AJ green is big and hasn't played a single game this yr? Hurd is big and hasn't played a single game this yr.

People forget Sanders tore his achilles last yr and didn't miss a beat? f**king right he's tough.

I mean that's your answer to everything....big WR lol.

If they can't move or run proper routes in this scheme they're useless. This is a timing based offense.
In another film session last season, Witherspoon recalls being among those called out by Shanahan. "If I had anybody behind some of you, I'd cut you," the coach said, addressing a few players, according to the cornerback. "Next year we're not going to be in a position where we have any of this bulls---." As Witherspoon reflects on his coach's reaction, he understands it as well now as he did then: "I couldn't really argue," he says. "It comes with the responsibility of having the potential to be great."

Our biggest mistake was not signing a quality receiver in the off season and trying to draft our way out of the fact that our receivers are a bunch of finesse types.

We are now seeing this play out....

I would agree. Outside of Deebo who plays with a RB mindset, there are too many finesse types. Deebo just needs to hit the jugs machine 100x a day after practice. And on that note, I have to ask...do we even own a jugs machine? I say that a bit facetiously but I'm kind of serious too....
Maybe you should go to one of the open training camps. They all take turns on the jugs before and after practice.

Ok good to hear that they have and are using them. I make the 3 hr drive to all the games, but have not made it to a training camp yet.

Julian Edelman
Santonio Holmes
Hines Ward
Deion Branch

All are SB MVP's, meaning they played when the stakes were highest, they showed up and showed out. None are big receivers and not a single big receiver has won a SB MVP in the last 20 years.

Good receivers regardless of size > Big receivers.

True, but it's not a bad thing either to have big receivers, Pittsburgh and New England both have been trying to acquire them. From Plaxico Burress to JuJu Smith-Schuster and Randy Moss (16-0 with NE) to Mohamed Sanu. Besides, the 49ers have those shorter-quicker receivers in Emmanuel Sanders and Deebo Samuels.

Juju is 6-1. Hardly big.

Randy Moss was acquired because he is Randy fing Moss.

Lets be honest, New England nor Pittsburg could give 2 sh*ts about WR height.. they only care if they can do their job and will be where they need to be. Randel El, A. Brown, Sanders, Troy Brown, Deion Branch, Edelman, Amendola, Dorsett and Cooks. Recently they have actually struck out more often than not going chasing taller WR's, which happens to allot of teams. They tried to be a SizeQueen and learned their lesson. Unless a tall WR falls in their laps they just go with who they consider to be the best for their scheme, size is an afterthought. Most of the taller wide receivers dont last long on either of those teams.

Wouldnt even include Moss or Gordon to be perfectly honest. The niners traded up with New England and gave them an extra 4th which they used to get Moss. They basically deferred their 1st round pick that year to jump 20+ spots in the next years 1st round and got Moss for that 4th, a future HOF'er that was discontent cause he didnt want to waste his career losing with the sh*t show that was the Lane Kiffin raiders. F*cking steal if Ive ever seen one. Gordon... he's a flier like Brown, you either adhere to the Brady/Belicheck way or GTFO.

He's the offensive equivalent to Belicheck. York will never let him walk out.

Nope it isn't, but too much emphasis is put on needing size. Size is something you would like to have some of but don't have to have to be a successful receiver or to have a successful offense in this league. Skill is more important than size.

I posted it a long time ago in the Metcalf thread when this discussion was going on about receiver size. I forget the exact numbers, but it's something like all but 1 of the receivers in the top 15 or 16 in total yards all time are 6'2" and under, IIRC.

looked it up again, there's 2 in the top 15 all-time receiving yards leaders for WR's. Randy Moss, 6'4" and Terrel Owens, 6'3". Everyone else is 6'2" or under.
Also, there's 3, my bad. Forgot Andre Johnson. There's conflicting things about Fitz, some places say 6'2" some 6'3"
Here's the list, just for the convo:
Jerry Rice
Larry Fitzgerald
Terrel Owens
Randy Moss
Isaac Bruce*
Tim Brown*
Steve Smith*
Marvin Harrison*
Reggie Wayne*
Andre Johnson
Chris Carter
Anquan Boldin
Henry Ellard*
Torrey Holt*
An asterisk denotes 6'0" or under.
