49ers Head Coach Kyle Shanahan Thread

Enough with this hot take b******t, everyone knew deep down this team was gonna suck at least the first year. I'm not expecting this team to be consistently competitive until year 3. That roster was that bad at the end of last year.

Does it suck? Of course it does, but expecting or even hoping that the team was just gonna hit the ground running with so much of the roster turned over, all new coaches, and new systems on both sides of the ball was completely foolish. Real life doesn't work like Madden. Shanahan and Lynch can't just press some buttons, plug a bunch of guys in and immediately turn this into a playoff team. So they should be fired, right?

I was hoping for an offense ranked somewhere close to 20th and the defense to bounce back towards average along with a large improvement on point diff. Those are attainable at this point. Nobody should be fired. This team has very little talent but I do expect the roster to start to improve but I have yet to see that.

On Monday, a day after his team fell to 0-7, head coach Kyle Shanahan suggested the 49ers wouldn't lose sight of their long-term rebuilding plan to chase largely meaningless victories this season.

"We're just not trying to win enough games to make it look acceptable," Shanahan said. "We're trying to build an organization, build it from the bottom to the top the right way, so we can have sustainable success."

I think him and John want a couple wins though.

The 2016 team lost 13 straight.

Its cool though because Chips gimmicky ass offense beat the rams in week 1. Therefore, Chip > Kyle

More like the Rams' offense being poorly coached.

Chip has a better track record as a head coach. Until further notice he is better.

I'm a little surprised at Kyle saying this... it sounds more like an excuse than what we have been seeing. Obviously Kyle doesn't have the talent for the O and D schemes he plans to run...nonetheless, I am surprised he hasn't made a few concessions to a) give the team a better chance of winning, and b) does something more to protect his potential FR QB. Another few outings like Dallas, and his potential FR QB is going to get injured for the yr, and then, the one best thing he can do for the team...find out if CJ is the one or not...will come to a screeching halt. And many more disasters like Dallas, where our potential FR QB is out there, basically naked....ie, unprotected...is going to bring CJs potential career to a halt. Some big body is going to nail him hard enough to end his career before it even starts.

Kyle is just way to busy and overworked right now, and he maybe missing key things. Sure we are going to lose a tomorrow. But if we lose CJ, then I believe Kyle will have failed in his one, primary goal...and that is to find out if CJ is the one ...or not...and then wehave to go full bore for Cuzins...who I think is the antithesis of what Kyle wants....ie, good, but not great....aka, a stopgap before we find our FR QB.

The Browns are using a similar approach.

Jed said the same thing a couple years ago with the whole getting "rewarded with higher draft picks" comment.

This is such robotic, non-critical thinking. George Seifert had a better track record as head coach than Bill Walsh. Was Seifert better because his track record says so?

Well, they are doing everything in their power, it just hasn't worked out. In 3 of the 5 games, we had a chance to win. An offensive PI by a rookie in the Rams game, a defensive PI by Ward in the AZ game and an offensive PI by Garcon in the Redskins game costs us those games. Not Shanahan, not Lynch, the mistake (or bad call) on the field in those key moments cost us the opportunity to win those games.

You guys miss his point entirely. He's not saying he wouldn't also want wins now, but rather that he's not willing to sell out the team to win a game now in a manner that would result in failing to build sustained success. He's saying that getting an actual, real program in place is more important than doing things to create a false impression of immediate success. Basically, he's working towards long-term sustainable success, not Week 1 Mirage success achieved by Tomsula and Kelly.

This is an interesting take. A popular narrative has been that Kyle is enamored with Cousins to the point that he has tunnel vision and sees Cousins as the only FQB option. I hope you are right and he sees Cousins as a possible good but not great stopgap for a better and younger FQB. I think looking at Cousins as a long term solution could be problematic due to the team having a long road of rebuilding ahead before becoming competitive and Cousins turning 30 before the start of the 2018 season.

Of course it is easy to have this point of view now but one has to question the decision making process that would give someone who has never been a head coach six years and essentially veto power over who would be GM but not be willing to give a coach who has brought an NFL team to the playoffs one more year and his choice of players. Consistency wins in NFL; see Patriots as example of changing only what is needed. Organizations win championships and this one has a huge problem at the top.

I don't buy argument that building for future means losing almost every game. My old college tennis instructor for one class (that's how they did it back then in 1972 or so) former UNLV, SMU and NFL coach Ron Meyer told me when he was at UNLV that "losing only teaches you how to lose". I hope I am wrong but I think way too many players were let go this year and that will affect who is willing to come here to play next year.

Great sports times then at UNLV with Jerry Tarkanian and Ron Meyer who had Mike Thomas running for about 200 yds every game.
