49ers Head Coach Kyle Shanahan Thread

I think Kyle wanted a backup QB to backup Trey Lance after Jimmy's 49ers contract is over, so he drafted Purdy. Trey Lance was the starter, and probably still would be the starter but for Purdy. Just that Lance (without Purdy) would still be getting the Reps like Zach Wilson behind Aaron Rogers. Now with the 49ers It would probably be Sam Darnold as the starting QB, and Trey Lance backing him up as QB2, like it is with the Jets and Zach Wilson.

No they wanted Purdy they liked him in pre-draft process picked him and cut Sudfield after seeing him in TC who was guaranteed 2 millionwho knew the system and for a #3 QB is more than good

No matter what he does fans will complain. That is obvious. Leave the starters in, see above. Pull the starters, 'Kyle doesn't know how to finish games' blah blah blah

That guy is a 🤡 just ignore him

I don't think cmc or bosa should have been in the game that late, what's the point?

I thought the same, but maybe he wants the early season reps to get them acclimated? If we can get a lead like that again I would rather see the kids in the game.

Also, the announcer mentioned it. 49ers under Kyle typically don't have huge leads. If this becomes more regular, he has to adapt with how to call that and close the game out etc. I thought that was insightful and a good point.

Personally I would love to see him start stepping on throats when we are already winning and teach these guys who to be relentless, unmerciful, mofo's

If Kyle likes a player he usually trades up. He didn't do that with Purdy.

Kyle liked him after he saw Purdy in training camp, and the rest is history. Predraft it was Slowik and Griese that strongly advocated for him - and by that strong recommendation, ShanaLynch drafted Brock.

Having said all that, what a hell of a QB the 49ers have. He's looking more and more like a generational talent every game.

Any time you draft a player and he ends up playing well you have to be a little bit lucky. Every player is a question mark until he shows what he can do in an NFL game. There are some players that are so good that the only way they fail is if they get hurt but they're few and far between. QBs are the biggest question marks because the college game is so different than the NFL, especially the defenses.

Unfortunately, there are challenged fans who are proud, unabashed, and unapologetic Kyle Shanahan detractors for life.

Agree, and I'll just say that I'd like that QB3 position strengthened maybe with a younger player. I'd love to see Kyle do another 7th round QB pick next year to bolster that QB3 position. Maybe lighting will strike twice!
A big win on the road to start the season, as well as no Injuries. What more could we possibly ask for?

Now on to week 2 so we can give the Rams a beat down too

One major worry I have is when Shanahan, like in the eagles NFC championship game, where he calls a play action pass, and the defense essentially just flat out ignores the play action and targets the QB. Situations that worry me is where Kyle calls a play action and the defense blitzes Purdy. In these cases, the offensive line and the RB's have to be able to pick up the blitz, and I think Kyle has to do a better job in establishing the run - to make sure the defense does honor the fake. I haven't seen the two tight end set that I'd like to see in the 4 minute offense to protect Purdy. I think Kyle was leaving McKivitz alone on an island back there too often once Hayward went out with an injury. All in all very happy with the win, but I'd like to see some schematic changes in the four minute offense to better protect Purdy in the fourth quarter as the 49ers (if ahead) are basically ball hogging and using up the clock to end the game.
best coach in the game

Pretty sure I saw a down where CMC was in the slot with Deebo in the backfield. That's the kind of unorthodox stuff I was hoping to see coming out of the offseason with Kyle having 4 months to think up creative ways to confuse the defense.

same.

no proof but I assume the team has thought alot about the play that injured BP and how to negate it.

Yeah, it was Griese (our QB coach) and guys like slowik who fell in love with Purdy during the pre draft process. We had a fourth round grade on him but kept passing him cause they thought he would be there later. I don't think Kyle even watched Brock during the draft process, he saw him In OTAs and camp, after we drafted him and was impressed.

brock also added a lot to his arm after his final college season, which added an element to his game that has helped him a lot in the pros. Added a lot more zip.

I think Kyle became conservative with his play calling once we built up a lead. Doesn't want to put too much film out there if he doesn't have to.
