum, he of many 3 and outs and 2 INTs had a higher QBR this week than Russell Wilson who led his team down the field to a win.
Its an interesting stat but doesnt tell you more than actual film does.

Lol seriously, if you can't see this from watching both games then I don't know what to tell you.
