good piece, I like this one:
"In recent conversations with confidants at the 49ers' training facility, he wasn't afraid to admit the truth: The 49ers were fortunate to have made it to Vegas in the first place. They probably should have lost their playoff opener to an underwhelming Green Bay team and needed a huge second-half comeback - fueled by a 51-yard pass that bounced off a defender's facemask - to overcome Detroit in the NFC Championship Game."
shame and if we look at causes, I look at a wasted year at DC. Either let Wilks be Wilks, or hire Sorensen over him. Kyle's yelling at Wilks in the SB, you brought him there, could have moved on in October, course, he didn't. Then we see items like drafting Lance and losing absurd draft capital which could have pushed us over the line in years like 2021 or 2023. Not having the team prepped on basic rules. A ton of red flags. Probably the biggest is an O that struggled to move the ball all postseason, loaded with playmakers.
We all know you'll find a narrative to push if it's there despite the facts.
Deebo out early vs the Packers in the rain - 24 points scored
Lions 34 points scored.
22 points scored vs a defense averaging giving up 17.
One thing you guys seem to miss while pulling out all the stops to blame everything on Shanahan is player execution hurt us on offense, and the weakest unit on the roster happened to be the OL which goes a long way to ensuring the success of both the passing and running games.
Defense was healthy for the most part and simply kept under performing schematically and the talented players we had sprinkled all over the place looked to be struggling more times than not. Outside the corners who are a specialty of Wilks, can you say any of our other stud defensive players played their best ball last year?
You can blame Shanahan on the Wilks hire but they took a shot and it failed. That's Kyle owning a mistake, you guys want to somehow absolve Wilks from the blame but still put it on Kyle for making the move. Weird.
You can blame Kyle for not addressing the OL enough but also hard to do when the guy we had starting in the SB gets hurt and his replacement makes key mistakes he wasn't coached to do. Only so many resources to go around...hopefully this draft we'll address the position properly.
But once again - the Chiefs defense was very good. How do we blame all that on Kyle when the Chiefs have made many offense look mediocre this season coupled with the fact that you have normally reliable players making critical errors in the game? Or forgetting the fact that Spagnulo has a history of shutting down offenses with elite playmakers, elite coaches and QBs.
