Personally I think the defense isn't designed right. Demeco''s leaving notwithstanding. Eagles defense is strong DLine strong DBs and mediocre LBs. I think thats how the 49er defense should be designed. You have a elite passer in Purdy. Augment that with an elite pass defense. If he gets ahead, he'll stay ahead with a ferocious pass rush and great secondary. Run defense is important, but look how the eagles offense basically played keep away from the 49ers and stopped the run that way. I'd rather have Fred Warner and Drey Greenlaw level athletes in the secondary vs the LB corps.
Will you feel that way in 2 weeks when the Chiefs torch this Eagles defense? When Kelce goes crazy in the middle of the field because their Linebackers are horrible.
Kelce and McKinnon. If they go off and the Chiefs win, it'll be a win for linebackers in the league.
The defense is fine, maybe an improvement at end to help out Bosa and some upgrade at DT to improve the run defense.
I agree, the defense is fine - for a Jimmy type QB. But if Purdy/Lance is an elite passer, then I think you have to redesign the defense to compliment such a elite passer. Just my two cencents on.
And thats why I think Kyle goes with Wilks (who is a defensive back oriented coach) instead of a Linebacker guy in a Demeco 2.0 or Salah 2.0.
Yeah, but I'm confused. What does the defense have to do with the offense?
Complementary football. Defense helps offense, offense helps defense - and special teams help both. For example there are two ways to stop an opponents running attack. One is to have great linebackers that can stuff the run, the other is simply to play keep away on offense, reduce the opponents time of possession where they can't run, fall behind, and have to pass.
Not saying we should have sucky linebackers, but I am saying let's get the DLine and DBacks elite like the eagles while at the same time doing the best they can to keep the Linebacker corps strong.
