49ers Head Coach Kyle Shanahan Thread

I'm sorry, I have to be critical of Shanny right now. Unlike the defense Shanny has much of what he requested on offense. I understand that there's been injuries. But the defense is 7 or 8 players down. Yet the Saleh (who's likely gonna be a HC in 2021) has found a way to scheme this defense to being competitive. The offense is missing the starting RB, a WR, and a center. And the QB has been down a few times. I'm sorry, there's no excuse for this anemic offensive output from Shanny. There are some injuries, but Shanny isn't exactly devoid of weapons, at least not the weapons HE wanted.

- The O-line is only missing one starter, and his replacement has played very good
- Pettis was there
- Jimmy G started (though hobbled)
- Juice was there
- Kittle was there
- Aiyuk was there
- Taylor was there
- Coleman was there
- Jet was there (barely)

Shanny don't have all his weapons but he he has a enough to be more competitive than yesterday. For an offensive mind roundly considered a top 2 offensive mind in the league (which he is), and top play caller (which he definitely is), missing 2 offensive weapons should not be that consequential, especially when your defense is missing 5 starters and 2 key rotational players yet still playing competitive ball and giving the offence multiple chances to score.

I didn't mention Bourne because it seems to me that he's not a Shanny guy and Shanny really don't wanna feature him. Personally, I think that Shanny needs to direct more of the passing game to Bourne. He's been our most consistent down field option. But because Shanny is hell-bent on winning with "his guys" (that ego I was referring to) he just won't use Bourne more than a complementary element to the offense.

Pettis being anywhere close to the field is just inexcusable, and it exposes what I've been saying about Shanny when it comes to the WR position - he's firmly in his ego about this position. There was no reason that Pettis had any business dressed at all, for any reason. Here we have Kevin White on the PS yet we find Pettis dressed, and on the field at a critical time in the game no less. Granted, Kevin White hasn't exactly lit the league up. But you will never make me believe that Pettis' gave this team a better chance to win than White. (If White is injured I stand corrected.)

Shanny is showing why coaches should NOT have too much say in when it comes to personnel. Say whatever you will about scheme fit, but this team is sorely missing a pure outside WR who can consistently get open downfield and play outside the numbers. At some point during games flashy schemes of razzle-dazzle, smoke-n-mirrors, and exotic motions & shifts simply won't do. There will be games like last night where a team will take the run away and force us to play a straight up passing game with outside WR's. And at this point we just can't do that, and the reason we can't do that is because our top schemer and play caller HC has a love affair with slot-style WR's.

And we passed on DK Metcalf because . . . ? Oh yeah, he's a physical big-body who don't run routes well.
It sometimes looks like he coaches as if he was the OC instead of the HC. He's still learning (I hope). Right now I think he's too married to the short passing game. I know Seattle was up by 20 when Mullens came in and probably let up a little but at that point it looked like he just let him go out and play. No game plan, just find the open guy and throw it. Maybe he needs to loosen up a bit and let the QBs just play. You notice how when Mullens or CJ come into a game late they usually make some plays. When they start, they struggle because they have to worry about EXECUTING certain plays instead of MAKING plays.
Of course Kyle deserves some criticism for yesterday. However, I still believe in him moving forward. Yesterday, he didn't seem "dialed in" to the game. Almost as if we were looking ahead to Thursday which is weird. Divisional games mean more how could you not be? Even Jerry Rice said it this morning. He saw no urgency in the team. Seattle had the worst passing defense in the league and we couldn't take advantage.

Kyle tried to go vanilla and it back fired.

You're exactly right. Shanahan is obsessed with his system, and he doesn't really like to do things that go outside it. His system is rigid, and that's part of the problem. As you said, whenever Mullens or Beathard come in late and are just able to go out and sling they do well. Shanny hates when his plays break down.

The post before yours mentioned Shanahan's live affair with certain players and its absolutely true. He wants guys who are "system guys" and doesn't seem to like guys who transcend it.

.. I can imagine how he can ruin Trevor's career..

playing well early until we called that 3 & 5 wild cat.. . couldn't we do this on 2nd down, using the wild cat on 3rd down basically is telling the defense that we are NOT throwing the ball..

^^^^ This was the sentiment I was looking to squash immediately.

Yes, he can improve. He's, what, 40, 41? Carroll won't be coaching the Seahawks in 2030. I'd rather have 50-year-old, 14 years experience Kyle by then over Kelly 3.0 we'd be on by then.
Shanahan had a bad game. He is young and there are no other coaches minus one or two who are better than him. You don't get rid of the offensive mind that he has. I hope he is here for the next 20 years
Maybe KS designs the plays but let someone else call them in the game? He seems to be a great players coach. And we know he designs some great game plans. Maybe it's time to let someone else call the play so Kyle can concentrate more of game managing. idk just a thought.

20 years using his current record means he's due to have 15 losing seasons over that period.

No.

Play calling is one of his strengths. But that doesn't mean he won't occasionally be outcoached or call a bad game.

Walsh called his own plays and once got owned 49-3 in the playoffs by Parcells. In his 7th season as a HC. With a 10-win team coming off a bye. (Montana was famously knocked out, but it was already 21-3 at that time, not counting the score by NYG on that play itself).

It happens.

Grammar is embarrassing and now we have some fan getting on the front page calling for Shanny to be on the hot seat. Jfc. His entire team is injured including the QB and they are still in the playoff hunt (expanded by one team). This fan says shanny "featured" Hasty... umm yeah man the rest of the Arby's are hurt, including Coleman.

Embarrassing article. The zone aggregates real articles and opinion pieces from creditable writers, why the need for drunk fans at the bar typing up some nonsense?

100%

I don't always agree with the opinions of proper journalists but at least they know how to write properly and present a well thought out argument.

These fan articles are getting embarassing.

If he's not calling plays then what is he managing? He's certainly not touching the defense and shouldn't be. One of the major reasons you hire someone like Shanahan is because he is your offense and his playcalling ability is at the top of the league.

This is just people overreacting to the moment rather than thinking rationally. The 49ers right now have worse injury issues than any other team in football. You can bounce back from only so many injuries before your entire roster readiness and ability to execute is compromised. When you have this many guys off the practice squad and the street, you're going to have some major struggles, its just how it goes. Fans can deal with that reality rationally or get overly emotional and start demanding that they do everything differently than what already got them to a SB just a year ago.
