49ers Head Coach Kyle Shanahan Thread

Couldn't have said it better myself Shanahans' decision making and play calling have been big contributors in both losses.

Gould: obvious. he better not be playing next week.

Shanny:

1. Farting around the end of the first half with a minute and timeouts, until the Mostert run changes his mind that he should go for points (ya think?!). They coulda gotten closer for Gould.

2. Blowing timeouts in the second half. Inexcusable. Ultimately didn't matter but poor poor game management.

3. You put an inaccurate QB, in the rain, in shotgun, four yards behind the line of scrimmage on 4th and 1, while Raheem Mostert is getting at least 5 yards a clip. Horrible play call. A QB sneak, sweep to the edge; even a play action rollout...ANYTHING would have been better. Even if you don't get it you could see the logic. The game was over once he made that idiotic move.

Hard fought but really brutal loss. This team seemingly can't compete with the real big boys and grab the win when it's there for the taking.

...............#2) Shanahan for at least the 2nd time the last several weeks has PISS-POOR clock management as halves ends.
In particular the 2nd half,....where we had all the time in the world yet bled it away,...ending up with 2 timeouts right around
Robbie's limit and a 1st down that we cant really make anything out of for a better kick or a TD.

Result -3 to -7

What's also interesting is it was the same exact strategy while we were tied in the 4th quarter, as the analyst pointed out. Bleed as much clock as possible.....EVEN WITH NO LEAD. To me,...that's playing scared and showing your team a mix of just not trusting your offense (and defense enough to stop Lamar) to win this game. Essentially,...get the halves over with ASAP and cross your fingers at the end!

Guys,...everything else you wanna talk about or make out of this game is your own choice, but the above 10/14 point differential.

A) Garoppolo's gonna Garoppolo,...which is a good thing as he played good in this game,...BUT in close games, his usual pick or fumble on our side of the field in inopportune moments that are easily converted to points. If you have some sloppiness in you,...you need to have it on the opponent's side of the 40 yard line.

B) Kyle,...getting to know him better and better as well. Undoubtedly an excellent game planner when it comes to play designs, et. al. But game and time management is a huge, costly question mark once again this week.

Great game by both teams,...but A and B need to improve for a legit Superbowl Run.

Good post
Now we're stuck with a choke artist of a coach. Unless he wins a super bowl, his reputation will always be a choker.

Well said
I've left well enough alone and tried to be supportive through other mediums.... But KS is not a big game coach, and JG is Alex Smith lite. This is a first round exit team and that's the ceiling.... need to find a great QB to make up for the head coaches shortcomings.

Gotta trust you. I mean your preseason predictions were spot on.

Good post

I partially agree and partially disagree.

A. Yes, turnovers happen. I don't know what the play call was, but it seemed like a long-developing playcall and Jimmy G held onto the ball too long. You're right, he can't fumble there. But we knew there was going to be AT LEAST a turnover in a sloppy game like this. And the fact that it came on our second drive of the game, that's not a big deal. Our defense needed to step up big there and hold them to 3. Didn't happen though.

B. I am perfectly fine with how Kyle ran out the clock in the second half, and how he ran the offense in general. The MVP is sitting there on the other sideline and we want to do everything we can to keep the ball out of his hands. Now, I think he can definitely get better, especially in the first half. After Mostert's big run, I don't know why he was still slowing things down. Run the clock a little, but not a lot. He was showing he learned from our OT loss to Seattle. He didn't use up ANY of the clock then, gave Seattle a chance to score, and it happened. He showed improvement in that area today but using up as much of the clock as possible. Thing is, I think he used up a little TOO much clock. Should've gave us another 10-12 seconds.

Everything else, he showed the best way to beat Jackson today is to keep him on the sidelines. The best offense as of late with the top-MVP candidate was held to THREE points in the second half due to our defense stepping it up through some nice halftime adjustments, and due to Kyle controlling the ball and going on long, time-eating drives. You do that against teams like the Ravens. Don't care if you're up, tied, or down by a score. As long as we control the ball, we're doing it just right.

Lots for Kyle to learn though, and if this game taught us anything, it's that he is showing he can learn and adjust. He'll get better.

Agree he's get better, he should the guy is only 39. The key us winning against them in the super bowl is our offense against their defense. This time they had home field advantage and the rain. I think the rain changed the passing calculations, but the rain stopped in the 2nd half (or slowed down) and we did a lot better in the 2nd half offensively than the first half.

I think Bellicheat has a good shot at knocking them out of the playoffs, if anything. As long as they don't turn the ball over, I think the Pats can do it.

We've lost 2 games outta 12 and blown out a bunch of teams. Seems like his playcalling has been more good than bad.

I agree, BUT these close games force emotional errors.

If Kyle comes back and says he should have done something different, like with the Seahawks game, then the pressure likely tilted him.

It's a poker game at times and only experience will fix it.

I mean hey,...fine,...you can like it. Just please acknowledge the fact that bleeding the clock on THAT drive costed us at least 3 points,....wasting 2 timeouts essentially left to dry with a 1st down and only time for a prayer of a long field goal.

It was COSTLY. Especially then then when we were almost in scoring range,....and again as the 4th closed out.

You liking something and something definitely costing us are 2 completely different concepts.
Proud of our defense for showing there's no need to be as scared of Lamar as perhaps you and Kyle are. PLAY YOUR GAME.
