Our Head Team Physician is from Stanford Hospital as is most of the medical team. If they checked him out, I feel good about it.

Same people that just figured out AA had a major issue....

AA has had that since High school, it just started popping out all the time now. You don't get surgery on shoulders until you need to, it is an invasive process and recovery is 4 to 6 months.

It should've been flagged at the draft. A DT with a shoulder issue is a problem.

It's scary to think we're, once again, relying on our own medical staff here...really scary (just glad we got him in the first round to get that 5th year option, just in case):

"The 49ers should count their lucky stars that they didn't pick Reuben Foster at the third pick overall and they ended up getting him at 31 because Reuben Foster may require surgery before the season even begins," Lombardi said on The Ringer podcast Monday. "Now, people are saying he's fine, everything's going to be good. That's not what I'm told by a lot of teams in the league. That's why he slipped. People think it's more the character. I'm tending to believe it was more the injuries and that shoulder, whether it's the torn labrum or the rotator cuff.

"The 49ers are really fortunate. If they would have turned that card in at three, they would have probably been holding their breath to think he's going to stay healthy for the season."

Following the 2016 collegiate football season, Foster underwent surgery to repair a torn rotator cuff in his right shoulder. It was an injury that prevented the linebacker from participating in the NFL Scouting Combine.

The 49ers and their medical staff, who examined Foster's shoulder, are confident that he is fine. How confident are they? According to Peter King of The MMQB, upon drafting the linebacker and hearing the concerns about his shoulder on the television coverage, Lynch yelled across the draft war room to his chief medical officer, Jeff Ferguson: "You guys worried about his shoulder?"

"What shoulder?!" Ferguson yelled back.

Foster has also been adamant that a second surgery is not necessary and insists that he will be ready to go for the team's training camp in late July. "I'm making big progress," Foster told the media during his introductory press conference. "I'll be limited in OTAs. Training camp, I'll be full-go, but if it's my decision, I think I can go now."

Foster was also asked about the reports of an addition surgery possibly being necessary. "That's not accurate at all," Foster said. "I'm fine. I'm on schedule."

On Friday, the day after being selected, Foster joined KNBR and tried to explain where the mixup occurred. "Because I had a scan," Foster said. "I scanned it and what they was talking about was the anchor in my shoulder and the light had glimpsed it -- some light had glimpsed it a certain way and make it look like it's not healed all the way. It's getting in the healing process because I'm like 13 weeks outside the surgery. But no more surgeries. It's going to be completely healed before training camp."

"I'd be surprised if he can't help us this year," head coach Kyle Shanahan said on KNBR during a separate interview that occurred following the selection of Foster. "When you know a guy's not going to be hurt long-term, you know you're going to get him quickly, you don't want that stuff to affect your decision. As a coach, I want him to be ready the first day he gets here but I'm pretty confident he'll be ready and play for us this season. If something did happen to happen, like you mentioned – our doctors felt that it wouldn't – but if it did, that stuff still gets taken care of. It's not like it's going to be career threatening and it's going to change who we have. I feel very confident about that stuff."

Just want this all in one place so we know who to LynchMob if Foster doesn't pan out (thanks JC).

Every year there are some players with injury questions, and some players ruled undraftable due to injury concerns. There were many this year, and most teams pushed two Alabama players (defensive lineman Jonathan Allen, linebacker Reuben Foster) down the draft board because of shoulder issues. I'll preface this by saying in 1980 the Cincinnati Bengals drafted USC tackle Anthony Muñoz third overall despite the fact that an injured knee caused 14 NFL teams to flunk him on his physical. Muñoz became one of the great offensive linemen of all time. Before the draft, one smart scout told me his team wouldn't draft Foster; the team feared his postseason rotator-cuff surgery would have to be re-done. The Niners, before Foster's medical re-check with the team, labeled him a 2-minus on their medical scale, meaning they had concerns requiring another examination. After that examination, team physical Dr. Timothy McAdams and the Niners were satisfied with Foster's healing, GM John Lynch said, and the medical grade was changed to a 2-plus. "He'll be fine for training camp," Lynch said. "We feel as strong as ever about his health, and really, we've never wavered. Our medical people are confident in him." Foster's shoulder will be monitored as closely as any injury entering training camp, because of everything said about it before the draft and since.

"He's ahead of schedule. So our biggest deal with Reuben's going to be holding him back," Lynch said Tuesday on Sirius XM NFL Radio.

"He was trying to pull the 'okie doke' and run out there with the guys, and we're just going to have to keep the reins on him," said Lynch. "But come training camp, we anticipate him being full go. And I can't wait to see it."

Lynch read the reports about Foster's shoulder and made sure to double- and triple-check with the 49ers' medical staff ensure it wouldn't be a long-term issue.

"I applaud (our doctors) for it, they never blinked, they never deviated from their initial stance," said Lynch. "They went and re-checked it over and over.

"Believe me, in my first draft, I wasn't going to just kind of listen to them one time. I kept going back and saying, 'Why are there all these reports out there? Look at them again. Look at the pictures again.' And they came back with the same report over and over. I can't tell you what (other teams) saw. What we saw is a guy that had rotator cuff surgery, it's healing very well."

Good read, thanks
Why doesn't he get a rescan to confirm if lighting getting in was the problem so there Niners can confirm this?

The #49ers have hired former Houston and Washington strength and conditioning coach Ray Wright, a league source confirms.
The San Francisco 49ers cleared out their entire strength and conditioning staff after firing Chip Kelly, and Kyle Shanahan is beginning the process of replenishing the group. Matt Maiocco is reporting Shanahan has hired former Washington strength and conditioning coach Ray Wright.

Wright spent fives seasons in Washington, from 2010 to 2014. Prior to that he spent eight years with the Houston Texans, including seven as assist strength coach, and one as head strength coach. Washington fired Wright at the end of the 2014 season. He spent the past year and a half working in Houston for O Athletik, according to what appears to be his LinkedIn page.

Wright worked with Kyle Shanahan in both Washington and Houston. This continues the pattern of coaches who have experience with him. I imagine we will see some assistants hired more from word of mouth, but for the most part, Shanahan is focused on people he knows and trusts.

PCP you say hmmmmmmmm
I don't know if anyone picked this up, but there was a comment from Lynch on the MMQB video about wanting to incorporate far more flexibility and speed into the team's strength and conditioning program. I was really heartened to hear that, and it's another great sign that Lynch and Shanny know what they are doing as the flexibility element is key for injury prevention, obviously they've seen how many players we've had injured in the last few years and aim to address it.
