Here's a counter to the Brown fail - it's why we're, "damned if we do, damned if we don't"
We're going to run another inside zone - geee....these look really familiar.....
you see Tiller help Brown out this time. There's a DB out of the screen, whose shadow you see, that Gabbert is reading on the run.
Tiller isn't able to get going quite fast enough when he disengages and tries to get to Lee.
Lee's able to get inside and blow up the play.
It's a gain of only 2 yards. It wasn't costly, because we were in 3rd and 2 but you see if he can get to that block, we could've ripped off a big gain. It's those kinds of blocks that separate us from teams that can be more explosive. On one of the next few plays Brown and Tiller get confused and blow a blocking assignment to give up a sack.

".... what's even more disconcerting about that is that we have spent 5 of the last 6 first round picks on defense already."
Love this thread, thanks again.

REMINDER TO EVERYONE IN THIS THREAD
Keep the discussion strictly about the Cowboys game and analysis of the play-by-play.
This thread will not devolve into yet another QB debate. There's a QB thread for that, go there if that's what you want to post.
Thanks.

His guy gets by him and is able to make the play for a 1 yard loss. It's kind hard to see - but Thl if you could help out with a GIF?? It's 13:53 3rd quarter. And was a rather pivotal play because we had just had a big chunk play. Then we had this for -1, then Hyde for only 2 yards. Then brown had a false start and we had 3rd and 14. Had we been able to capitalize on our chunks plays to open the half we could've grabbed momentum and started the 2nd half up 21-14 instead of 17-14.

If all the drafts are injured how is that going to happen?

Yeah, best ability is availability.

I wanted to at least touch on the INT. Torrey wasn't quite as wide open as it seemed - but that doesn't absolve Gabbert at all - it means all the more reason whey that throw has to be accurate, we don't have megatron out there.
We're going to take a shot at Smith with a "mills" concept. This is the same concept we scored a TD against the Panthers on where Gabs led Smith towards the middle of the field. The "mills" concept is an inside "dig" route with an outside "post". Not sure why he doesn't do it this time..... Dal is in man-cover 1 with a lurk over the middle.
We first run play action to bring up the LB's
The read is going to be on that single deep safety. If he drops on the post - throw the dig, if he attacks the dig, throw the post. He attacks the dig.
Torrey had a step(this is after the ball is thrown). At the time of the throw, he was about even with the DB - so he wasn't glaringly, hugely, grossly, wide open. But, it's T. Smith even with a DB. "If I'm even, I'm leavin'". Gabbert has to see the inside leverage - or really just know it's a post route.... and throw his guy towards the middle of the field. Just like he did against the Panthers. He doesn't though and it's behind and outside and the DB makes a really good adjustment to the ball in the air - it's why Smith looked grossly wide open. Either way - he was open and it was a bad pass - but here's why and how the whole thing happened.....

Here's the play where Tartt got flagged. It extended the drive and resulted in DAL's first TD. 49ers show blitz as they put 7 on the LoS. They will actually rush 4 (reds) while dropping the other 3 into underneath coverage (blues) to play Quarters on both sides of the field.
Dak takes the snap and looks hot read because he sees the edge rushers coming on the right side of the OL as the 49ers try to overload that side of the OL. 49ers pattern match well and every WR is accounted for including the 2 WRs running quick routes, which is where Dak is looking.
Dak is running around and still nothing has become open as the 49ers play coverage well.
I think this was a deserved penalty. Whistle or no whistle, can't try and headshot a QB like that. Foolish penalty when the prize (forced punt) was in the bag.

Hopefully Dorsey gets a crack at starting NT duties soon, although he hasn't exactly looked great either.
The loss of Bowman is insurmountable. The defense was struggling as is. Once Bowman went down, the floodgates completely busted open. He was the glue that barely held everything together. Dallas got everything they wanted on the ground and through the air once Bow went down. I don't see how this changes for the rest of the year.
Only thing to look forward to is the continued development of the young players. Buckner, Armstead, and Robinson have a lot of promise. Young vets like Reid, Lynch, Ward, and Dial really have to step up and become the leaders of this unit.
It really is...we lost cornerstones on defense right down the middle with Williams + Bowman + Ray-Ray. And it doesn't even include the fact that guys are already playing through injuries or not playing at all such as Tartt, Ward, Dorsey, Lynch, Redmond, Davis, Armstead, Buckner, etc. That's 11 players right there. And it's only going to get worse.
Yikes, when you list them all like that you really get a sense of how banged up the defense is. It's crazy. Been snakebit since 2013, can't wait for the year we have a healthy season for change.
4 games and now a short week. Get ready for more.

Here was another run where we got gashed - right after the INT. These plays are huge because we were still in the game. This is when good teams and good defenses will rise to the occasion and make a big stop. It was the mark of our team during our championship run - here....not so much.
here, Dal condenses the formation and are gonna run the ball. It's just another stretch run play. What's frustrating is that we have the numbers advantage. They have 8 blockers and we have 9 defenders. If you draw a line down the center, we have 3 defenders against 3 blockers on the right and 4 defenders against 4 blockers on the left. This means we should have our "mike" backer free to run around and make tackles.
Just think back to those plays I showed of Tiller and Brown, these are the same plays, essentially. Purcell doesn't take on the center - who is his man....
The RG is then able to get on Purcell and the center is on Bellore.
Purcell gets cut-blocked. Buckner was doing well - up until here. He tries to rip the G off him, but isn't successful and in doing so, gives up leverage and gets too high.
Because Purcell got cut, the center got on Bellore and Buckner lost leverage the RB has a HUGE cut-back lane.
You give any RB that kind of lane, he's gonna do well. Let alone Ezekial Elliot.....
Run of +26 and sets up Dal's FG to go up by 7 with 4 min to go.

So after the 49ers offense started to stall, Pinion shanks a punt and DAL gets the ball back near their own 40 yard line. 49ers played soft man coverage to keep everything in front of them and Dak shows good patience completing four passes on consecutive plays for 8, 7, 7, 7 yards. That's nearly 30 yards "free" and gets DAL into FG range - inexcusable. Eventually the 49ers buckle down and get into a 3rd & 6 situation.
49ers will again overload the right side of the OL to give the look of blitz, but they are actually coming with a standard 4 man rush, playing Cover3 with man coverage on the backside WR.
The fail of this play comes on the rush. Bethea sneaks in late, right before the snap, and will be the 4th rusher. The 4 rushers are the nose tackle, AA, Brooks, and Bethea.
The 49ers achieve their goal - get a 3v2 situation on the right side of the OL. AA, Bethea, and Brooks versus the RG/RT. What needs to happen now is AA and Brooks have proper spacing to give Bethea a nice lane to run through.
AA attacks the outside shoulder of the RG. This closes the lane for Bethea. AA needs to attack the inside shoulder (yellow). By hitting the wrong gap, the RT is able to block both Brooks and Bethea.
Meanwhile, Eli drops into coverage to his Hook zone. Instead of gaining some depth to keep things in front of him, he is oblivious to the drag route in his area (yellow).
Yellow pulls up and finds a soft spot. Gets the pass and converts the 3rd down. DAL eventually scores the tying TD with 16 seconds left in the half.
Defenders in zone coverage need to train their eyes to look around and be aware of their space. Where is the help? What routes are relevant to their assigned zone?

What is Sam's Hell is going on here? Wilhoite lined up as a SAM edge rusher, next to Robinson and Bethea...with only Bellore in the middle of the field? The alignment alone wipes out an entire side of defense.
