Best coach in the NFC
FTFY. He's on track for the NFL though. That's for sure.
I said what I said. Andy Reid ain't doing this with his 3rd string QB
Fair take. I just mean he has to win it at some point no matter the QB to truly be considered the best in the NFL.
Reid being 1-4 in the playoffs during his time in KC also blew a 28pt lead in the playoffs, Much didn't change until he got maybe one of the greatest of all time at QB. Now they've been to 5 straight AFC champ games since Maholmes has been there. 1-1 in the Superbowl, but should be 0-2 and is now only considered a HOF coach cause of the ring.
Hopefully Kyle can get at least 1, because without that Ring he will never be considered a HOF coach and thats a sad reality
True. People already annointing him don't know what this game is about. It's about championships. Shanahan needs at least one. Without that one he's just Marty schottenheimer or Dan reeves. A loss sunday and no one is talking about how he's the best in the NFL.
That's gold coming from the dude who wants him fired. Absolute f**king gold
What Shanahan has done is extremely impressive, but it's still a good point. Marty Schottenheimer was a terrific coach that led the Browns, Chiefs, and Chargers to MULTIPLE playoff appearances each, but only made it as far as AFC Championship... losing 3 times. In 21 seasons, Schottenheimer was a proven coach, but couldn't win the BIG games. With such a large sample size, across multiple teams, he's the common denominator in at all, unfortunately.
When you're deep in the playoffs, the talent level between teams can be very close... to a point that many games are often decided by a couple plays. As a head coach, there's a point where your decisions can affect the game at a macrolevel--how conservative/aggressive are you? Do you punt or go for it? Do you challenge this play? How well do you manage the clock? If you're the playcaller, are you winning your play calls against presumably another elite coordinator? Are you able to squeeze out the most of your guys? Are your guys prepared to play the game at a high level?
So far, Shanahan's track record speaks for himself. He's a good coach. After year 2 when the "rebuild" was complete, Shanahan has gotten his team to 3 conference championship games in 4 years. That's a good coach that we should keep around. But until he wins the Big One, he will not separate himself from other good coaches, and there will always be the question, especially when we've had heartbreaking losses to the Rams in the NFCCG and the Chiefs in the SB.
In my opinion, Shanahan is still a young coach whose story is still ongoing. It took 12 years for Tom Coughlin to win his ring. 14 for Bill Cowher. 21 for Andy Reid. Hopefully we don't have to wait long for Shanahan to win it all, and hopefully it's this year.
