I don't see this as being the worst playoff loss in 49ers history, it anywhere near it. Lance out, Garoppolo out. Purdy out. Then Johnson out! The fact that they got as far as they did is quite remarkable. How many NFL teams get to the playoffs with their 3rd stringer?
There are several playoff games we should have won but didn't. They are the worst. When Purdy went down this one became unwinable. That is how important the quarterback is in today's NFL. I notice that there is a lot of blame going on round here. Pointless.
Good points all, and the only "worst" thing that happened is we all got cheated (football fans everywhere) from seeing a game between the two best teams in the NFL…certainly between the two most physical teams. It was set to be one of the best games all yr… it is remarkable that when one starter QB went down, we had a very good one ready to go. It is incredibly bad luck that Trey then went down 1 1/2 games later. Amazingly, our THIRD string QB comes in and plays like a seasoned vet. How many teams could have done that? Right…ZERO. So we did great in backing up the Qb slot, and hats off the the F.O for doing so.
But to lose Brock also? Good grief…just what kind of bad/awful/stinky/ horrid luck was that? Josh was just there to fill a slot in emergency…which we had. He was about what one would expect a journey man QB of 14 yrs would look like. So once that elbow of Brocks got hammered by Riddick and showed his forearm at 30 degrees to his upper arm, i knew immediately the game was over.
Altho this is horrible for us, imagine how Brock must feel. Four great yrs starting at a big 12 school, then with 9 games to go in our season starting for the 9ers? Life could not have been better. And then Riddick. It was all over in a brief second. My heart goes out to Brock and i wish him the best in his surgery. Whichever way it goes, i hope he returns to full function and that the docs at Kerlan-Jobe clinic in LA do their usual fantastic best. They are true wizards with joints and ligaments. As for the 49ers, the future is somewhat clouded by what they plan to do at QB. I guess we all just stay tuned and hope that Brock returns as good as he played pre-injury. Realistically, that is a lot to wish for.
