49ers Head Coach Kyle Shanahan Thread

People want to claim the Chiefs had a down year, they did. But this was the best defense by FAR that KC had under Mahomes.

Anyone blaming the loss on Kyle is taking the lazy way out. To me the team was prepared, they came out with a ton of energy and they were making plays. But one thing a coach cannot control is how players perform. You can prepare them, you can scheme them but in the end they have to make the plays.

We lost this game for many reasons and yes Kyle had a hand in that but he's down the list of why we lost. CMC fumble - how is that Kyle's fault? Punt fumble, which to me was the biggest reason we lost the game, how is that Kyle's fault? Even the two injuries in the game proved to be absolutely critical. Greenlaw getting injured not only zapped the energy on defense but allowed Kelce to wake up and in turn Mahomes. Greenlaw stays healthy for the whole game and we're talking about going back to back Champs right now. Even Feliciano's injury had key impact on the game. Burford comes in and makes key mental errors including on a would be TD in OT. We get that one and who knows what happens. At minimum we have a chance to defend a POSSIBLE 2pt conversion and have a chance to win it.

Now Kyle gets blame. KC adjusted and went more with man coverage, something that Deebo isn't so great against and we still went with a heavy Deebo gameplan but the plays were still there to be made if our guys execute.

The critical 3rd and 5 at the 2 minute mark - we pick up the first down and we're able to attempt a game winner with little or no time left. The playcall was there. Unfortunately as good as Brock was against the blitz/pressure all year KC has great players as well and they disguised it well and Brock went to Jennings vs Aiyuk. He throws to Aiyuk and it's very likely 1st down with 1:57 left in the game and KC is forced to use their 2nd timeout. Run on the next play and at worst we're forcing KC to use their last timeout with 1:50ish to go. 2 more runs and the clock is possibly under or around a minute left assuming we don't pick up the first down and get it down into single digits to kick.

Long story short the idea that we lost because of Kyle is dumb. He's got things he has to learn from in this one but winning a SB takes a lot of effort and a good amount of luck. Mike McCarthy won a SB. He's nowhere near the HC that Shanahan is and losing close games to a dynasty team, no matter how their offense looked should not be used a major slight on a HC. They've got HOF bound players and coaches. Their defense was excellent and ours faltered in the waning moments of the game.

You learn, grow and hope to not repeat the same mistakes again. And for anyone who thinks Kyle stopped running the ball...that was not an issue in this game.

you claim the bold, yet this is an actual headline, from cnn: San Francisco 49ers players admit they didn't know new Super Bowl overtime rules following loss to Chiefs.

Biggest red herring out there is the OT rules thing.

Someone explain to me what is gained by the team knowing about the rules prior to the game vs just finding out from the coaches before OT kicks off?

If they knew the rules ahead of the game would they have tried to score a TD instead of a FG only? Would they have tried to prevent KC from scoring a TD more?

I understand that part of it isn't a great look for Kyle but how does it change the game? The players have a job to do. They didn't do it. Burford did his own thing on a playcall that would've gotten us the TD on the opening possession. The defense which got to rest for that offensive drive had a job to do - don't let KC score a TD. Would knowing the OT rules gotten better play out of them?

This is my point...we're doing mental gymnastics to try to act like Shanahan lost this game when players should be held accountable just as much and in some cases more so!

You may not want to hear the headlines, but that's the takeaway / the reality. So if ppl say 'Kyle was prepared', yeah I don't think so. Does not going over it in advance sound prepared to you? Sounds the opposite to me.

KC on the other hand, from internet: The Chiefs said they were "well prepared" to play in overtime, ESPN reports.

Chiefs defensive lineman Chris Jones told reporters that they "talked for two weeks about new overtime rules," according to ESPN. Chiefs safety Justin Reid said their preparation started in training camp.

"We talked about it in training camp about how the rules were different in regular season versus the playoffs. Every week of the playoffs we talked about the overtime rule," Reid told ESPN.

