I think the mistake in this reasoning is that you assume that we should start with confidence in a coach, and that he can keep it or lose it. Why?

I start with NO confidence in players, coaches, or the team. They earn it on past good performance and victories. If they lose they keep their default"no confidence" status. It's worse when they come with high expectations and plaudits about "talent" and "genius". Then they have to do even more to earn my confidence. They're geniuses, aren't they not? This should be easy for geniuses.

Shanahan has done little so far to earn my confidence. Some short stretches here and there, but overall I see a team of sloppy losers. When he starts to deliver professional performances and victories, hey presto, here's my confidence.

The problem with these threads is that people have a tendency to confuse supporting the team with taking its crap when it's crap. I'm not going to accept 0-7 , leading the league in penalties, or worse, "moral victories". I root for the team... to win. If they don't, I get upset. Then by the next gametime I root for the team again. To win. Properly, not morally. And not for high draft picks either.

These narratives of "progress", "moral victories", "trusting processes", and "potential" are unacceptable to me as a supporter and a consumer. They are maintained to keep getting my money and my emotional investment in the team and accept an inferior product. Forget about it.

People make fun of Philadelphia fans (of whom I'm one in baseball) because of their bitterness. I say they are the best fans. They suffer (and pay for) because of incredibly sloppy performances and long stretches of no success, and they make their unhappiness clear. Why should they have to be happy about it?

Solid post.

Yup. Great post.
I've seen it suggested that KS has a great, or even brilliant offensive mind.... Participation trophies have screwed up our society so badly.... Brilliance doesn't go 0-8.... Brilliance shouldn't be half of what their father is.... Brilliance should be left in Philly, with a bus ticket to ATL, if the 49ers once again look undisciplined, unprepared, unimaginative, and unworthy of our continued attention.

It's crazy. It's as if you can't rebuild while actually showing promise and winning some games. Who knew that rebuilding meant going 1-15 with an offensive genius as a HC and half a roster hand picked by HC and GM.

"Hand picked" is a straw man argument.

Some of whom were available either did not want to come here, were not seen as valued at the money they wanted or were not viewed as fits for the system or culture. There is a limited number of players on the market and in the draft.

Clear as day by the moves they made they are taking a slow and methodical approach to rebuilding the roster.

Losing 5 games by 3 points or fewer is showing promise. The players showed heart and did not quit on the team. While they still have to learn how to finish, it showed the promise you refuse to acknowledge. A team that came to play and wanted to win those games even though they did not.

Rebuilding from the ground up and wanting to be a draft and develop teams means it is going to take time. And something that takes time like a complete overhaul of an NFL franchises roster requires patience, commitment and trusting in the process.
I am trying real hard to trust the process being an optimist at heart but when I see Eric Reid and Brock Coyle playing linebacker and what could turn into a dire QB situation real fast.......I was here for the Walsh 2-14 season; it was nothing like this. That team featured a lot of players l(before salary cap) learning a new system whereas this teams seems confused about what to do with players. I do not see this or too many more games as being close and one-sided defeats take their toll on players as well as franchises. I especially worry about this defense. How I hope I am wrong.

There's only so much you can do being down 3 offensive tackles. It sucks that this is the sorta s**t we have to look at but it's the reality that we find ourselves.

That is true but being sober and not having any sound was rough lol.

Oh well. D scrapped to give us a chance.. Havent seen OL play that bad in a long time but Eagles D is good, weather conditions sucked...
On to AZ.
Shanahan has now produced the worst record to start a season in 49ers history.
Another disaster from KS....

Interesting take as I too recall the Walsh 2-14 team.
Do you not recall after that season the media calling for him to be fired? How about the start of the 80 season. ? Win 3 then lose 8 in a row.
This is the almost groundhogs day all over. A lot of new and young players trying to figure out a new system. Only difference here is our prior GM really depleted us in terms of talent and depth on this roster. We had mince meat going into this season.

Injuries and lack of depth and talent this is the exact result you'd expect. Lol you really think our mgmt is confused into what to do with the players?

Fk man so many whiners on th zone it's embarrassing yet hey that's our nickname so it is what it is. What did people think we were going to do this year?
Apparently so many people on here have unrealistic expectations it's comical. Full rebuild folks. Wake up to reality. Reality is our past GM hamstrung is badly with this roster. Big time. IMHO I figured 3 drafts under this mgmt and we would see a big move come year 3/4. Patience is a virtue folks. I know that's not a reality for some
