49ers Head Coach Kyle Shanahan Thread

Kc highlights from the SB. I almost lost my appetite. I am ready for football. This has been a long offseason. All we have these days is contract disputes and rehashing the past.

speaking on this subject, don't look down:

Is there anything gaudier than championship rings? They've become like player salaries. Each one has to be bigger than the previous one.

rather than the flip top they should have put a blinged corndog between the SB trophies

Offense does play a role in giving up points (e.g., extending drives, wearing down opposing D), but 3/4 of the burden to close out the game is on the defense, IMO. The Atlanta SB loss was squarely on the Falcon's D, DC, and HC, not on the OC.

Nice to offer opinions but the facts remain in place. Kyle was responsible for the offense that ultimately helped secure the loss. People can make all the excuses and offer opinions but the facts are not changing… he is 0-3.

The offense got the lead in the SB twice in the 4th quarter, the 2nd time coming under 2 minutes left in the game. They got the lead again in OT.

Wonder what happens if the defense does their job?

this is where you reveal your bias, as if getting near picked, having a flag extend a dead drive, then bogging down and having a cluster of a play with C Jones unblocked, and settling for a fg? Is that doing your job? Did Burford do his job?

it ain't 49er O vs 49er D, and even if it was, majority of folks from taking in that game and seeing reactions say the D did better than the O in that game. it took near 6 qtrs for Mahomes to throw more than 1 TD pass.

He needs to revamp his drop back passing scheme. All the talk of him taking Jimmy to a SB, but the truth is he was never able to make Jimmy look good in the playoffs. Our roster was just good enough to win in spite of him. I really think he needs to get better in the drop back passing game if we're going to win a ring. His passing offense gets called out by guys like Kurt Warner

Hence Kyle picked up Pearsol and Cowing and drafted Puni and Kinston. Kyle's not so stupid that he can't see his faults. He's a bit stubborn but his super bowl losses has always made him change his fundamental philosophies for the better.

1987 the 49ers were one and done and looked like they were a fading team, but then whalla, the next two years - they get it done and were on the verge of a three-pete. You just don't know. Specially with a franchise level QB like Brock, I don't think there's any real good reason to be pessimistic about the 49ers future or Kyle's coaching. But there's nothing wrong with being pessimistic. Whatever floats a 49er fans boat, so long as they are 49er fans.

Yeah the good ol fizzle in the drizzle against the Vikings when the niners had the number 1 defense and number 1 offense.

Kyle needs to make adjustments to finally win one and then we can have Kyle as a great niners coach. He is better than most coaches and if he learns that coaches like spags catch on to what the offense is doing. He needs to counter with adjusting the offense to the new holes in zone D.

When are these 'anti-kyle' guys going to start focusing on the defense? It was the defense that couldn't hold the lead the offense gave them, but these guys skip right over that fact so that they could continue to blame KS for not winning the SB. It's laughable, with their "It's a fact dude" comments. "He's 0 for 3 bro!" LOL.

What does this mean?

If you question kyle, you are anti kyle?

Its simple…

Well are you anti-kyle? Hater?

I call it like it is. Not pro or anti Kyle. Is he 0-3? Yes. Did his teams blow sizable leads in all 3? Yes. Was his play calling questionable/ maddening in all 3? Yes. Did he put his teams in the best position to win in the second half of all 3? No. Can he turn it around and win #6? Doubtful.. based on past performances. There is always hope though. Is he the only option we have at HC? For now, yes. Do fans have the right to criticize the coach? Absolutely.

Kyle is not 0-3. He's the only coordinator who gets blame for a SB loss as well as a HC. Falcons got 28 points vs the #1 defense in the league and the OC whose scheme got them to the big dance in the first place.

Also what sizeable lead did he blow in this last SB? I'll wait...

"I call it like it is"

You have to be kidding. As the head coach he is responsible for both sides. We have expended more resources on the the defensive side— the d line to be exact than any other group. They played great in the sb then ran out of gas at the end or kc coached around the. Result is the same. 0-3. If it makes you feel better we can say Kyle is 0-2.5.

No he's not.

I can guarantee you that Andy Reid doesn't have to babysit his DC. Fact is Kyle Shanahan has never had a guy who he can be completely hands off with when it comes to defense...if anything that could be part of the problem.

The unfortunate part of it is Saleh was like our 3rd choice a first time DC in the NFL IIRC. He started off rough and finally when we added Bosa/Ford and some other guys the light went on and he turned into a really good one. Demeco, first time HC looked great but the only vet DC Kyle had was Wilks and clearly learned a valuable lesson there - just because someone knows how to run a defense doesn't mean they know how to run the defense you want to run. They were two grown men who made a decision to join forces but scheme wise it was not a fit.

But Andy Reid got to worry about the offense in the SB and finding the best matchups vs a defense that lost one of it's top players and a DC who saved his worst for last. Scheme wise Wilks basically bent over, spread his cheeks and received Pat's glory(pardon the image)

So yes Kyle gets blame for hiring Wilks, he gets blame for keeping Wilks around. He gets blame for not trying to hire a DC who he doesn't have to baby sit or have different ideas about how to end the game BUT to be fair you can only do so much. Other people have relationships that trumps his. That's why Matt Stafford went to the Rams and not the 49ers. That's why Mike Vrabel didn't take the job with us. It's also an unfortunate case of the 49ers looking for new coaches late in the process because when Saleh/Ryans have been hired away other teams have finished loading up their staff.

I like how you avoid calling the DC out for giving up the lead, but blame the OC in ATL and SF losses. I wonder why that is? I bet if Kyle was the DC then you would be hounding him for not holding onto the lead the OC gave him.

The DC held Mahomes to 2 FG's for a majority of the game. The DC gift wrapped the offense the ball in enemy territory to start the half. Now he didn't perform when he hould have and I'm glad that he's gone but the DC failed, the offense failed, special teams failed. That is a direct reflection of the HC. Right?!

49ers offense was playing the #2 defense in the NFL and that defense was arguably playing it's best football in the playoffs.
49ers defense was playing the #15 offense in the NFL.

Both the offense and the defense lost key players during the game but when it came down to it the coaching was better on offense by a long shot. When called upon despite all the BS Kyle drew up a play that should've had BA catch an easy 1st down to milk the clock after the 2 minute warning and kick the game winning FG. When it came down to it Kyle drew up a play that had 2 guys wide open for should be TDs.

Kyle doesn't control Burford going against what he's coached to do and going with his gut and not blocking Chris Jones who forced Purdy to throw the ball away. Kyle doesn't control Brock not being able to identify the blitzing defender in time to hit Aiyuk.

Wilks dropping the back end of the defense giving Mahomes an easy pickup on 2nd and long to give them a much easier 3rd and mid situation vs attacking and pushing them back doesn't help a defense made to attack.

Wilks dropping both safeties 15 yards away the LOS on a 4th and 1 play certainly didn't help the odds of stopping that play.

There are coaching decisions that make players jobs harder and there are coaching decisions which make players jobs easier. Kyle made things easier. Wilks made it harder.

But sure blame it all on the HC. I understand the logic but it's incredibly stupid. You can look at every coach in the league and pick holes in them when they lose. Any mistakes are ignored if they win.

Jennings was going to be SB MVP mainly because he scored two TDs, one of which was a pass. He had 4 receptions for 40 yards and another TD. He didn't exactly set the world on fire in the receiving game, size and everything.
