John Elway had front office experience before Denver.

And you have done what in the NFL to make a judgement about Lynch and how he will do?

From a piece on NFL that sounds good: Lynch has been around every team in the league in his job as an analyst. He has talked to all the GMs and coaches. Got to know how the best franchises in the business work.

If you were going to hire a "secret shopper" to find out how people were doing, Lynch would have been that guy.

There are a lot of ways to run a business. There are some standard templates but that doesn't mean you have to follow that template to be successful. Lynch is a very bright guy. Very well spoken. Understands the game better than 90% of the talking heads out there. He is definitely a "football" guy. It will be interesting to see how he fills in some of the spots around him.

The more I think about it, the more I like it. Going outside the box is not a bad idea, particularly when you have a bright, perceptive guy leading the charge.

That Lynch played under Bill Walsh, Mike Shanahan, Jon Gruden, Tony Dungy and Bill Belichick certainly doesn't hurt. The guy has seen winners, been coached by them, he's won a SB and has a close relationship with the new 49ers HC.

If you truly want to hire a leader to effect a culture change, this is the kind of guy you want. He is also a no BS guy. I liked the TV tandem of Lynch and Kevin Burkholdt (sp?). Lynch saw the game and called it the way it was. The fact they usually got the #1 or #2 game each week says a lot about how well-regarded they were. That sets a tone. You can fill in under and around him but he will be the face of how 49er football will be viewed.

Having said that, one of the most daunting tasks facing the new GM will be trying to attract solid FA candidates. I have a feeling that if John Lynch is on the phone for someone like Alshon Jeffrey he will be a lot more likely to at least present an offer than if it were some former personnel guy from who-knows-where.

Yep. One of the first things I thought ...after the initial shock. He will definitely set the tone of the culture for the team. And I believe it will be a very good one from what I can gather from Lynch's personality and communication skills.

If Lynch had ANY experience it might be different. Also, Elway had tons of executive experience owning dealerships.

I like John Lynch and hope he succeeds. But every scout/personnel guy who has spent decades trying to climb GM ladder should be disturbed.

Did they say this stuff about Elway whose only front office experience previously had been in the Arena Football League? Its like some huge affront that the 49ers have chosen a different path.

Yup. All those scout/personnel guys who are disturbed by this.....tough s**t. Thats the business.

Some guys have less barrier to entry based on their pedigree. Lynch isn't some guy who got into football as a 22 year old grad assistant. He's a HOF player with league ties.

If he works well with Shanahan and they get players to fit the system, it's all good.

I'll believe it when he signs Kirk Cousins, Alshon Jeffries, Calais CAmpbell, Eric Berry or Pierre Garcon

No kidding and the guy has a higher role than just GM he is the Vice President. lol

First off what experience doesn't he have?

Scouting, making a draft board, running a draft, trading players, signing players, working contracts...pretty much everything on the desired/required skills section of the application.

Per source new 49ers G.M. John Lynch will hire a personnel specialist as his No. 2. He already knows who it will be.

Via PFT

Mark Dominik would be my guess. Lynch knows him from his Tampa Days, Shanahan knows him from his Tampa days.

Basically they are going for the Broncos setup.

Lynch-Public face of the front office and franchise

Marathe-Contracts+salary cap

Dominik+Gamble-Personnel

If this is the direction they are envisioning, I'm on board.

What i find absolutely hilarious is that in the last 3 weeks nobody in the sports world said "hey, you know who would be a great hire, John Lynch". Nobody on nfl network, espn, knbr, numerous experts weighing, posters on this board and now he gets hired and people are saying "what a great hire"

That's because literally nobody expected it.

His name was never leaked during this entire interview process. People don't just look through all the NFL HOF-caliber players and think "Man if someone with a GM opening looked at one of these guys, they may be on to something."

Like Vernon Davis Jamba juice stores?
Now I really wish the Niners had a Bill Polian type above the GM.

Better hire the more you think about it.

Respect, comunication, work ethic, leadership and large network of NFL personnel to go along with a good relationship with a young coach who still may have some episodes of immaturity in him.

The experience factor is hard to overlook but he already has the network and relationships with pro personnel to be able to start bringing in those who do have the experience similar to Elway.

If nothing else the FO finally has a frontman who that is respected and liked league wide.

👍👋🤙
Awww, the GM that's not really a GM that Jedaraag can still control.

Brilliant
John Lynch, Tom Gamble and Mark Dominick could be a nice trio

Its almost as if he's going to be bringing in a personnel guy to be handling most of that stuff along with Marathe and Gamble.

This. Its like arguing that Tomsula deserved to be a HC because he had been a HC in NFL Europe.

Elway worked out because he's a smart, hard-working guy that surrounded himself with other smart people. Hopefully Lynch can do the same.

John Elway didn't "deserve" the job he got. He got it because he was a Bronco legend. So not really the same thing as Lynch. It would be if it was Steve Young getting the GM job.