The problem is you can't explain one actual affect this had on the outcome of the game. Whether it was new rules, or the last set of rules, the 49ers were well aware the best possible outcome was to score a TD on the opening drive… which they did not do… and/or get a stop on the Chiefs' possession… which they did not do.

They don't need to 'know the rules' to understand they were trying to score a TD and/or get a stop.

I did explain, from Guy, we had this convo..
Also the convo is preparation, someone just said Kyle was prepared, this is an example where SF wasn't, and KC was. Is it a surprise the better prepared team won? Can't say it is.

Yes the convo was preparation...the game that we knew we were going to get. Not the possible OT. Had we executed properly during regulation there is no need for OT and nobody cares about it.

As I said above and others have said...knowing or going over those rules well in advance changed nothing. KC got to laugh at our decision because their players executed. Their defense held us out of the endzone and their offense scored a TD to win it. Had things been flipped would their preparation and our lack of in terms of OT mattered?

I do laugh at the we didn't know OT rules, like what would've changed really? The goal is always to score TDs anyways, it's not like we thought a FG wins the game. You make sound like a different sport gets played in OT. If Burford blocks someone we score a TD and it's not even an issue. We didn't lose because some players didn't know the new OT rules. We lost because of poor blocking at times, missed XP, Greenlaw injury, stupid penalties by players that usually don't commit them, 6 out of 7 fumbles going their way, a muffed punt that gave them 7 points...All those reasons >>>>> OT rules.

But you do you, make sure you keep posting this another 500 times.

Let's just not bs ourselves with Kyle was prepared nonsense,
If he's prepared and spends 2 mins going over OT with our guys, he probably comes to the logical conclusion you don't want Mahomes to get the ball with a chance to walk you off. Dude was legit in an OT SB before, and not prepared for OT. How does that happen? And we're supposed to not ask question and spam 'I love my coach' style posts? You can, I'll be over here, in reality..

It's always great when you can evaluate things in hindsight.

Here were the facts when Kyle took the ball first in OT, which btw Analytics nerds had about as close as you can get who benefits with a slight % actually in favor of taking the ball first.

In 6 quarters of football Mahomes and the KC offense had scored a TD just once. That was when we had the fumbled punt giving them the ball on our 16 yard line.
The defense had been on the field a good amount of time in the 2nd half of the game and just allowed a pretty quick drive by the Chiefs to tie the game up. Giving them a rest and a chance to plan the best way to hold the hopeful lead made sense.

One thing we knew is KC could get field goals. If you score a TD at best KC would have to match and then MAYBE go for 2 and you have a chance to win the game on that play.

Yes you're giving KC 4 downs and they know what they have to match or beat. There are pros/cons to either scenario but pretending it was a crazy thing that completely cost them the game is garbage.

Burford blocks who he is coached to block and we have a TD lead. Then who knows what happens with KC on their drive.

Umm he did that anyway, it didn't matter if the 9ers took the ball first or last, Mahomes was gonna do that anyway. WTF don't you get.

The logic of it is if Mahomes goes first, and gets the corndog TD, it doesn't 'walk us off'. The game is still going. We get a 4th down play after Chris Jones coming thru unblocked.

Ok fair...so we give Mahomes the ball first with our defense just out there - they give up the TD. Then say we manage to score a TD using 4 downs to work...what happens then? We go for 2? What if Chris Jones gets the stop on that down? We lose and you complain about that? Or we kick the XP and then KC gets the game winning FG and you complain about that?

How about our players do their job so we get the TD and then our defense does their job and not give KC the one TD drive they've had all game long? Oh that's right...they didn't know the rules in OT and must've though a TD there wouldn't be more points than our FG?

That's the problem. It's actually easier to accept that Kyle is trying to lose the Super Bowl. The fact that he's trying to win it and still finds a way to lose 10+ point leads is why he's the ultimate choke artist. He can't call the right plays when the team has to close out.

We have got to stop the stupid 10+ point choke job narratives.

