49ers Head Coach Kyle Shanahan Thread

I like Acho, but that doesn't mean I always agree with him. I disagree here.

Yes, Kyle's most recent DC picks haven't worked out, but the first two he knocked out of the park. If you're gonna call out the negative, you also must acknowledge the positive, and vice versa. Otherwise, you have zero credibility and are easily label a biased fool.

Deebo losing his cool is not a Kyle issue. If that were true, then Mike MacDonald is responsible for his guys fighting on the sideline too.

I like Kyle because he's creative, a players coach that guys respect, he's a coach guys literally say they want to come play for, he demands the best from guys, and often gets more even with less, putting guys in position to succeed more often that not. He has established a hard working culture of high character players in the locker room as well, and that starts from the top.

On the negative side, there are some flaws, some showing up more this year. The protection scheme is getting exposed and we'll have to see if he adjusts going into next year. I don't think he's the best at challenges, and I think he carries scars from being burned on creative run calls when we needed a play in the past, and maybe felt he got too cute on those plays, so now he seems to never try it and we get stuffed too much when we need a yard or two. I also think he might get overly flustered when things are going well, and I think he puts too much on offensive rookies' plate, making it hard for them to get playing time.

Still.. To me, it's like with Jim Harbaugh, the positives with Kyle outweigh the negative by a lot IMO.
I still say Kyle would be a better head coach if he had someone else as Offensive Co-Ordinator calling the plays.

You're not the only one to suggest this, and to me it just doesn't make sense. It's one of his greatest strengths. What is the goal? To have him be more cognizant of the clock? More hands on with the defense?

On this point, maybe he's not the best, but he's actually got a really good track record compared to most of the great 21st century coaches. In his career as HC he is 22-19 over 41 challenges. Reid is 73-72 (145 total); Belichick is 53-78 (131 total); John Harbaugh is 55-76 (131 total); Tony Dungy was 28-41 (69 total; nice); Jim Harbaugh is 12-26 (38 total); Sean McVay is 16-20 (36 total); Arians was 29-30 (59 total). Reid/Belichick/Dungy had to make more challenges for more scenarios earlier in their career, of course, so the newer guys benefit from the league doing it themselves more these days. Even with that Kyle is, by win %, the best of these coaches at challenges at this point in his career.

I'm talking about a genuine offensively minded Co-ordinator who had done the job before and who could question Kyle or bounce their ideas off each other.

Someone who could say to Kyle - "Hey Kyle, I see what you are trying to do there but maybe we should take our egos out of this and run a different play"

We have seen Good Kyle; and also Bad Kyle.

Bad Kyle shows up all the time in stressful situations.

When Kyle becomes Bad Kyle, he needs someone to take that decision making away from him.

There are plenty of young offensive minded talented coaches out there who would love to work with Kyle.

It has to be someone Kyle respects and would listen to.

Mike McDaniel is the last person to hold the title of offensive coordinator in San Francisco, having done so in 2021.

So someone like that.

Was McDaniel calling plays?

No, Mike McDaniel did not call plays in San Fransisco.

But I am suggesting that someone like that who Kyle respects should call the plays with Kyles input.

Oh, I know. Like I mentioned, the suggestion doesn't make sense to me.

I'd like to lean into our assets' strengths and try to compensate elsewhere for their weaknesses. If we have a top play-caller, I want him calling plays.

We won't find a coach that always calls the perfect play, or won't be second guessed by fans when something doesn't work.
here is where we will see what Kyle is made of. Belichick, for all his faults, was able to maintain a high level of success with vastly different offensive schemes (yes brady was the consistent, but the cast of character around him was far from consistent. Same on the defensive side, he was very successful plugging and playing "washed up" players and getting a few seasons out of them, think Gilmore.
My good Kyle, bad Kyle analysis is very worthy.

I talked about how Kyle would still be involved in the play design to scheme up the offense.

Kyle is so cocky; he outsmarts himself time and again.

We need someone there to take the process out of Kyle's hands when he tries to implode.

A second set of eyes.

You love these hot take idiots 😂

funny, he speaks the truth and you call it a hot take and the guy an idiot. Look in the mirror there you will find a Kyle fan boy who can't process the truth. That take was spot on. It happens to be the same take more and more fans have. I guess we are all idiots and you and the rest of the Kyle clan are the "smart" ones. I guess you see mismanagement as a coaching attribute. Stagnation, regression, and failure must also be good qualities for you. I just don't understand how you can come on here and defend what Kyle has done to this team. How do you justify your takes? you must love losing because that's what you are defending. Let me save you the trouble. Anyone but Kyle is the answer. Please remind us of all the success Kyle has brought us. Post season appearances. Super. That's great but also negated by his post season choke fest. Where are we now? Where will we be at the end of the season? That's what counts. What direction is this team heading? By your logic , the right direction. By rational people logic.. the wrong direction. Your takes are predictable and lazy just like your coaches broken offense.

Yeah it's the truth. You are right.
