During the offseason, I read an article that stated Chip ran very few, if any packaged plays in 2015. Here is a packaged play that got a good result. Good to see these are being called. Packaged plays are a great way to net some positive yards, but work much better versus zone coverage.
vs Tampa2
The only WR running a route is Kerley. Everyone else blocks for a running play because it's possible Gabbert chooses to hand off. The Rams show zone from how they are lined up and Gabbert knows Kerley can find a soft spot.

Only Kerley looking for a pass. Tiller is looking for a second level block and is ineligible downfield (no flag).

If Kerley doesn't slow down, would he have to dive?

They both trying to feel each other. This is definitely a timing route. If Kelly cuts at the 30, then he is hit on stride but since Gabbert has no experience with him, neither are sure to go in blind on this one.

if he didn't slow down, would be going back the other way ?

Hey THL. I was looking at this and was wondering if there is any chance kerley was suppsed to cut up to the post instead of going to the pylon. Gabbert threw the ball straight up the hashes. You would think he could hit that throw easily. It just looked off.

Chip broke down this concept on that video above. Here is actually how he drew it up:

Now it's a flipped formation(TE runs flat for us....it was a slot WR to the flat on they philly example)as to how we ran it on the play in question, but that second route from the top is called by him a deep drag route. From top to bottom of the screen it's Deep post, Deep Drag, flat route and fly. The back gets a fake and goes to the opposite flat.

I think he's running a route where he attacks the best spot to attack the seam between the two safeties. I don't think it's a 'throw it to a spot' kind of route. Kerley should have the freedom to adjust his route in a way that it best splits the safeties. Throw it to an open spot and put a little air under it for the WR to adjust is the best way to throw this.

Yeah. I agree.

On that video from his Philly days, Chip says against 2 safety looks they usually want to work the fly-flat side. Against single safety looks, they then attack the deep post and deep drag part. So Blaine kinda went against this. Also if you look, it looks like the flat comes open on the bottom of the screen.

This was kind of a slump buster play for the offense. After three consecutive '3 and outs' to start the 2nd half this is the fourth drive. 49ers face another 3rd down.

49ers call max protect with 7 blockers. The three routes are just leverage reads to beat man coverage. Notice the CB on Patton has aligned with inside position. Patton will stem his route inwards to set himself up for the deep Out.

Blitz picked up. Gabbert starts his windup just as Patton starts his break.

Nice route by patton there. Shook that dude. Looks like his route running has improved.
