49ers Head Coach Kyle Shanahan Thread

I attempted to explain the inevitable last week before it happened. It was not well received. Someone referred to me as "braniac" because "I could not understand we are only six months into a rebuilding process". First, we are 3.5 years into a rebuilding process we were told would start with Harbaugh leaving. This is an old marketing strategy used by teams like the Jets and Cleveland and Raiders until lucrative move to Vegas was on the horizon. York has been told by his silicone valley "geniuses" with lap tops doing their thinking for them that it is more lucrative to always be in this mode than actually paying for players that one could win with like a QB. OL or DB impact player. This organization is not run by football people and that is why Harbaugh left. Lynch is a more personable Matt Millen and KS has no experience as a head coach. It will be cheaper to replace both in 3 years than pay enough players to win. Lastly, it is hard to argue we would not be farther along in the "rebuilding" process if we had kept Chip Kelly, given him his choice of QB's that were available, shored up the OL and paid some receivers that do not have hands like feet and hired a competent defensive coordinator. A lot of 49er fans were fooled by the spate of "close games" but as I pointed out those games were not close. They were a combination of teams playing down to the level of competition then putting the inferior team away as needed. I began to see this when serviceable players like Quentin Dial and Ahmad Brooks were let go. The end result is we again have become a team no one wants to play for especially after the way Navorro Bowman was treated to save a few bucks. To be viable as a team you must be able to demonstrate the ability to win games at some point. My point now is the same as before yesterday; this team is not getting better and the players are not better than past few years. Kirk Cousins would be a meaningless addition with that defense. The Yorks have gaffled (some of) us again.

I can't say that I agree with hardly a single thing you said here. Harbaugh was a head case. While I certainly appreciate what he accomplished, short of losing a Super Bowl that is, I wasn't sorry to see him go. Tomsula was overmatched and I never liked the Kelly hire. The team is playing better than they did under Kelly though that obviously isn't reflected in the standings. No question that they took a huge step backwards yesterday but to my mind that is just all part of the process this year. First time coaches, first time GM, a talent depleted roster with a lot of young players. There is going to be a steep learning curve for all of these guys but I haven't seen anything yet this year that suggests they don't have a good chance of getting where they want to go.

There was some real innovative play design on the offense yesterday. Beathard took a beating but hung there in and hopefully learned a few things that will help him in the future. the team didn't look like it quit and seemed to be battling on just about every possession. Bill Walsh said that you can scheme offense but that you need talent on defense. Obviously they are still going to need more help on that side of the ball but it's not all going to happen in one year. The jury is still out on Saleh but I don't have any real complaints about Lynch and Shanahan at this point. The team wasn't going to go anywhere this year so I can honestly say that their record doesn't bother me at all. I see a lot of things to like in what they are doing offensively. It's a young team across the board and they all need to learn what it takes to win in this league so this season will be a huge test and lesson for them. Hopefully they'll come out on the other side with the experience and determination they need to be better next year. Go Niners!!

Very nice post and spot on, including the negatives. Agree with every one, esp harbaw

My personal opinion Shanahan needs to hire an OC and maybe even give up play calling or he's going to be the next Mike Nolan.

But why? Why would he EVER do this? You hire Kyle Shanahan because of HIS offense philosophy and HIS playcalling.

You don't order a pizza and complain when a pizza gets delivered instead of chinese food.

I agree. His play calling is the #1 reason he got hired. If anything he needs a coach to take care of all of the non-game offensive plan/play calling stuff.

who is mostly to blame here? I feel like lack of talent + Saleh's scheme. but we dont have the talent we need in his scheme yet to run it the way it's supposed to. man, i think just out-talented all around.

Harold is invisible. Armstrong is inconsistent. Foster has been injury prone early on. Armstead and Carradine are out now, joining Blair on the injury list. Reid should be starting over Tartt at SS and yesterday we saw why. Robinson can't keep his hands off receivers to save his life, while Dontae Johnson is the polar opposite seemingly always there but never making much of an effort to disrupt passes. Ahkello is raw AF and was completely overmatched going against a guy like Dez. We were literally overmatched one on one in every position group across the board, and you see the results there.

We need players at pretty much every position on defense.

Good post OTC, with one slight addition.

""We need great players at every position"... we just saw what happens when you are overmatched talentwise. You are made to look foolish , inept, and not ready for big time. A game like that brings this home to roost. We aren't near enough ready to take on a stacked heady team like Dallas.

This keeps coming up.. 6 years deals

How many years did chip Kelly and Jim tomsula have?
Let me tell ya..

Chip Kelly has a four-year deal worth $24 million. In comparison, Jim Tomsula had a 4-year, $14 million contract, and Jim Harbaugh had a 5-year, $25 million contract.

"Jed" Broomed 3 coaches in 3 years.

I could care less if Kyle and lynch have 10 year contracts, Jed's past history shows more then what the future has for us fans.

Don't worry let ppl think these two bozos are safe.......then one day................

Well, the good news is NFLN is covering how lost the Falcons are without Kyle Shanahan despite having the same exact personnel as last year.

Which is why I am still pumped we got Shanahan & Lynch in here.

This rebuild is gonna take some time,

Exactly. I told Falcons fans that offense will never look that good again. On another note, good thing the Webzone didn't exist in 1979. Or that some of these folks weren't GMs for Tom Landry in 1959/1960, Jimmy Johnson in '89, etc.
people need to stop overreacting. We had some close losses this seasona and then we get our ass whooped by the cowboys and people are already calling for shanahan to be fired??? that is absolutely ridiculous for people wanting shanahan fired for inheriting a really bad roster. lynch and shanahan will build this thing up and call me a homer all you want.

You should actually count how many guys on the 53 man roster are theirs and how many carried over...

If Jed seriously fires Shanahan and Lynch after this season, I'm officially done and will start boycotting this franchise until ownership changes.

((That's how confident I am that it won't happen))

It won't happen after just one season.

But, if we continue to stink up the joint, it won't last 6 years neither.

What if we go say 2-14 for 3 years in a row? You don't think something will go down?

Hue Jackson has only won 1 game in the last 23 games, that is why he is crapping in his pants now.

At the end of the day it is a business and you have to win games even during a rebuild. It is imperative they show improvements through time to prove they are going in the right direction.

This is Year 1, if we don't win more than 2 games like what Kelly did, one could argue it is already not going in the right direction. There is zero rationale why Shanahan can't do better than Kelly.

Come same time next year if we only have 1 win in 23 games like the Browns now, what do you think the sentiments around will be?

So, I would say if things don't pan out, they will be out after 3 years, maximum 4, but they definitely won't get to 6.
ATL fans him back badly.

Some 49er fans want him gone.