Yes 2019 was a 10 point loss. Ironically nobody bashes Saleh for the defense giving up 21 points in like 7 minutes...but plenty give Shanahan all the blame for the Falcons 28-3 loss, when the damn HC was a defensive guy.

This loss was NOT a 10 point loss. It was 10-0 in the 2nd quarter and the very next drive KC made it 10-3 going into halftime and them getting the ball first to start the 2nd half. This is not an insurmountable lead or anything crazy.

Take away any one of these things and this is probably a win for the 49ers

Greenlaw's injury
CMC fumble
Fumbled punt
Brock not going to Aiyuk on the 3rd and 5 blitz with 2 minutes left

Add in Feliciano getting hurt.

None of those things are coaching issues. Unless you think Shanahan didn't preach the importance of ball control for this game...

Which playcalls do you believe were bad?

My issue with Kyle was his insistence to use Deebo as the focus of the offense once KC switched things up and went to man. But which actual playcall did you see that was bad and lost us the game because on the key downs the playcalls were actually what we needed but player execution caused them to fail.

You nailed it. We can question certain calls and I'm sure Kyle might look at them now and question team but that OT rule issue is nonsense. How would it make any difference. Would the players play harder? I doubt it. They're already playing as hard as they can. It's not like not knowing that you can't move before the snap or can't grab a receiver. I doubt that they were expecting an OT when they prepared for the game. It's not something you expect. If they had how would they have prepared?

Who here says that he's perfect? Some of you only see things in black or white and no in between. 6 out of 7 fumbles going there way and the muffed punt is a much bigger deal and the main reason we lost, not because some players didn't know Pat would have 4 downs to play with.

My biggest issue with Kyle that game was not getting Kittle and CMC involved more in the pass game and trying to force it to Deebo several times when it was obvious he wasn't getting it done.

Bottom line is 6 of 7 fumbles, isn't a coaching decision. A lot of them weren't true fumbles. I think some of those are KCs center snapping low and brushing some grass. Is that a fumble? Did we have a realistic shot at it? You be the judge. You bring up a good point Kyle I think is in love with his positionless football, and loves Deebo, even tho if one watches the JTO, let me tell you it's a tough watch for ol 19. Not a route runner, and we tried over and over and got our tails handed to us on his routes, in the SB.

I had many of the same thoughts, but have you watched the on field footage afterwards? The players did not know the OT rules (fine in most respects) BUT they were in disbelief when they learned then Mahomes would have the ball last. Juice was like wait.. Mahomes gets the ball no matter what, WTF? I'm telling you that didn't sit well with many of them. Don't get me wrong, they need to perform regardless, but the OT thing was def a blunder imo.

Kyles biggest issue with Kyle was the O line he rolled the dice on and his pass protections which bit him in the ass when it mattered the most.

Yah too bad you're just here to bait people and troll. Otherwise you would get it.

Your definition of troll is anyone that doesn't agree with your opinion. It's ironic how many of you use the word loosely for a certain group of ppl that hold a certain opinion. I could certainly argue that your ilk are the real trolls. It's one thing to argue, reject, and even go as far as insult those that criticize Shanahan in a forum. But you guys negate, reject, and insult anyone in the MEDIA that questions Kyle. You boys cover an entire spectrum of homerism. Faith is right. You want this to be a "let's celebrate the accomplishments of Kyle" thread by pretending that his f**k ups don't exist.

No what I'm saying is you game plan to make sure the best player in the game has minimum to no time left to make a last ditch effort to win. How do you do that ? I'm not sure. Maybe you game plan so that KC has to burn all its timeout on that final drive. Maybe you do consider it 4 down territory then hand the ball to CMC on 3rd to see if we can get closer for the 4th down conversion. This is why your "top ranked coaches" is supposed to take the team and close it out. This is where your top ranked coach anticipates that the DC on the other side will likely send some type of pressure so maybe have your QB ready for that situation. I don't know. It seems like this is the 2nd time Kyle has been put in this opportunity to close out the Chiefs on the SB, and both times came up with pedestrian answers that cost us…
