49ers Head Coach Kyle Shanahan Thread

Originally posted by Paul_Hofer:
Of course, head coaches work hard. Shanahan works hard and has a team that is singular in its team-first attitude. As a head coach, Shanahan has gotten to the NFC title game the last two years, one SB appearance, and a 6-3 playoff record. But Kyle may be like Mariucci. Mariucci was also great at getting the Niners into the playoffs if not far into the playoffs. It may be that 49ers' fans should enjoy the high percentage of victories and be ready for playoff losses.

Bill Walsh blamed himself for a loss to the Chicago Bears during the 1988 regular season. Once admitting he'd been too conservative, he changed his game plan and beat the Bears handily in the NFC title game at below freezing game in Chicago. I think this lack of admitting his mistakes is why Kyle holds himself back from achieving more success in the playoffs. He believes he wasn't mistaken in not calling throwing the red flag on the Eagles 4th down catch on their first TD drive, weighing a lost timeout vs. the chances of shutting down the Eagles' drive and setting a tone for the rest of the game. He believes he wasn't mistaken in not investing more in the offensive line that led to the end-of-season injuries to three QBs plus one with a concussion. Considering all that, Kyle did a great job.

Certainly, Kyle gets a lot of things right. Victories are proof of that. But he may not have that top gear to take the top prize.

So the secret to winning is landing a journeyman RT or a LT that's never played football?

They didn't even make the playoffs but they feel like they won the SB. You would think Dan Campbell is a SB winning coach with how much they love him now. It should give us Niners fans perspective because the past 4 years we are near the top of the league and considered a "top dog." That's because of Kyle. He is irreplaceable no matter if he has won or wins a SB moving forward.

Yup. People in here complaining about eating filet mignon, while a good portion of the league is eating hotdogs lol.

🤣 That analogy is f**king great.

People wanting Shanahan fired don't know football from a hole in the ground.

So we are the lions except we make the playoffs. Good job.

Can we get off this loser mentality please? I've been watching the niners since the early 80s. I know what this franchise is. Most of you grew up with Mike Nolan so you have no frigging clue the standard this franchise set back then. And now I'm supposed to sit here and be grateful that we get to the playoffs. Gtfo with that. York promised us superbowl banners. Shanahan has failed so far plain and simple.

I think your view is too black and white. It's not easy to win it all, and the best we can hope for in this day and age of free agency, where player movement occurs a lot more than those glory years, is to be in contention, then get lucky and win it all one year. Kyle lost both QBs in the NFCCG, so while it can get tiring, he was put in a very tough spot. We know the importance of the QB position in today's NFL and he had none vs PHI. It's not a loser mentality. No one here is happy losing in the final four (again) - that would be loser mentality.

I remember you calling Jed a bad owner because he hadn't won a SB. I then asked you if the difference between Jed being a good/bad owner is whether or not Crabs catches a fade pass, or if EmanSanders catches the deep bomb. That's what I mean by 'black and white'.

I respect this response. And yes a part of it is luck. But when the same thing continues to happen year in and year out it goes beyond luck. At what point are we allowed to question Shanahan? At what point are we allowed to question whether he can take this team over the hump?

Jed isn't a bad owner because he hadn't won a superbowl. I labeled him a bad owner because he had made certain decisions that many of us questioned and it sent this franchise back royally. With that said I do think he's improved.

But while it isn't just black and white, shannahan gets a free pass here by many posters and it shouldn't be that way.

He lost to PHI because the team didn't have a third string QB suited up that can play. You might call it an excuse, I call it a reason.

The other two times the 49ers lost in the playoffs, it was to the SB champs (KC, LAR). I know it's frustrating, and none of us 49er fans are happy, but he has made this team competitive and relevant. Perhaps one day I'll be sick of playoff eliminations with Kyle and I'll be done with him. But I'm not there yet because I recognize what he's built here after things were so dim just 5 years ago.

I don't think anyone is there yet it's 80% KS that's a landslide and there are always folks who vote no cuz it's an option. What he does well I often don't mention as it's obvious and goes without saying, like the KS run game, the play design, play calls, the history with our club, etc. I focus on the stuff I would like to see different like more analytics on 4th down, more going for it, and having a real GM who can make real GM moves. Hard to be a top in the world coach and GM.

I guess it's easier to list the complaints than the compliments as the complaints list is much shorter

We aren't anyone…this isn't the 80s where you can just give everyone all the cash.

that's the great thing about today's NFL it's a year to year league where you can go from trash to the playoffs.

More power to you if you enjoy coming up short year in and year out. . .

Why are you still a fan then? Go be a KC fan if you think it's just cake to be a consistent Super Bowl champ.

If you want to take it next level you eat your steak like a good American with ketchup. It's how the SB MVP does it.

Did he? Or did he lose because he couldn't keep his qbs healthy? I don't know of another team that's had this kind of luck with qbs health.

Eagles were up 7-0, and purdy got smashed with a turnover. All this prior to purdy getting hurt. The Eagles first td also could have been overturned had shanny thrown the replay flag. Shannahan was already off to a bad start before disaster struck.

I'd like to think they lost because of purdys injury and yes it is one reason they lost, but you can't say it's the only reason. Winning includes keeping your qbs protected.

I posted before the season started that the qb protection would be the downfall of this team. I even came up with #pray4trey back in August. I should have trademarked it.

Purdy's turnvover and him getting hurt occurred on the same play. Yeah Kyle should have thrown the challenge flag the moment the WR got up screaming to quickly line up and snap the ball.

As I watch replay a couple things going on there. One it was a circus one hander with collision on the ground. Two is Hufanga immediately signals incomplete I think before Smith gets up.

Credit Philly they clearly had a concept in place for how to go hurry up in this exact situation. From the sideline KS probably can't see jack on that one, relying on someone upstairs to let him know to throw it, based on broadcast. Lil gamesmanship here could be used, wouldn't be a bad time for someone to cramp up a bit lol.. or what if KS calls TO that would give him more time, correct? Hard to blame KS here tho the Hufanga knowing it was on the ground plus them racing to the LOS like their hair is on fire should cause some alarms to go off. Still they executed it so well and so fast I have a hard time really giving KS much blame here.. they just got us.

When I saw Smith get up and start punching his fists together, I told my wife, "he didn't catch it. Shanahan should challenge the catch." It just seemed such an obvious signal that he should have challenged on that basis alone, without needing to see the replays. (hindsight)
Not sure one can reasonably expect a better than final four result without a team having great luck,or an unfair advantage( Mahomes?) or maybe a gift from god (Goodell) I think I will settle for competitiveness and the hope for a Bowl win soon.Still hugely proud of this organization.
