I actually like this hire, but not for the obvious reasons.

1. I like it because to me it signals that Jed/Paraage are willing to do whatever it takes to get their HC. If it meant hiring Jan from Accounting to get Shanny, they were willing to do it. I like that it seems they Jed/Paraage have eaten some humble pie.

2. Free Agency. I think Lynch can generate some interest in SF as a landing spot for big time FAs. Nobody wanted anything to do with Jed/Baalke/Paraage, and with good reason. Lynch and Shanny should be able to rebrand the team, and that will attract more FAs.

3. It wasn't leaked. This is a big deal. This shows players (and fans) that the toxic culture from the last few years is a thing of the past. At least for now. The fact that Lynch came out of left field means that trust was upheld.

4. If somehow Shanny backs out of the HC deal, then Jed will have so much egg on his face that he will probably never show his face in public again. This would be funny.

Honestly, I think this hire signals that Shanny is calling the shots, as he should. Jed is smart enough to know that he has zero trust in the league and from the fans. I think (hope) he fades in to the background and gives Lynch/Shanny plenty of space to operate.

Jed York Hired Singleterry no coordinator experience, Tomsula same as aforementioned and now a GM with no experience and you find positive in it?

I like John Lynch and hope he succeeds. But every scout/personnel guy who has spent decades trying to climb GM ladder should be disturbed.

Did they say this stuff about Elway whose only front office experience previously had been in the Arena Football League? Its like some huge affront that the 49ers have chosen a different path.

No kidding and the guy has a higher role than just GM he is the Vice President. lol

If Lynch had ANY experience it might be different. Also, Elway had tons of executive experience owning dealerships.

First off what experience doesn't he have?

Scouting, making a draft board, running a draft, trading players, signing players, working contracts...pretty much everything on the desired/required skills section of the application.

Scouting, if anyone knew how to scout a player I think John Lynch is more than qualified? Shoot some college players that don't make it to the NFL become area scouts, who can't Lynch who's been around everyone from NFL HC, assistant coaches, Pro Bowl players to Undrafted rookie free agents. Running the draft, what does it take to run a draft and why can't he make a call to his ole pal John Elway on a few pointers. Shoot, Louis Riddick ESPN analyst who was a candidate for the job has never ran a draft and besides, Mark Dominik (ex-GM) is likely to come aboard.

Contracts and Salary Cap, two words, Paraag - Marathe

Again, some of you underestimate Lynch's years playing on two different NFL team winning Super Bowls, being around contract situations with agents and speaking with GM's. I'm baffled that again some of you underestimate the connections he has in the NFL. Sure it may work and it may not, but you never know until you try, if anything it was a 50/50 shot with any GM candidate.

You just described all the qualities Mike Singletary had.

What makes Lynch qualified to scout players? Rich Eisen probably watches more at the combine than Lynch does.

What does it take to run a draft? Seriously!

He's going to use a board he didn't create and just pick who's next? Trading up and down, what's good and bad, etc. This is so vital for this team right now and you have somebody with 0 knowledge doing it.

Paraag doesn't call teams for trades.

This is the top trigger guy on everything and he's never done one iota of FO work. He's going to have multiple people in his ear and he has no history to go off of to make the best decision. How much tape can he watch in 2 months to accuralty judge 2 different players that 2 different people are pushing for?

Hiring an actual GM to do all the GM work so all accountability falls with him was/is the smartest decision.

Yes what does it take to run a draft, enlighten me.....go ahead. After you tell me this I'll answer the rest of your post.

Shanahan was the first one that Lynch contacted in the whole process.

Jay Glazer‏ @JayGlazer49ers were looking to do what Denver did w John Elway and had Lynch meet w Kyle Shanahan this week

#49ers ass't GM Tom Gamble capable of running the draft, but 49ers likely to add someone else w/ FO experience. Nothing imminent, I'm told.

Wait so Lynch wont be running the draft?

Shanahan will be. Lol. You know this, man

This draft will be an extension of baalke and gamble unless shanny has been moonlighting as a scout this past year.
does he really need to scout players ?

evaluate, yeah, he kinda does. Point being all of the other candidates minus riddick had an active role looking at prospects coming out this year. Lynch, not so much.
i mean like how far does this scouting have to go?

Some people on message boards can come up with great drafts without ever leaving the house
My knee-jerk reaction upon learning JL as the new GM was ouch!! But I remember Bill Walsh being very dissapointed when he couldn't get him from the draft. Lynch prepared for this opportunity since he retired and he built himself a network of great football people over the years as sports analyst and covering NFL games. He has credibility but short on front office experience, but he agreed to keep the majority of personnnel intact including TG. All along, Jed and Paraag was looking for a GM who would keep the current personnel and somehow Lynch, after discussions with TG, he felt good about the current system and scouting and player acquisition personnel (coaches not included). The key to this hire would be the hiring of Lynch's right hand man.

I havent heard one FA who said they want to go anywhere or play for anybody

Keep in mind, Gamble and Dominik could be in the mix, there's your draft/scouting and free agent department,
Paragg as the contract/cap guy

I had a feeling Gamble was in the mix somehow

Most Niner fans here are pessimistic...with reasonable reason, I think were in good shape

I expect Lynch to be more of an Elway type, spokesmen, face of the franchise type
Its kind of a reach saying a Stanford scholar cant handle the duties of an NFL front office,
most do much more complicated tasks

You honestly don't think he had anything to do with this? He was probably driving the bandwagon.

**** yeah, this is cool LMAO... not a damn soul saw this coming, not even baby Jesus!!!!!!

GTFO

I won't whine tho... I always liked him as a player. He was alright as an analyst. BUT GM?!!

We'll see wassup... I'd feel more comfortable if Shanny had something to do with this.

#NotTrippinAtAll

Heck, we got armchair GM's all over this site, why not let an NFL-connected guy have a chance?

We just hired a male model to be the front man of the franchise. Lynch is a male bimbo who is dependent on other hires to succeed as a GM. I'm hoping we bring in a talent guy sooner than later for the draft.

He's going to delegate the same way Elway did when he was first hired in Denver. People are getting all worked up over the title but essentially the 49ers just hired a vice president of football operations and Lynch will bring in his own GM to run personnel.

I don't watch Fox Sports much. Does he come across as knowing his sh!t or not?

Yes, he absolutely does! I was just remarking on how well thought out his analysis was during the last week of the season. I'm pumped about this hire!!

Does he???

Ben Muth‏ @FO_wordofmuth
John Lynch is smart, so the fact that he's this bad of a broadcaster means he's lazy. He's says dumb/wrong things all the time

I don't know who Ben Muth is but the fact that Lynch was on the top game week to week says he is NOT a bad broadcaster. If he was bad, his name would be Ronde Barber and he would be doing 49er games.
